ixacto··on Ask HN: If you were starting your career today what would you do to get rich?
Medicine is an odd one. You need a bachelors + md + residency + possibly a fellowship to start practicing. Those are all competitive too. The residency will pay but only a little, and 4 years of medical school and living expenses will add up in living costs. So yes, if your parents are wealthy and willing to pay for it or it is the most important thing in life to do then medicine is the way to go.

Or you can go to a boring tech company and save about 50k/year for 10-15 years. This will be enough to achieve financial independence on and it will be possible to retire right when you would be beginning to practice medicine.

This is all only with a bachelors from a state school no extra-curricular or mcat stressing is necessary.

Also Medicine is not 100% and accidentally killing someone can get your license taken away. Done goof and break production you get a talking to and at worst fired but can probably find a new job shortly.

ixacto··on University of Oregon will monitor students' social media statements
It’s the exact same in-group/out-group tactic that the neo-conservative republicans were using in the early 2000s with terrorism e.g.

“if you’re not with us then you’re with the terrorists” == “if you’re not out protesting/twittering/tumblring then you’re with the white supremacy patriarchy.”

Actually quite interesting how you can use the same tactics in a totally different population and get people all riled up. Most likely just political maneuvering by parties to engage voters.

Looking at it objectively I also didn’t see the media covering the Tusla massacre (as abhorrent as it was) nearly as much as they have been in the last couple days, which does lead to the suspicion that the coverage is politically motivated.

ixacto··on University of Oregon will monitor students' social media statements
Well in the current ideological climate "silence is violence", as they say, damn this 1984ificaton of speech sucks. More specifically I think this is targeted at any views they don't like which really sucks.

It's a public university which means you have to see even the views that you don't like.

ixacto··on University of Oregon will monitor students' social media statements
The thought police strike again! More realistically the university is running brand protection...
ixacto··on Amazon refused to refund $7k after shipping an empty box instead of a Sony A1
It was sarcasm. Just tired of addicts shooting up and hassling me as I walk down the street, as well as attempting to sexually assault my friends.
ixacto··on After years of conflict and instability, Iraq is opening up to tourism
Yes but we don’t know. Saudi Arabia could be a secular dictatorship/kingdom similar to Turkey or Syria by then.

Iraq might be much more inclusive by then.

Then again Turkey could go full Islamist crazy and be more Saudi Arabia and Erdoğan could declare himself president for life.

But I think globalization will somewhat liberalize all of the above in the coming years, and the desire to fit in and do business globally will push for liberalization.

ixacto··on Amazon refused to refund $7k after shipping an empty box instead of a Sony A1
I literally had an Amazon delivery person (err..1099 contactor?) throw a package over the fence at my apartment complex last year and hit my window. They do not care, add to this the piles of amazon boxes the differently-housed are grabbing off of porches and it's a real mess.
ixacto··on Think critically about college admissions
The only problem is that this is arguably a political decision by a non-political employed role.
ixacto··on Think critically about college admissions
Time to fire the admissions staff for not enacting the will of the voters.
ixacto··on Ask HN: Favorite purchases of last two years?
Got some Sony XM4 noise cancelling. Totally worth the $200 for them and they work great with zoom.
ixacto··on Gen Z is going to have a hard time getting rich
Houston does not have zoning, and the sky has not fallen there. What we have in the rest of the country is an incentive structure that is firmly on the side of rent-seeking and NIMBYism.

It is literally built into our tax code, with the mortgage interest deduction and California’s subsidy of the boomer Generation with the drastic reduction of real estate taxes.

It is ridiculously easy to solve the housing problem in SF, just tear down the single family homes and replace with high rise apartments at HK-level density. But the entrenched interests don’t want to do that.

ixacto··on Bitcoin Miners Are Giving New Life to Old Fossil-Fuel Power Plants
Ok so you now have only single-origin bitcoins available that are legal to purchase though a government dealer?

What if it is a worldwide mining pool that is paying out worldwide, like most coin mining pools currently do?

That would result in income earned in many different tax jurisdictions paid to many more tax jurisdictions, kinda impractical as the pool is contributing compute but the winnings are shared among all the miners.

