izacus··on Google breaks promise to provide 10 years of updates to Chromebooks
Except that they didn't reduce the period, they'll migrate people to new OS.
izacus··on Cops Can Bypass iPhone's Automatic Reboot to Get into Locked Phones
Self-incrimination yes, but not for cases when the person compelled has evidence to incriminate another process in a case.
izacus··on Google breaks promise to provide 10 years of updates to Chromebooks
What exactly is illegal here? Providing an update to a supported OS in last two years?
izacus··on Gemini 4 Argon
> Fewer people this year are starting new projects in C++ than last year, and fewer people than that will be starting new projects in C++ next year.

Let's put [Citation needed] on this and let's assume that your personal opinion bubble of developers doesn't really represent the combined worlds software industry. Mind actually proving that there's a significant decline of use of C++ outside the hype crowd?

> Why would one choose C++ for new projects at this point?

Why indeed would you choose a language supported on every running platform on this world with a massive library of supported dependencies and mature compilers developed by stable teams.

(I'd probably also personally choose Rust for new projects, but let's make this a practice in "not everyone is like me" empathy.)

izacus··on Gemini 4 Argon
Maybe you should check latest Google's earning calls - nothing what you describe is actually happening.
izacus··on Gemini 4 Argon
C++ will outlive you.
izacus··on GrapheneOS – When an app is slow
There isn't a single phone and OS release that wouldn't have a security improvements section: https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/platforms/android...

(I'll let you find the others yourself.)

How did you think Pixels got features GrapheneOS needs if the OEM wouldn't care about adding the Titan chip, modem APIs and all the other security features that are featured on pretty much every launch doc?

Cut the crap already.

izacus··on GrapheneOS – When an app is slow
I'm not going to play a game where you make up false shit and I do the work of disproving it while you move the goalposts with new false shit.

Android release notes are easy to find: https://source.android.com/docs/whatsnew/release-notes

So are marketing materials: https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/platforms/android...

and so are marketing materials: https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/devices/pixel/goo...

and each of those shows that security is pretty much a constant focus for everyone.

Dismissing all the security work done by other people because they didn't jump on your feature is insane behaviour.

izacus··on Memory Companies Have Destroyed the Consumer Market
> We are all Capitalists, until the Market comes after the stuff we love.

Anyone with half a brain isn't a "Capitalist" (with a big C, like in your example) which is why every single prosperous nation (including USA) regulates markets to avoid destruction of their prosperity and society.

izacus··on Memory Companies Have Destroyed the Consumer Market
No, and I don't know who keeps teaching you that nonsense.
izacus··on Memory Companies Have Destroyed the Consumer Market
> How should the memory companies have acted differently?

Same way nVidia did through the crypto insanity - make sure they're supplying enough to the consumer market so it doesn't get completely destroyed and pulls down the other parts of the consumer market they're reliant for long term success.

> Should we blame this on memory companies or the AI companies bidding for memory?

Blame doesn't change the outcomes, neither does it improve the negative consequences. Think in terms of "what does destruction of our consumer market mean for my prosperity?" not "oh, how do defend poor companies again?"

izacus··on Memory Companies Have Destroyed the Consumer Market
Way to miss the whole point of the article and fail to understand the point. Do you think if significant part of US industry goes bankrupt because they can't source parts for their products, work machines and consumers disappear... you'll still have luxury of running around in a Tesla?
izacus··on 500k facial scans at UK stations yield no arrests, 1 false positive
What are you on about? Arresting innocent people with face scanning is absolutely relevant - critical to this.

Locking you up in a cage for days when you did nothing wrong, dragging you into court where you need to defend your life is pretty much almost the worst thing a modern western state can do to you.

So it's kind of relevant if they're doing that.

izacus··on Palantir founder purchases large swath of forest in Sweden
That's ... huge.
izacus··on GrapheneOS – When an app is slow
Let's first start with y'all providing any proof that it was "benchmaxxing" that causes OEMs not to ship hardened allocators (and not - for example - breaking compatibility with users' software).

And then we can move the goalposts to "more secure distro with GrapheneOS" which isn't part of the conversation until you dragged it out.

izacus··on GrapheneOS – When an app is slow
That's trivially provable as false.
izacus··on European industry is doing better than you may think
It's Economist, their reporting in Europe was always very heavily biased and not very well researched.
izacus··on GrapheneOS – When an app is slow
Or maybe there's a reason why the mainline Android OEMs don't ship that allocator by default.
izacus··on Malleable software: Restoring user agency in a world of locked-down apps (2025)
Did TV, VCR, soundbar, monitor, laptop manufacturers end up stop manufacturing their devices because they had to talk to each other with a compatible HDMI format? And the user could swap out the TV device that played media from Apple TV?

Where do you get those silly ideas?

izacus··on The state of SIMD in Rust in 2026
Those are manually optimized per arch, aren't they?
izacus··on Breaking Up with Google Play: Why Conversations Is Now Free
That would then go against the wishes of people here for Google to be broken up and Android to self-fund, no? ;)
izacus··on Breaking Up with Google Play: Why Conversations Is Now Free
Google is funding Android fully from Play Store, since previous CFO the ad revenue isn't shared between parts.
izacus··on Nokia Design Archive (2025)
The problem was, they had no non-Qt strategy. Symbian was dying and horribly fragmented and they didn't really have anything else.

(We ended up shipping a webapp which was another kind of disaster on their phones).

izacus··on F-Droid 2.0
That document literally says that high quality option is the default.
izacus··on F-Droid 2.0
Yes, you toggle it once and that's it. It also moves with backups so new devices don't need that step.
izacus··on Nokia Design Archive (2025)
I dunno, I was a mobile developer at that time and moved from Symbian to Android/iOS and I didn't have a feeling Nokia engineering leads had any idea what they're doing either.

They tried to persuade us to use Qt to write apps (as alternative to iOS)... and they haven't shipped a single phone with Qt available as toolkit. They told us they might ship an update for N95 and perhaps one other model to pre install the library. At the time when they had literally hundreds of models.

When we finally put an app on their store, they failed to approve it in 6 months (!). Apparently because we chose the whole Europe as launch target so each country's Nokia office had to approve it separately. Silly us.

Afterwards we moved to Android (1.5, with 1.6 coming) and iPhoneOS.

izacus··on F-Droid 2.0
You are heard. But what's your point?
izacus··on F-Droid 2.0
The support for that was added to Android 14 in 2023: https://developer.android.com/about/versions/14/features#req...

F-Droid took until now to use those APIs.

izacus··on A brief history of Windows scroll bar shortcuts
The designers of your software and their bosses disagree though, default widgets don't provide "branding" and allow the poor designers to express themselves.
izacus··on Seattle City Council votes to ban surveillance pricing in sale of groceries
