j7f3··on Hexatrek: The long distance thru hike in France
Should be obvious for an average person.
j7f3··on Apple halted M2 chip production in January amid 'plummeting' Mac sales
I have an Asus G75 and I will never buy any hardware from Asus again. I rarely used that thing, basically once or twice per month yet the battery died after just a few years, then the keyboard, then the screen, and it weighs a ton too.

Like how cheap is very cheap? If you go 100 days and each night is 10 euros that's 1000 euros in additional costs. For some people it's a non starter.
j7f3··on Hexatrek: The long distance thru hike in France
There you go. That's why if I choose to go on a long distance hike it will be in the US rather than France.
j7f3··on Hexatrek: The long distance thru hike in France
Do they have a Michelin star system for campsites in France as well? With rankings for grass softness and lavatory fragrance?

5 days without a resupply is not bad at all. What about camping? Someone here said you are not allowed to pitch your tent on the trail. That would make the whole thing expensive and a logistical nightmare.

Western Canada alone is absolutely stunning and wild af. You won't find a wilderness like that anywhere in Europe anymore. It's not for the faint of heart at all. While I am a pretty experienced backpacker I stayed away from most remote areas in western Canada. Even a day trip would take me on a peak that would be hiked just a few times per year. Zero cell service too.

And then you quickly determine how horrible an idea it is. It allows people who are completely unprepared to hike in difficult terrain. They get in trouble and then call for help putting the mountain rescue people in danger. There are dozens of rescue missions like this every year in the Tatra mountains.
j7f3··on OpenSUSE Linux gains momentum
There is none. I was on Ubuntu and one day decided to give opensuse a try. Not everything works out of the box on my laptop eg to get screen dimming I had to download some extra drivers and edit grub config. On Ubuntu you can quickly find instructions how to fix it. On opensuse you're on your own. After fumbling around with config files for a few days went back to Ubuntu.
j7f3··on NPR cancels 4 podcasts amid major layoffs
Funny thing is almost everyone and their dog in Britain thinks BBC has been controlled by the Tories. I've not seen any evidence of CBC being overwhelmed by lefties either. People on the left size of the political spectrum constantly moan about CBC having too many conservative commentators and such.
j7f3··on Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Last Act
Yeah I have never followed him much at all but my gut feeling about him pretty much agrees with you. Still no one is perfect and I think he was a better than average politician among his peers. I think one of his problems was that in an era of tea party and trumpism taking over the republican party he had no hope there. His best bet in politics was probably running for Senate but I suspect he was more ambitious than that.
j7f3··on Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Last Act
Can you tell the difference between hearsay and reliable news?
j7f3··on MINIX from Scratch
Has it ever been a consensus best? Today xv6 is likely the most popular choice and before xv6 there was nachos and its more recent offshoots.
j7f3··on Seven sins of numerical linear algebra
head to ulaff.net, they have textbooks, a set of computer exercises, a code repository, youtube lectures, the whole nine yards really starting with linear algebra 101 and culminating with numerical linear algebra

their treatment of numerical linear algebra is not as comprehensive as say the one you'd find in Watkins' Fundamentals of Matrix Computations but it's free

j7f3··on School vs. Wikipedia
yeah that's rather correct when it comes to the English language Wikipedia

but the Polish language Wikipedia has been hijacked by the right wing nut jobs

it's public knowledge by now not to trust Wikipedia in Poland unless you're one of them

also Polish politicians use Wikipedia to boost their profiles, they treat is as a free self aggrandizement platform

everyone knows they edit their own profiles and wipe out any unflattering info

Polish Wikipedia is a poster child for what could go wrong when you leave editing to the common people

j7f3··on On AlphaTensor’s new matrix multiplication algorithms
in numerical analysis 101 you learn not to use algorithms that don't have certain properties and numerical stability is one of them

what good will it do to compute something if its error is unbound?

the issue of the accumulation of roundoff errors is generally speaking unavoidable when it's linear but fortunately they tend to be small

j7f3··on UK votes to leave EU
Not in this particular case. Like others have pointed out, it is not in the best interest of EU to give UK a sweet deal and it is not that hard to understand why. UK has had a sweet deal with the EU full of exceptional treatments. It can veto anything it wants and frequently exercises its right to do so but does not contribute much to the common piggy bank. But now UK wants to leave altogether, will not contribute financially at all but will have an even better trade deal? What message does it send to those who are loyal members of EU? That they will be financially penalized for their loyalty? There is no way Britain gets a decent deal at all.

I read that about 5% of EU's trade is with UK. It's not insignificant but it's not the end of the world if it goes down to 0.5%. We will fuck UK over, good riddance, we will be stronger without UK, now we will finally pursue tighter integration without fear UK will sabotage such attempts.
