ixacto··on Why doesn’t natural immunity count in the US?
To reply as the devils advocate to this comment, what is the tolerance to social costs that society is willing to bear? Also why would one segment of society have to do something that it doesn't want e.g. not bear risk if they want to?

Should we tell people to get their BMI under 25 too? Overweight and obesity are going to cost much more in increased healthcare costs than COVID will in the coming decades (pls prove me wrong..).

What about drinking and smoking? Maybe we should also ban these because these people will probably go on government health insurance when they come down with chronic health issues from too much alcohol or tobacco.

I guess I don't see where your argument about societal costs doesn't become a slippery slope.

Also full disclosure I'm 100% vaccinated and will get the booster in Dec.

ixacto··on Ask HN: When is Apple's EV going to be released?
Tesla tells you what parts that can be replaced on your car, along with a ton of privacy invasion.

Predictions: Tesla is the new Android of cars

Apple is the apple of cars

Apple doubles market cap to 5.0T by 2030-2035. The cap jump will be due to the introduction of the iCar and also getting non-invasive blood glucose monitoring to work. Just a guess.

ixacto··on Financial literacy is a passport to financial freedom
It’s possible to get them off of r/personalfinance and r/fire.

Meanwhile the high school accounting class that I was going to take was teaching how to day trade rather than actual accounting or personal finance.

The advice to save half your income and go into a well paying career is not that difficult to follow if you grow up poor in this country and know where to look.

ixacto··on Financial literacy is a passport to financial freedom
This is illogical, I don’t buy their argument. Just open up a bank account that doesn’t have fees and use that.
ixacto··on Personal finance experts don’t get wealthy by following their own advice
This is not the greatest advice. Something more akin to being a software developer or travel nurse and then FIRE would be a better message to preach…

Then you get to retire at like 40 with a much higher probability of success.

ixacto··on Tell HN: Spotify says either give us your home address or you'll be charged
Can probably set it to a random address in a no tax state e.g. OR/NH/DE.

Paying sales tax online for digital goods sucks. This is for the accountants to say they are compliant.

ixacto··on Ask HN: Tinder is full of fake profiles, posted by Tinder. How to prove?
Set up a fake okcupid profile a couple years ago. Set “Woman interested in Women”. The inbox was still overflowing with messages from men.
ixacto··on CDC Internal Delta Variant Presentation
Not sure if I’m on the spectrum or what but it’s horrible trying to read expressions in a masked conversation, as in I can’t.

Masks were not great for mental health, but apparently that doesn’t matter as much as virtue signaling.

ixacto··on Fairtax
Why should the government be allowed to incentivize our behavior in the first place?

I’d ask this from a philosophical standpoint here, not really a legal one as this could be applied to other non-US governments as well.

If I want to sit attend and eat cheeseburgers all day and be morbidly obese should the government try and incentivize me to go to therapy and a weight loss clinic?

If I want to follow a religion that is very different from the status quo e.g. Ultra-Orthodox Judaism or the Old Order Amish Mennonite Church and live apart from society should the government be ok with this or instead try to incentivize me to a certain behavior?

Should we use a tax-incentive to encourage having more children or getting the COVID vaccine?

There are lots of unforeseen costs here. I’d say this is not the best idea to incentivize anything. Way too many unintended consequences of tax incentives.

ixacto··on Google and Facebook mandate vaccines for employees at U.S. offices
Half the country thinks it is an existential threat. Half the country thinks it's a bad flu. About 612,000 people have died from it, that's more than WW2 which lead to the modern international political and economic systems. So yeah, change is happening IMO.

What we're doing now is proving the efficacy of using a mRNA vaccine platform to rapidly deal with a pandemic at a speed that has never been done before. So far the vaccine has worked great. Now we need to establish global distribution chains and make sure that in the event of an even worse pandemic we have options to vaccinate against it.

ixacto··on Google and Facebook mandate vaccines for employees at U.S. offices
You can't opt out of the draft. If you work at FB/Google tell your manager the two magic words "I QUIT" and don't get the vaccine and go work somewhere that makes you happier.

AFAIK these companies are still at-will private employers and vaccination status is not a protected class. So they can fire anyone they want including all the anti-vaxxers, at any time they want, for whatever reason they want including vaccination status.

ixacto··on All bets are off if the Fed and White House are wrong about inflation
The costco auto program makes buying a car pretty easy. Zero haggling at least.
ixacto··on All bets are off if the Fed and White House are wrong about inflation
My early 2000s car went up in value by 30% according to credit karma last year.

This should not be happening. Something is Broken.

ixacto··on Ash HN: Pro-natalist initiatives thanks to technology?
Well religions increase population. Some religion like Mormonism (lds) are more explicit about the population increasing.
ixacto··on Daniel Hale, who leaked information on U.S. drone, sentenced 45 months in prison
Frustrating that we can’t really do anything to dismantle the imperialist war machine killing innocents on the other side of the planet.
ixacto··on Tell HN: YouTube is asking for age verification to watch Bret Weinstein's video
Wonder if the is verifiers will be using a gov backend for identity verification?

It’s kinda easy to photoshop an ID + passport so these systems can be abused. Could also use a convolutional neural network to generate a new photo.

ixacto··on Half of US states now using facial recognition to vet unemployment claims
Maybe they will give you 10% off coupon for their premium identity service as part of the breach settlement?
ixacto··on How to spot a good fake ID
Tell that to the 73.6%[0] of Americans who are overweight or obese, but that the government doesn't care too much about it, in fact they subsidize it[1] via the farm bill & friends. Being overweight or obese will shorten your life [2]. Also the US gov doesn't care, as it's own dietary reccomendations differ from accepted nutritional guidelines e.g. Harvard nutrition plate[3].

