jackdoe··on Ask HN: What was your "oh shit" moment with GenAI?
I wish it had more sense of humor and would print 'I am trapped inside your printer' or something :)
jackdoe··on Ask HN: What was your "oh shit" moment with GenAI?
I did not know where it printed it from, but after that I printed from chrome without issue.
jackdoe··on Ask HN: What was your "oh shit" moment with GenAI?
I will never know.
jackdoe··on Ask HN: What was your "oh shit" moment with GenAI?
I have had many, but the last one was quite funny:

It fixed my printer after dist-upgrade and separate chrome upgrade, the printer worked everywhere but not in chrome.

After 30 years of using linux I didn't even want to know what is wrong, is it colord again? dbus + cups issue? I completely accepted that I wont be able to print from chrome for a couple of months until next update.

I just ran it in dangerously-skip-permissions mode and said 'my printer doesnt work in chrome' few minutes later I heard the printer printing "This is test" and it said 'I think its fixed, do you see a page coming out of the printer now?'

jackdoe··on I'm Tired of Talking to AI
Things are so much worse than you think.

Many real people talk like AI now.

I notice it more and more every day.

Sometimes I can notice it in my speech pattern as well. And worse of all, my thinking. It is like I am reading the same book over and over again.

Now I actually have old sci-fi (mona lisa) between me and the keyboard, while claude is writing, I am reading. And I avoid reading its output as much as I can.

Get the last ounce of milk from the dying cow.

The well is beyond poisoned. Almost anything I search for is returning AI generated vomit. I have not used google in weeks.

On youtube I use Unhook and only look at /feed/subscriptions, when I search I use before:2022. And am actually downloading what I find interesting, before google starts deleting because of the flood of vomit. Hard disks can not be manufactured fast enough to consume it.

Even HN is slowly becoming unreadable.

The internet is on borrowed time.

Its time to move on.

Try new things, make your own networks. Write your ipv6 address in the pub, under the table, in the top left corner, write it on the subway walls, and tenement halls.

Listen on tcp port 1492 and explain how to talk to you.

jackdoe··on We've made the world too complicated
relax man, just go and touch some grass, there is no 'we', do what you wanna do, go where you wanna go.

also, block the internet for a while, buy a commodore and code some machine code, make a forth, you will be alright.

read `the soul of a new machine`.

the world is in the middle of a storm right now, you cant do much, but weather through it.

jackdoe··on Claude for Small Business
Policy makers use AI to write policies, business owners use AI to comply with said policies.

Large companies can navigate the waters with teams of lawyers and accountants.

I don't think it will be possible to run a small business without AI in the near future, as the complexity of the law will increase beyond any comprehension.

Looking at the transformer as a homoiconic machine makes reading and writing tokens much easier.

> The problem with this is now you are solely responsible for managing all of the changes

We seem to greatly overestimate the amount of code needed to do something.

For example, there are billions of lines of code from me pressing a key, to you seeing what I wrote. But if we were to make a special program that communicates via ipv6 and icmp, and it is written for hazard3 pico2350 with wiz5500 ethernet breakout, the whole thing including the c compiler to compile your code (which could very well outperform gcc -O3) will be 5-6k lines of code, including RA, and even barebones spi drivers, and a small preemptive os.

So, it is not unreasonable to manage all of those changes.

I cant wait to have no dependencies.

An extreme example is now when I make interactive educational apps for my daughter, I just make Opus use plain js and html; from double pendulums to fluid simulations, works one shot. Before I had hundreds of dependencies.

Luckily with MIT licensed code I can just tell Opus to extract exactly the pieces I need and embed them, and tweaked for my usecase. So far works great for hobby projects, but hopefully in the future productions software will have no dependencies.

jackdoe··on Tim Davis – Probabilistic engineering and the 24-7 employee
same, I also try not to read claude's output that much, and I have a copy of Gibson's Mona Lisa and just open it while it is thinknig, for music and even for CS stuff, I search with before:2022 on youtube

but the ship has sailed :)

there is no hiding from it

of course the content we consume modifies us, but now everybody "reads" the same book, whatever they read.

God damn metanoia.

I feel like the internet is programming me.

sorry man i cant even imagine what you are going through i didnt mean to be condescending or anything, i just truly believe that people are amazing

to be amazing however requires food and roof and a bit of luck

i honestly dont know what i would do without a job, its hard to break into trades i hear, and also seems to be hard in mcdonalds

i will probably start a tool and die shop or something, or a burger joint, smash burgers only (those the only ones i love to make)

i promise you this is not true

understand the chemistry of fats an denaturing of proteins, understand myoglobin; it is not much different than understanding anything.

nothing stops you from trying to make the best burgers in the world

be curious, ignorant and kind
