jackTheMan··on What happened to Russias Air Force? U.S. officials, experts stumped
Or this Putin is not the same Putin he was 8 years ago..
jackTheMan··on Apple execs: Let's take a 30% cut of Uber and Lyft's membership programs (2018)
It is also a difference in culture, americans tends to praise themselfs for every small things as a big achievement. In other countries one would not even consider this as an achievement, just a standard iteration to explore.

For me as well the first content is strange, that "I've invented subscription". It is basically just applying an existing pattern from not-so-much-different other field?

indeed amazon prime is the same, gym subscription is the same etc etc. Not sure what justifies the "no one ever done it"

jackTheMan··on Lithuania evacuates its embassy in China
Honestly I've never liked americans because of arrogance and the way of dealing with things, but the Communist-China really unites all democracy as it is a nightmare utopia. Can't imagine anybody reasonable wants to give more power/influence to a country that destroys all differences (in minorities), killing the languages, traditions, old structures everything traditional. There is even less value there than in US, money is the god, and who is a cheater is the smart. The rule is by force.

Did you see that the government hired thugs to beat up it's own people in HK? (and after used the police directly to do this?) It's said if a small irrelevant country is doing this, but if this becomes the standard of a global power, well I don't want to be nearby.

jackTheMan··on Lithuania evacuates its embassy in China
I haven't found anybody actually who would care, only for recent nationalistic voices. If that would be lowered, they wouldn't care less.

And even for those who "cared" I've explained, that imagine yourself as a Taiwanese, who had and always will have a better life than any mainlander. Would they want to have a dictator above themself who beat them up like they did with HKese? So far, I've found no mainlanders yet who would still insisted to take them over. (of course personally, in chat it might be different)

jackTheMan··on TikTok streaming software is an illegal fork of OBS
if they remove all surveillance stuff.. maybe not
jackTheMan··on Some experts suggest Omicron variant may have evolved in an animal host
It is absolutely scientifically ok to reject GMO, since they decrease variety and after x years of abundance in a year a superbug can destroy it all.

In case of GMO it is a play with the unknown (health, stability), it is a risk against a somewhat cheaper food. In case of vaccine it is still a play with unknown, but there the risk is against another risk not just money. If the virus would be less deadly much less people would have taken it. And the other way around as well, would be more deadly people would queue up instantly.

It is not as black and white as you describe. stupid vs smart people as you say it.

And by the way, this is called common smartness. Everybody is susceptible for different thing everybody is resistant to different things so the whole word is hard to take on.

jackTheMan··on Tech investors can’t get enough of Europe’s fizzing startup scene
Valuations is dubious regardless private/public. See Tesla or Rivian...
jackTheMan··on How my genius roommate changed my perspective
Better example might would be with LEGO, not everyone who plays LEGO is genius, but you can definitely be creative with what you have
jackTheMan··on Making the dislike count private across YouTube
Dont forget Beijing
jackTheMan··on Ask HN: How is the “metaverse” concept different from the Second Life boom?
Meta-pk-Facebook = Meta-previously-known-Facebook

would be better, because in case of the Meta-not-Facebook, 'not' might be strong enough to remember that way.

jackTheMan··on U.S. tightens export controls on items used in surveillance of private citizens
So apple cannot export the 'pedofil' image search to China?
jackTheMan··on False Pro-China Accounts Invade Twitter in the UK
... or just really nothing good happening on the religion side of China.
jackTheMan··on Building apps in minutes, not months
it was the same with GWT (google-web-toolkit) it looked nice and many jumped to the bandwagon. But when something didn't work as expected you had to know a lot about debugging javascript (the internal work of javascript) and guess about the generation logic from java and think backwards. After all, you had to know more (then simply js) for debugging! And of course if your boss wanted something custom..
jackTheMan··on Apple Delays Rollout of Child Safety Features
That is a huge-huge difference if they do it secretly, or if they do it announced.

If they get caught doing secretly this in China that would be a big blow. But if they are doing openly and it is known that the government provides the hash, they can wash their hands.

jackTheMan··on Why are hyperlinks blue?
Not sure why you are so aggressive. If you have worked for any reasonably big company you know that the official language does not necessarily matches the truth (and sometimes has 0 relation). I did not say any conspiracy, but even on the link you have attached Brendan says that you should look up the meaning of 'constructive dismissal' if I recall, that means the view you want to force on others is half truth at best.