IMO the government should not be in the business of policing one's health, or advocating for the people's health, as the USDA and associated agencies are demonstrably corrupted.

ixacto··on The economic value of targeting aging
Sortof. But the assholes do know a bit about science, and are taking an arguably conservative view on pharmacological interventions in the treatment of aging to prevent possible problems. For example this trial: Targeting the Biology of Aging. Ushering a New Era of Interventions. The official web resource of the TAME Trial, managed by the American Federation for Aging Research.

they are not saying that taking metformin slows aging, merely that it delays development of chronic illnesses. What we should be asking is if metformin is actually slowing down the biological aging process. https://www.afar.org/tame-trial

ixacto··on Over ear wireless headphone recommendations for many hours of coding?
Sony WH-1000XM4. Works great for cancelling out the dog yipping during multi-hour zoom meetings.

Edit: bluetooth works great with macOS and does not have the audio sync issues that Bose 700have even though the XM4 do not have bluteooth low latency chip.

ixacto··on Bezos donates $100M each to CNN contributor Van Jones and chef Jose Andres
We need to make humanity a multi-planetary species, Mars is just the beginning. The moonshot is just a tech validation, then we can send humans to the rest of the planets and the belt too.

Figuring out how to solve pollution on Earth is also doable with modern technology. We can terraform Earth to be more habitable as well, we could melt the antarctic icecap and colonize it. Maybe even make a new civilization there without as many problems [government/bureaucracy as we have in the rest of the world?

ixacto··on Pelosi and a lifetime of trading
And 87% over 15 years fail to beat the s&p500. With a >10yr investment horizon 100% in VTSAX is the way to go IMO. Then just calculate your budget and start to sell into treasury bonds at the 10 year mark based on how much money is needed.

They should probably teach FIRE in high school, but of course not you got to keep everyone enslaved to debt and learning about ancient history.

ixacto··on Ask HN: How should I setup my M1 mac for software development
Docker/Chrome/Vscode/Github Desktop/brew & friends all work great now. Having one of the fastest single-threaded speed was worth the launch day problems.
ixacto··on The IRS Is Struggling to Keep Up–and That’s Bad for Everyone
The IRS is the symptom of our totally incompetent and dysfunctional government that we have. Good luck even getting in touch with them right now.

IMO we should just abolish the IRS and replace income taxes with a 10-20% VAT tax and be done with it. Payroll taxes and capitol gains taxes can be automatically reported and remitted from employers and brokerages respectively. Intuit and their ilk can adapt or go out of business.

ixacto··on Ask HN: How do you make money on the side?
You could try photography and move on to wedding/engagement photography.
ixacto··on Ask HN: What do you want life to be like in 10 years, and how can we help?
-Ranked choice voting in the United State for federal elections

-At least 5 different political parties

-UBI Yang-style $1000/mo with a 10% VAT tax to fund it

-Much lower taxes on the first 100k of income, government files taxes automatically

-Much lower regulations to start a small business or work independently, having to forecast 1099 income for quarterlies is idiotic and politicians don't care...

-10x NASA budget targeting a colony on the moon & mars within 10 years

-10x budget to NIH, study how to have longer healthier lives

-Medicare for all, for citizens and non-citizens this is accomplishable with sales based taxes and switching from income based taxes

-Get rid of most zoning in most cities

-Get rid of most border controls, mostly open borders but more severe penalties for violent crime

-Nationwide fibre network, 1000/1000megabit connection is standard to all homes

-Forgive all student loan debt, and stop giving government-funded loans

-Less social media use

ixacto··on Under the skin of OnlyFans
The NCAA is much more predatory. Yes you get free college but sports can be the focus 100% of the time, then there is no focus on academics.

So when you don't get drafted, there is a little problem...

Onlyfans is stupid, hopefully noone has faced violence in the real world from it.

ixacto··on Tahoe's hiring crisis is unraveling small businesses during its busiest season
We absolutely have an artificial housing supply shortage, that is induced by homeowners loving 15%+ year over year housing market increases and not wanting the undesirables to move in or be able to afford housing in the first place.

It would be so much more simple to say you can just buy a lot for maybe $25000 and put one of these garden sheds in and live on it https://www.costco.com/stonecroft-12'-x-10'-wood-storage-she.... There you go, full housing setup for under $30000, but it would be a very low standard of living, but much nicer than sleeping in a car or on the street. In many populated counties it is illegal to sleep on your own land if you don't have an inspected house or utility hookups.

ixacto··on Google Drive bans distribution of “misleading content”
What if it turns out the COVID did come from a lab. Will it still be “hate mongering” the “others” then? Or do we start embargo if the PRC?

The left likes to call anything they don’t want to talk about “hate” or “racist” these days.

This usually happens when upper middle class liberals get offended on minorities or “others” behalf.

The Orwellian newspeak is also not helping.

ixacto··on Apple removes ‘Fakespot’ app from iOS App Store following Amazon request
Monetization could be selling training data to big Amazon sellers on sentiment analysis of products. Or they just start whitelisting products, kinda like adblock does the "acceptable ads" we now have acceptable garbageproducts.
