j0hnyl··on GitHub Copilot is now available for free
I need to try it again. When I tried it I found it was kind of overblown and went back to copilot. I also wasn't sure whether to maintain two IDEs - Cursor for scaffolding new projects, and VScode for daily driving.
j0hnyl··on Show HN: SmartHome – An Adventure Game
He has had this theme in multiple works, the idea of paying your door to open was so on point. I think of it all the time when I see things like auto makers charging subscription fees for remote start, etc.
j0hnyl··on Show HN: SmartHome – An Adventure Game
I had the pleasure of trying this out before it was released. I think it's one of those things I can imagine might have a high bounce rate, but I would really like to encourage anyone checking it out to really give it at least 10-15 minutes. There are so many details and easter eggs and the frustration that's baked into the game design compounds quite nicely given some time.

EDIT: it's also more rewarding if you delay looking under the hood for a while.

When I saw the screenshot I almost laughed out loud at the thought that anyone would say this is innocent looking.
j0hnyl··on FDA proposes ending use of oral phenylephrine as OTC nasal decongestant
Maybe you're feeling relief from the other ingredients like if there's also an inflammatory or caffeine, etc. bundled with the pill.

Are you suggesting that chatgpt is as popular as it is because it's propped up by google in the serps?
j0hnyl··on Using Ghidra and Python to reverse engineer Ecco the Dolphin
--- By analyzing a memory snapshot from the flycast emulator, I found that the buffer at 8cfffb34 holds the visible portion of the initials you type in. But if you keep typing, the characters you put in before get pushed into the buffer at 8c3abf18.

After loading the memory snapshot into Ghidra, I found that the function at 8c0334d8 reads this buffer. It performs a transformation on the buffer and then checks whether the transformed value is a list of six special ones. ---

How?

I wish there was more detail on "how" this was done as opposed to just the "what"
j0hnyl··on Trump wins presidency for second time
You're probably right, but I think the popular vote stats tell a more realistic story of how the population actually sees things.
j0hnyl··on Trump wins presidency for second time
Trump is at 71.8 million votes compared to Harris at 66.9 million votes according to AP. That's somewhere between 7% and 8%
j0hnyl··on Trump wins presidency for second time
How is ~8% (eyeballing) of the popular vote a narrow majority in politics? It's a pretty substantial majority. Apathetic non-voters don't really count because they don't care.
j0hnyl··on Trump wins presidency for second time
They do have an instantaneous effect. The unemployment rate is toggled using interest rates and the impact is seen immediately.

j0hnyl··on ChatGPT Search
I think the promise of search was to be able to do confidence-ranked "grep" on the internet. Unfortunately we departed from this, but it's what I desperately want.
j0hnyl··on Ask HN: Is patio11's salary negotiation guide relevant in today's market?
I'm not sure how this works in practice. This means that timing of the offers needs to align pretty closely. How long will a company let you sit on an offer before they move on? I've only ever interviewed or worked at companies that are at most a few hundred people. When I get an offer, I'm pressured for an answer within days. Once or twice I've been able to stretch that to like 2-3 weeks.
j0hnyl··on Ask HN: Is patio11's salary negotiation guide relevant in today's market?
Strange, I've never had a company not go up from their initial offer. It's almost like it's baked in.

j0hnyl··on 1 bug, $50k in bounties, a Zendesk backdoor
If you google "Zendesk annual revenue" you will find that perhaps many of those 6000 employees are doing something after all.
j0hnyl··on 1 bug, $50k in bounties, a Zendesk backdoor
It's incredibly hard and resource intensive to run a bounty program, so anyone doing it for shortcuts or virtue signaling will quickly realize if they're not mature enough to run one.
j0hnyl··on The FBI created a coin to investigate crypto pump-and-dump schemes
The thing about crypto pump and dump schemes is that usually the folks issuing the tokens are the ones doing the pumping and dumping.
j0hnyl··on When net worth stops mattering
There's another thing that no one really mentions within this context and it's that people who are saving usually want to retire into something better, not the same slog they've been living while saving. That's why it's ridiculous when you read these FIRE forums and people get feedback like "Why do you need more money if your spending is only X".... well my spending is only X, because I'm saving to build a war chest for financial independence where I can actually live a better quality of life than I do presently.
j0hnyl··on Ask HN: Have you built something that users have become addicted to or overused?
I remember reading something about how there was a lot of heat on him, because he was essentially accused of stealing the game and that's the real reason why he took it down, not because he regretted creating something addictive... not sure if there's any truth to it, but then again why else would someone turn off a money printing machine at its peak?

j0hnyl··on Ask HN: What's the "best" book you've ever read?
Neuromancer is by far my favorite novel. On first reading, it felt to me like someone was finally describing the world in a way that I saw it, but couldn't articulate myself. I come back to it every couple of years and it never fails to entertain me.