Edit of the previous comment: "which does not *necesarily* relate to the real reason of the separation" .. ok this word was left out

jackTheMan··on Why are hyperlinks blue?
That is not quite true, DonHopkins only quote about the technical details of the separation, which does not relate to the real reason of the separation. But it is telling what lead to it.
jackTheMan··on Apple Has Opened the Backdoor to Increased Surveillance and Censorship
Even if it is possible in other ways as well today, this is a black pattern of going down step-by-step.

When it will be when people will say no? These are all small steps only.

jackTheMan··on Google and Facebook mandate vaccines for employees at U.S. offices
I'm not sure how abortion relates to this.

But genetically-modified food could be. By living in the US I'm not sure how OP can avoid it, as it is not labeled. So there you go with a long term exposure with unknown effect.

jackTheMan··on Google Offices to Mandate Vaccines
I hope people who don't take vaccine also ignore bio-engineered food. Wait it's not labeled in the US. So much about being scared of long term effect...
jackTheMan··on Out-of-control Chinese rocket expected to fall to Earth in the coming days
I would add that the lack of religion might also contributes to the chabuduo in China. As earning money overwrites everything over make things proper (or with pride). Also as the population is supersized the parazite behaviour can survive much better than in smaller places. This might can be compensated with the pointing system in the world of internet thou.

Anyway I don't think it's an overgeneralization. It is probably not the case for space rocket, but chabuduo also means the taped-together-bikes, the messy meat shop, driving the other side of the road, even if invisible following the promises standards etc. You meat with this every day guaranteed.

If somewhere than in Germany people are following the rules, tidy their environment etc. very very far from China.

Just take one example of the blind guide tiles. In Beijing and Shanghai I've already lost counts how many times it leads to an obstacle like cable post. In Germany, there would be not even one case even in country side...

jackTheMan··on Huawei was able to eavesdrop on Dutch mobile network KPN: Report
Or you could require it in the tender. Once they quote 25% overall cost compared to others, you can ask them to implement such a system for 25% more and come back later.

it can be a minimal requirement, more so if it is such a sensitive system.

jackTheMan··on Surface Laptop 4
Haven't checked, but screen resolution might helps to explain.
jackTheMan··on Surface Laptop 4
Yes this quite outrageous, probably intel is paying to have the "highest" configuration sadly. And this 16G is also soldered, so cannot be replaced afterwards...
jackTheMan··on AMA: Ivan Kutskir, creator of Photopea
I've worked for Amazon and all I had to do is getting permissions from teams and then do some config changes (or similar level programming) in their software.

Needless to say year-by-year I forgot everything I've learned before. My CV might got a boost, but my skillset decreased a lot. Only thing what I've learned is politics and how to push and decorate an empty promo doc.

I was a braindead when I finally got my stocks. So went back to the startup word, where I could thrive. The average lifespan was like 1 year there, most people did not even wait for the stock so basically worked cheap for amazon.

jackTheMan··on Volkswagen will not change name of U.S. operations: sources
I fear the other way, that Elon will jump on the next thing before Tesla becomes more than a rounding error.
jackTheMan··on The makers of Eleuther hope it will be an open source alternative to GPT-3
But even Russian/Chinese bots can step up as it is much easier now to flood forums (like reddit) etc, where e.g. a China critic article appears to kill any discussion.
jackTheMan··on You Suddenly Need to Stop Using Google Chrome
Why is it ironic?

I believe it is a fair warning, and if somebody he knows how easy to collect data through these companies. In some way he might be a not-radical Snowden.

jackTheMan··on We created a fake language to root out resume liars
I fall victim of this early in my carrier, if something is 'nice to have' they should say so. Requirement != nice to have

i was naive that time, but still angers me.

jackTheMan··on BTC Endgame

jackTheMan··on Tesla buys $1.5B in Bitcoin, may accept it as payment in the future
Tesla dropped even more (180->72) and since then it is hyped even more even so it still doesn't make profit from it's core business.

And since then lot of people hyped the bitcoin.