And would we just use the honor system for Monero mined in China/India/Africa/Indonesia/wherever? There is no incentive apart from these hypothetical miners import agreement being revoked to not mix the coins up.

This might sound a little crass, but while I do agree that wind, solar, and nuclear are the future of power generation I also believe that cap and trade and its resultant currency of offset credits are morally equivalent to the indulgence system that the catholic church had set up in the medieval thorough early modern era.

So basically when Bill Gates is trying to offset his carbon credits he's basically paying the priests of his new religion to be able to fly all over the world without a guilty conscience, whilst the poors are agonizing over bagging their groceries with plastic bags because the red states don't want to ban them.

ixacto··on Rich people do have trouble understanding what it's like to be poor
The government already forces me to pay for other people's children though our child welfare system that I mostly support. WIC/CHIP/Preschool yield enormous economic benefits.

Having Aircraft carriers and military bases all over the world doesn't. Raising the personal income tax exemption to 100k would.

ixacto··on How to get rich without being lucky (2019)
Define unfeasible. This country operated just fine for over 100 years without an individual income tax.

And do we really need like 12 aircraft carriers?

ixacto··on Bitcoin Miners Are Giving New Life to Old Fossil-Fuel Power Plants
More like perpetually being stuck in a cycle of voter appeasement to get re-elected because they are “doing something”...
ixacto··on Bitcoin Miners Are Giving New Life to Old Fossil-Fuel Power Plants
This would give an advantage to Bitcoin miners in 3rd world countries where carbon credits and other fanciful notions are optional.

We [the developed world] would be outsourcing our Bitcoin pollution to these 3rd world countries and also contributing to “environmental racism” or whatever the left is calling it these days.

ixacto··on How to get rich without being lucky (2019)
I’d say taxes are halfway stealing and halfway actually doing good things for society.

Paying income taxes into the national debt and finding the military industrial complex is not that appetizing. That is just allowing for geopolitical shenanigans and bombing poor people the world over. Also funding the state governments (hello CA/NU) that think that they are small countries is ridiculous.

Paying property taxes to fund EMS/schools/roads is an entirely different thing that I fully support.

But yeah, right now as a whole we are paying way too much tax IMO and could get away with paying like half if we got rid of the military and bloated government. Then you could have the first 100k that you make you actually get to keep.

ixacto··on Rich people do have trouble understanding what it's like to be poor
This is a relative statement. I never wanted kids they are annoying and I’d probably end up a terrible parent and get divorced and then be paying child support. In fact this would have been what happened if I stayed with my last gf.

Much better to be able to FIRE by 35 instead haha.

ixacto··on Let’s Talk About Hot Tub Streams
They want the simp $ but without being a porn site. So twitch will just evolve into girls-gone-wild light.

This is kinda hilarious though some brand managers must really be squirming when they are tying to sell advert spend for furniture or something on the twitch beach boob cam.

ixacto··on Ask HN: How much do you contemplate per week?
Went in an all afternoon hike yesterday up to a mountain lake as soon as my afternoon meetings were done. Thought about the life universe and everything. It was great, going to do it more.
ixacto··on Woke at Work: Why tech firms are trying to run away from politics and failing
It would be possible to say that one was not hired about all groups, including White Christian men. This happens a lot but no one talks about it for some reason.

E.g. we didn’t really feel that Mr. Ciswhitechristan was a great cultural fit because we are trying to foster a diverse and equitable workplace and we need more protected groups. /s

ixacto··on Judge in Fortnite case holds Tim Cook's feet to the fire
Being able to dual boot or virtualize Ubuntu and windows 10 on an M1 iPad Pro with 16gb of ram and a touchscreen would be great.

Parallels already runs on m1 it wouldn’t be very hard to enable on m1 iPads.

It is honestly a better form factor than the laptop as you can just plug in a thunderbird dock and get expanded ports.

ixacto··on Woke at Work: Why tech firms are trying to run away from politics and failing
Advocating for what things exactly?

It might be a strawman, but I’m going to guess and it would be something like an end to perceived workplace raceism/sexism/*isms.

