jackyinger··on Raspberry Pi blocks changing RAM chips
Etch it in the top layer of copper, cover it with soldermask. A bit harder to see, but harder to tamper.
jackyinger··on The LLMentalist Effect (2023)
Actually, there are material differences in the practical outcomes of using AI or not. Proofs don’t confer understanding. AI prose and “art” is materially different than human made.

There is a difference between you not liking something and it being wrong. Maybe think about that with your grey matter.

jackyinger··on How to Write with an LLM
Agreed. If I’m spending my precious time reading something thing, I want the author to have invested their personal effort to write it.
jackyinger··on Dimethyl Mercury Exposure Incident at MIT
Actually organophosphates are not that lethal. See the LD50 of this example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malathion

You may also be thinking of phosgene, which actually contains no phosphorous at all. But it is extremely toxic see the LC50: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phosgene

jackyinger··on Aspirational Clownmaxxing and Joey's cadillac todo list
Heck with perpetual September, we’re entering perpetual mid-2020’s
jackyinger··on Aspirational Clownmaxxing and Joey's cadillac todo list
What even is the point of posting something like this? No serious person is going to be impressed. Assuming a human was involved they must be deep in AI induced psychosis.

Man, HN used to have some really good stuff. Now it’s mostly AI slop.

jackyinger··on Visual Analysis of Binary Files
The wrench thing is real. My approach to a DIY mechanic’s stethoscope is to stick the handle of a screwdriver against my ear and the tip on whatever I want to listen to. Great for figuring out what part of the machine a noise is coming from.
jackyinger··on A humble cabbage became one of the Forbidden City’s treasures (2025)
I have seen this in person, it really is remarkable how the artist used the natural color gradient in the stone. The entire museum is well worth a visit.
jackyinger··on AI Is Threatening Natural Resources for Billions
How about instead of sewing FUD and justifying one evil by pointing at others, we actually gave a damn about the world we’re creating.

People act like doing things that are good for the environment is inherently lacking in economic value. My Dad’s environmental consulting business put me through college, while doing good things for the environment and people, and that is really small scale stuff. And his primary customer was a bank wishing to avoid lending on contaminated sites.

There could absolutely be massive money to be made in doing good things for the environment, it is the people making money doing bad things for the environment who do their damndest to keep grasp on the wheel and subvert any attempt to make doing good things for the environment economically advantageous.

These people are virtually selling their children’s future for a few extra bucks today. The earth is going to be around for a long time yet. We should care about our children, grandchildren and so on.

jackyinger··on FDA Admitted in Print That Nothing It Knows of Will Wash Cyclospora Off Lettuce
Congrats! Being overwhelmed with tomatoes and cucumbers sounds like a great opportunity to can tomatoes and pickle cucumbers.
jackyinger··on AI is removing the middle class of software engineering?
The scale of a cloud datacenter is pretty awesome to witness. I had the opportunity to visit a large cloud company’s data center years ago, it was immense in scale and (mostly) very well thought out.
jackyinger··on Possible invasive species superspreader event near Strait of Hormuz
Ok, my bad. There’s nothing there that negative towards the article.

It just strikes me that this line of questioning blasting is often used to create uncertainty. My hostility to that came out here, when it was unfounded.

jackyinger··on Possible invasive species superspreader event near Strait of Hormuz
It’s pretty simple, stuff grows on boats, then boats move, then stuff falls off. Source: I’ve owned boats that lived in salt water.

Maybe try just appreciating those basic facts rather than trying to overwhelm them with very hard to answer questions.

Does the basic idea in this article attack your world view?

jackyinger··on FCC approves test of space mirror to light night sky
How is this under the FCC’s authority?
jackyinger··on Strange Balls found on Queensland beaches could be toxic 'space debris': experts
Even if they aren’t, it’s best to assume they are and stay the fuck away. Hydrazine is nasty
jackyinger··on LibreCAD in the Browser
Ok, solve space is cool. But let me know when it’s ready to tackle more than a “hello world” level design problem.
jackyinger··on AI in mathematics is forcing big questions
To bluntly put it in a nutshell, and state the obvious:

If you don’t understand the problem you can’t be sure that the computer does.

jackyinger··on The disappearance of Japan's animators
God forbid we invest in the future. Investors need those profits now!
jackyinger··on Extreme Heat conference cancelled due to extreme heat warning
That heat goes out into the world, it doesn’t just disappear
jackyinger··on Extreme Heat conference cancelled due to extreme heat warning
Sure the sun is a proximal cause…

But are you really going to tell me that you me that tho evidence that temperatures are getting warmer is bunk? For starters check out the top diagram here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_change#

Would you argue against the physics of greenhouse gases? https://www.quantamagazine.org/physicists-pinpoint-the-quant...

Are you too young to have noticed climate changes over time in your life?

Edit: And the accumulation of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_dioxide_in_the_atmosphe...

jackyinger··on Why thinking out loud with someone beats thinking alone
I draw a lot to figure out engineering details. I used to make beautiful drawings in diagramming software (draw.io and the lil). But man, it took a lot of time. Now I scribble on printer paper unless it’s something I plan to share.
jackyinger··on U.S. pulling ocean sensors a 'shock' for Canadian research as El Niño nears
A small price to pay to increase the standing of a select few. /s
jackyinger··on SpaceX to buy Cursor for $60B
To be clear I don’t see gambling to increase one’s wealth as a vision. That’s playing a game.

Vision is seeing a change that could be made. “I could be richer” is about as banal as a vision could get.

jackyinger··on SpaceX to buy Cursor for $60B
This is an insane take. Of course there are other areas that are growing or could grow if there was investment.

The problem is an absolute lack of vision on the part of those holding the capital.

Meeting the challenges of climate change could hold huge opportunities. Look at China’s massive expansion in renewables, look at the expansion of renewables in the US despite political headwinds.

Have some imagination, break out of your echo chamber. AI ain’t the only game to be played.

jackyinger··on A 'cold blob' in the Atlantic could be a sign of AMOC shutdown
The skepticism is from people who are making money emitting CO2 and don’t want to stop making money in the same old way. It is well documented that oil companies have been sewing skepticism for decades, go figure.
jackyinger··on Meta steals a tactic from Tesla and builds data centers in tents
A desperate bid to get around data center bans: disguise them as homeless encampments
jackyinger··on Can the stockmarket swallow Anthropic, SpaceX and OpenAI?
Perhaps they’re afraid announcement would trigger divestment
jackyinger··on Why 'Smart' Products Have Started to Look Like the Dumb Choice
Sewing machines are a great example. Perfected mechanically, now available with screens. The mechanical part can easily outlive the electronics.

Electronics are consumables / disposables unfortunately. Tho we could make them much more reliable if we cared to.

jackyinger··on Waymo says can't avoid bike lanes because riders want to be dropped off in them
I thought the point of driverless cars is that they are supposed to be better than humans.

This should be excepted fork that goal. If this is accepted, what would be the next thing to be deemed unrealistic?
