j16sdiz··on ISO 8583: The language of credit cards
FAM was a (not so successful) attempt to standardise some existing usage
j16sdiz··on ISO 8583: The language of credit cards
I don't know the current state of affairs. Last time I worked on ISO20022 (almost 10 years ago), our system were doing a 1-to-1 mapping from ISO8583, keeping every bit of unmaintable shit one could imagine
j16sdiz··on Show HN: ImPlot3D – A 3D Plotting Library for Dear ImGui
This is a problem in C++ standard around #include<cmath> and #include<math.h>. see https://stackoverflow.com/a/11086087
j16sdiz··on Includeable minimal operating system for C++
I found the linked page very confusing, the whole page just say some generic unikernel stuffs

This page is much better, telling me how it is different/interesting https://www.includeos.org/technology.html

j16sdiz··on When should we require that firmware be free?
> Clearly, Brainfuck is out of the question, for example.

Ugh? Are you trying to make selling software written in brianfuck illegal?

> portable language

So all assembly bootstrap code are outlawed?

j16sdiz··on Principles of Educational Programming Language Design
> I think students should be taught in "professional" languages, but crossover is not my main reason. Rather, it's that professional languages have an enormous corpus of examples that students can look up.

PHP fits this description, and lots of self-learners get it as their first language. I am not sure we want to go that direction

j16sdiz··on Humans are unreliable models of mouse disease
Tell this to GNOME developers
j16sdiz··on Elon Musk wanted an OpenAI for-profit
> Isn't that almost everyone?

Sure. That's why we have contracts and laws to restricts how much one can change without paying or jail. Not every changes are equals.

j16sdiz··on The Pentium FDIV bug, reverse-engineered

j16sdiz··on macOS 15.2 breaks the ability to copy the OS to another drive
> > Acorn

> GIMP (or Glimpse, if you want a more modern UI) or Krita can definitely do pretty much anything Acorn can.

You will be surprised to know how some professional treat their tools.

Some illustrator love their software just like some mathematician love their chalk. Many woodworker make their own tools to make them feel just right.

> > MS Office

> LibreOffice would be the common alternative.

If you export them as PDF, maybe. If you need to exchange editable file with others, every small layout different hurts. You won't want your tables paginate differently from others.

j16sdiz··on Fermat's Last Theorem – how it’s going
She is more like complaining some (most?) RPF "bros" act like jerks, emotionally unstable, etc.

I guess the same can be said about many other "fanboi", and have little to do with the facts in the book

j16sdiz··on Fermat's Last Theorem – how it's going
Reading these threads makes me feel oddly familiar. This is the same discussion we have with Rust:

"You can't write everything in safe rust, therefore rust is worthless." vs "You must throw away all C code, or the whole industry will collapse"

except we have thousands of years of "unsafe" math, only a few decades of C.

> Abstract — There are disputes over the role of memorization in language learning. Memorized language, a mainstay of education for almost all of recorded history, was widely repudiated for suppressing creativity, understanding and enjoyment in learners. This paper aims at highlighting the fact that, despite these criticisms, memorization is a helpful strategy which can be employed by the learners and teachers in their process of language learning and teaching. It is discussed that memorization: 1) provides the learner with linguistic data; 2) is the first step to understanding; 3) enhances association in memory; 4) causes cognitive development as a learning strategy; 5) helps noticing; 6) provides rehearsal; 7) is especially helpful in early stages of learning. It is also pointed out that all these become possible when memorization is accompanied and complemented by other strategies and techniques.

j16sdiz··on Certificate Authorities and the Fragility of Internet Safety
> wouldn’t a potential solution be to layer independent verification mechanisms on top of the current system?

CT[1] allows some kind of external audit, but this is _mostly_ after the fact.

DNSSEC have much worse trust issue.

j16sdiz··on Oracle files notice of appearance for JavaScript trademark [pdf]
This is a much better url: https://ttabvue.uspto.gov/ttabvue/v?pno=92086835

In Claim 2, Deno shows Oracle basically just capture nodejs website and calms this trademark is still in use. How crazy this is.

j16sdiz··on Message order in Matrix: right now, we are deliberately inconsistent
> This is more disorienting IMHO than different message orders for different viewers.

the parent post is arguing this is less disorienting, and I agree.

j16sdiz··on FTC takes action against Gravy Analytics, Venntel for selling location data
This is a global trend.

"Public camera" (as in state/city owned) is the least of my worries -- I know who I should sue when the data are leak.

Many camera just put all footage on in some unsecured server in China or public S3 bucket .

j16sdiz··on FTC takes action against Gravy Analytics, Venntel for selling location data
It boils down to who have the right and what the exceptions are.

Sometimes I found it funny seeing people feeding fish to octopus, calming they are sentiment, and supporting abortion.

Surely no sane person would think "Octopus > Baby > Fish". We are just inconsistent, and never admit we are that inconsistent.

j16sdiz··on California teacher dies from suspected rabid bat bite
> total cost of this service is between $1,500 and $3,000.

As a non-us person, I can't understand how medical bill works in the state.

Surely this is some marked up price for insurance?

In Hong Kong, this is HK$215 ( ~US$30) per shot. You can get everything you need under US$200

j16sdiz··on Kubernetes on Hetzner: cutting my infra bill by 75%
I use Scaleway for my EU cloud needs.

This is a very low usage toy server, can't speak for performance/cost.

j16sdiz··on What happens if we remove 50 percent of Llama?
> Nobody understands how or why the router chooses the expert. It’s so early.

Nobody understand how LLM works either. Is LLM as "early" as MoE ?

j16sdiz··on Intel gets up to $7.9B award for U.S. chip-plant construction
Intel is not making profit.
j16sdiz··on Malware can turn off webcam LED and record video, demonstrated on ThinkPad X230
(not OP) Don't think that is inconsistent.

Trusting someone doing the right thing when you purchase is different from trusting them not tampering things remotely in the future. Companies can change management, human can change their mind. The time factor is important

j16sdiz··on The two factions of C++
Google do this to their internal monorepo.

This is one of the reason why they are bad at open sourcing - their internal code almost never match what is released

j16sdiz··on The two factions of C++
cppreference say strstream is removed in C++26, not C++23.

I knew they are bad, but I don't think it should be removed.