If you let in political advocacy movements from the left do you really want political movements from the right? Or is it just ok if the left is advocating for it? I kinda think the left is trying to have their equity cake and eat it too…

To some people (I am not one of them at all, but I understand the argument) any abortion is literally murder, and it as a sincerely held belief as the recent movements like BLM and #metoo were.

So do you really want to hear about abortion/guns/illegals/debt/satanism/furries in the workplace? This is just setting up workplaces for problems or maybe we can just realize work is for work?

ixacto··on Face masks effectively limit the probability of SARS-CoV-2 transmission
I wore a mask indoors. Then I got the vaccine. COVID is effectively over, unless we need booster shots this fall.

But feel free to wear a mask as much as you want, at this point it is effectively a security blanket though.

ixacto··on Treasury Calls for Crypto Transfers over $10k to Be Reported to IRS
You are finding that corruption, but at some point “render unto Caesar” is just about the only viable option. I personally view the government as amoral, it is not supposed to be the source of morality that is your own personal responsibility.
ixacto··on Ask HN: What are some good podcasts with similar content to Hacker News
Lex Fridman when he’s talking to big names in STEM subjects. If he’s taking martial arts or comedians that’s a little too close to the JRE but tech he’s great IMO.
ixacto··on The End of Retirement (2014)
What will happen is that inflation will cause these promises to be meaningless and throw many elderly into poverty or menial jobs in their old age, hello Walmart greeters...

Getting 1x social security is not going to work when you get rent that is going up 2x as fast. But somehow the market basket of goods will still stay at 2%yoy…

Or we could just start having large families again like some groups (Hasidic Jews, Amish, some Evangelicals) do but I don’t think there’s much political will for that.

ixacto··on The End of Retirement (2014)
The US tax system is designed by people who in theory represent the will of the people, but in reality that are advocating for special interests.

You have things like SALT tax deduction and mortgage interest tax deduction which are directly designed to benefit rich liberals in blue states by subsidizing their oversized government. Take these away and people get mad or move to TX/FL/NV because they actually have to pay their full taxes.

Also having a high state sales tax is much more logical if you don’t want to pay tax just don’t spend money.

It would make much more sense to just do a federal sales tax, totally eliminate the corporate tax as people are paying taxes anyway and it is just a disadvantage to us-domiciled corporations competitiveness, and also totally eliminate fed and state income taxes. Like purge them with fire, there’s way too much complexity and corruption built up over the last hundred years.

Then if you still care about people at the end just institute UBI and Medicare for all to eliminate the billing complexity and potential for discrimination. This policy would also be compatible with open borders and free movement of labor if we as a society decided we want that.

ixacto··on Vaccinated Americans now may go without masks in most places, the CDC said
The individuals on Twitter are an extremist “mob” on both sides of the political spectrum that really has little relevance to larger society, except for politicians and the like who use it for communication.

Follow the science and draw your conclusions for your own life and don’t let the mob bully you, they are living in a world where dogma/politics trumps science [full disclosure that is word choice, I’m independent btw & not a Trump supporter].

I double masked up until 2 weeks after the second mRNA shot (early April), at which time COVID was effectively over for me. If others want to wear masks for years of that makes them feel better that’s totally ok, but the reality is that the pandemic is over for the vaccinated, although I’d get a booster if needed.

Also if we do have to wear masks for another pandemic I absolutely will, but not any longer than needed they really mess with my ability to read facial expressions and communicate.

The political landscape has also changed now so that the government is forced to admit that and now the fully vaccinated can go shopping without masks. It is about damn time. This pandemic has damaged the mental health of the nation but finally rolling back restrictions is the best way to give everyone an end to the pandemic that is in sight.

ixacto··on Ask HN: What passive income investments exist to supplement your salary?
It is a single investment that is government-subsidized with loan-interest subsidies, that you can live in, that also people tend to have great emotional attachment to an unhealthy extent.

Home loans at least in the United States taken out at usually 5x leverage which would never fly for index funds but is ok for some reason for buying a home, even though you could become unable to pay the mortgage in which case the bank has to spend money foreclosing and selling it.
