Put 5k in NYSE:BND for your emergency fund, Fidelity/Vanguard/Etc work about the same. Then put 5500 in Roth IRA NYSE:VOO. Then do the same for your work 401k account if you have one. Put the rest in a brokerage account in NYSE:VOO, maybe save 5500 for 2018 IRA.

First put the drug cartels out of business by decriminalizing all recreational drugs including heroin. People will get drugs if they want them legal or illegal, tainted or not.

The next step is to provide safe injection and drug-exchange sites with immediately available drug counseling and detox. So an addict can trade 1g street-grade nasty drug for 1g medical-grade drug. Medical help needs to be available to swoop in right as they are coming down from the drug high. Hell, provide some free heroin to wean the drug addicts off of it on the condition that they participate in the detox programs.

This might sound like the unholy lovechild of libertarianism and nanny-state socialism, but I bet this ?pragmatic? approach will be cheaper in the long run, and centralize addiction/voluntary treatment in a location we [the people] can control. I have a 4k monoprice monitor. It works just great under ubuntu 14.04LTS with a Geforce 960 and the tested nvidia blob driver. Ubuntu allows 1.5x window title scaling, made things nicer.

It is not the fault of the landlords. Almost anyone would do the same given the same situation and ability to make a large amount of money. The problem is that the City of Seattle allows for the creation of new housing without the creation of enough affordable housing.

It would also be reasonable to index the level of income for new city-mandated apartments to the minimum wage. So if we have someone working for $15/hr (minimum wage) and 30k/yr who takes home $1939.26 monthly they should only be paying maximum 40% after-tax income into rent, which is 1939.26 * 0.4 = $775.70. Someone making $85k/yr will have a take home of $4997.46/mo, and can afford $1998.

So someone making minimum wage would not be able to afford their own apartment...

This is where the city government should take control, and mandate more low to medium income housing, and more micro apartments. South Seattle along the light rail would be a great area to build up, as it allows for easy access to downtown & Seatac jobs, and would finally stop some of the problems that we have seen here. In a year or two your wife could return to the workforce, then go for whatever startup is in fashion at the time. Being as tech startups are, it has a >50% chance of failure anyway.
