ix101··on LastPass says hackers had internal access for four days
I don't think that's correct. They state that passwords are decrypted in the browser. They are stored encrypted on their servers but not decrypted on their servers AFAIK
ix101··on Covid: Summary of lab-origin hypothesis
The question is whether in the process of studying it they intentionally created modified viruses, and that was what leaked.
ix101··on The forty-year programmer
A lot of software being written is to solve the "problem" of humans doing repetitive/simple work that can be automated. Interesting to ponder that say a year of development may prevent tens of thousands of man hours of staff being paid for their time. This trend causes life to be less and less personal whereby we might have interaction with another person for simple things like groceries and banking being completely replaced with tapping on a screen and occasional frustration as every company has their own custom UI that has to be understood to interact with the business' processes.
ix101··on Tell HN: Google Cloud suspended our production projects at 1am on Saturday
If a driver gestures to cross and hits the brakes and the brakes don't work it's hard to blame the driver if they didn't design the car. Just saying it might be more of a technical issue and the behaviour probably wasn't normal/expected.
ix101··on I need to stop being boring
I suspect that people who haven't had kids will not like to admit that they have any regrets about their decision, just like you will rarely find a parent that will say they wish they hadn't had a child.

Once you're over a certain age you can't really change your mind. Some people decide to focus on their careers, but becoming a parent doesn't mean you won't reach your career goals.

ix101··on Why babies cry in the first three months, how to tell them apart, and what to do
The flip side though is that you are likely to feel more pressure to accumulate enough wealth in order to leave something behind for your children. Personally I have to shake off this instinct that I should take the more stable career choice rather than the interesting one.
ix101··on Ask HN: Why dont operating systems make sounds anymore
Rationale for the startup sound for an OS may have been the considerably lengthier time from power on to login screen, which has reduced to seconds nowadays.
ix101··on My Path to Financial Independence as a Software Engineer
The article gives some general advice on how to manage your personal wealth. Probably the exact figures could have been expressed as percentage increases to give the article more appeal. However, for budding engineers in the early stage of their career it gives some idea of what is potentially achievable (in US).
ix101··on Why Finnish babies sleep in cardboard boxes (2013)

ix101··on Ask HN: What is something important I should start doing in my 20s?
A 30-fold return is achievable with just over 7 percent average return after 5 decades. No guarantees of course but with diversified investments it's probably not much of a stretch. Stock Market crashes have typically recovered relatively quickly and continued on up.
ix101··on Piracy release group EVO ‘blames’ movie industry for its popularity
Zoom out a bit and take a group of friends 20 years ago vs now. A CD would commonly be shared/ripped, unlikely that everyone in the group buys the same record. Nowadays I wouldn't be surprised if sharing music is much less common since the monthly fee is quite low and good value.
ix101··on Amazon Ion – A richly-typed, self-describing, hierarchical serialization format
Natural file extension will be .ai despite having no relation to AI
ix101··on Ask HN: What huge mistake did you make early in your career?
The effect of compound interest. Second time your money doubles and you've quadrupled your original investment. Requires patience and self-discipline though!
ix101··on Ask HN: What huge mistake did you make early in your career?
Quite common I imagine. For many folks acquiring knowledge is almost a hobby, and expanding your network of contacts is a challenge.
ix101··on Time flies in Google Earth’s biggest update in years
> all of these steps are politically impossible.

Probably fair to say that it's not low hanging fruit then.

I think a lot of time is being spent on finding politically correct solutions, but maybe we'll come full circle back to your solution after wasting a lot of time with fancy solutions that don't have a significant enough effect.

ix101··on Time flies in Google Earth’s biggest update in years
Maybe he's referring to what has been dominating news headlines for the past 14 months.
ix101··on Google’s Internal Data Show Engineers Found It Harder to Code from Home
The economic uncertainty is quite likely to be a motivator more than a detractor. I.e. remote teams are keen to prove they are working highly effectively in order to prevent being near the top of the list if the company is forced to down-size.
ix101··on .NET Orleans
Possibly they preferred a city named "new "? Maybe they didn't like NET York..
