jackreichert··on Passwordless login done right
The very fact that they claim that makes me uncomfortable with their knowledge of security.
jackreichert··on Companies in the U.S. are valued 10% above the cost of replacing their assets
I always understood that potential revenue, to a certain extent, is baked into the value of the company. When things change in the market it doesn't necessarily effect the values of the companies, it's when something unexpected happens, because the market represents a perceived future value of the company.
jackreichert··on I'm a Cook and I Want You to Keep Your Tips
Amen. In Italy and France (probably elsewhere as well), you maybe tip a percent or two if you really think it's deserved; albeit, tourists are ruining that to some extent. But fair salaries are baked (or cooked) into the prices on the menu and it's considered a respectable long-term career to be in the food industry.

I'm not for worshiping everything Europe does, but this is the way it should work.

jackreichert··on Twitter, but without code
It reminds me of all those people saying wysiwyg editors would kill the need to know HTML. Really, they made it possible for developers to work on more complicated and exciting projects. Uncle Phil wants help with his flower store website? He'll be happy with WordPress.com or SquareSpace.com and you can continue working on your stuff without being a bad nephew.
jackreichert··on I have something to hide
There is a huge difference between anonymous visitor statistics to measure various metrics of performance, and tracking unique digital footprints.
jackreichert··on Accepting payments is getting harder
Unless you're in the business of money, you shouldn't really be doing it yourself, so the important TLDR is:

> Obviously it’s not fun living in that fear, which is why I believe that services like Stripe, that help you out with these issues, will thrive.

jackreichert··on Why you should have a programming blog
> Before even to write, one should learn to think.

I personally gain clarity from writing.

jackreichert··on Robinhood raises $50M
It used to be available on their site, but they do have a number: http://online-brokers.credio.com/l/128/Robinhood

Not cool that they took it off.

jackreichert··on We Can’t Let John Deere Destroy the Idea of Ownership
It's really just a matter of time until such manufacturing has a viable open source mainstream alternative. Then we can look forward to small dev shops building affordable custom robots for everyday use.
jackreichert··on Nasa.gov Redesign
Personally, I don't find it very attractive. It IS beautifully functional, though. So I guess that, to a large extent, is an embodiment of NASA; which will work out well for them.
jackreichert··on Is This Justice? Charging an Eighth Grader with a Felony for “Hacking”
Again, semantics, but I'd say it's more akin to a kid breaking into school, not the teacher's home.

Or, more likely, the teacher's briefcase.

Yes, using a computer feels a lot like going to an actual physical place. But we forget, it's a portable piece of property. It contains sensitive documents, but it's not breaking and entering.

jackreichert··on Einstein's Letter to Marie Curie (1911)
You forgot the best part! "...by means of a comical witticism"
jackreichert··on A Million Lines of Bad Code
Very valid point. But not every product, as much as the stakeholder would like to believe, is a space shuttle.
jackreichert··on A Million Lines of Bad Code
More important than good code is shipped code.

I'd say about half my bad code is due to inexperience, what the post is referring to. As time goes on it DOES get better, especially since -- like most of you -- I'm constantly reading and trying to improve my skills.

The other half of my bad code is due to time constraint. This is either because a quick hack is needed, or the proper planning time is not allocated to do a proper job.

This leads me back to my initial statement. Sometimes you just need to get the job done. If you're not good enough to do it right, but you hack it and it works, that's good enough for now.

This is how systems get built poorly and bloat up, but there are deadlines and requirements that need to be met, and if you never ship, you'll never get the budget to rebuild that old system you allowed to get unwieldy. It's a constant struggle to balance quality, functionality, and deadlines.

jackreichert··on Intent to deprecate: Insecure HTTP
In order for this to really take off a campaign with the popular basic plug and play hosting providers to install free/cheap SSL would be needed.
jackreichert··on Ask HN: What are you doing to improve your health?
The bare minimum for me is: - 5 sun salutations (does wonders for your back) - 1 mile run - 5 minute meditation

This is the very basics of my MUST do. I strive for more, but I tend to get sick if I don't do at least this.

jackreichert··on List of April Fools' Day Announcements

jackreichert··on Leonard Nimoy's final tweet
Complete and utter mistake.

That tweet, those words, sigh, words to etch into you consciousness and meditate on daily.

jackreichert··on Leonard Nimoy, Spock of ‘Star Trek,’ Dies at 83
I am so sorry for your loss.
jackreichert··on Google Is Shutting Down Google Helpouts, Its Expert Video Chat Service
This happens a lot, before using any service by Google I tend to ask myself, twice, "if they shut this down, which they might very well do, what is my backup plan?" Honestly, it's hard to make a good case to rely on them for much outside of their core products.
jackreichert··on New Tesla battery could power your home, and maybe the electric grid too
This is also the missing piece to move over to a more renewable energy source. Coal is on demand. If there is a need for more, you can spin up more factories, and many site waiting just for this.

Most renewable energies are reliable, but over longer periods of time. With a way to store energy, and have it dormant in the grid waiting to be used, this creates the surplus needed so we can switch to solar and wind and be able to rely on output.

jackreichert··on Programmer proverbs
"Always code as if the guy who ends up maintaining your code will be a violent psychopath who knows where you live."

jackreichert··on Email Encryption Software Relies on One Guy, Who Is Going Broke
It would be really great if you could run an apt-get/yum filter on your server and retrieve a list of donate links for the open source services you rely on.

Ideally, a GPL+donate-what-you-can would really help maintain these projects.

jackreichert··on ...But It’s My Choice If I Want To Be Seen Naked
Thank you! I was struggling to understand what I found so upsetting about Prism. This was the outcome.
jackreichert··on ...But It’s My Choice If I Want To Be Seen Naked
This looks like a shameless post from my site. By me. It is. But I don't usually do that with my thoughts. I just wanted feedback on this one.
jackreichert··on Switching from Gmail to FastMail
The fact that they even offer 200mb and 800mb plans makes it hard for me to take them seriously. Shame.
jackreichert··on [dead]
As long as the Internet connection goes through ISPs it's not decentralized. Haven't we already established that it's through these centralized pipes that the NSA is gaining access to everything?

How would OP's solution solve the problem, or am I missing something?

jackreichert··on OStatus: like Twitter, but open
true. it's a shame.
jackreichert··on OStatus: like Twitter, but open
WordPress already has the complete infrastructure and adoption needed for a social network. The only missing key is interconnecting them, why the need for a separate platform? app? It's all in place. Only a plugin is needed.

Anyone with the plugin would be able to connect their network into anyone else with the plugin. I would imagine it could be done with openid and xmlrpc.

jackreichert··on With the luckiest job in the world...
New video. Can't say I'm not jealous, but it's certainly good motivation to succeed... To do things like this.
