How do you figure the average geek is outgunned? There are multitudes of small HFT shops staffed mainly by geeks in Manhattan doing pretty well. HFT tends not to be profitable enough for banks to bother with, especially if you have to pay most of your profits to the programmers behind it so they don't leave and do it themselves.

Really? I don't think nuclear war is more likely these days than it was during the 60s and 70s. If anything I think that possibility has greatly decreased given the interdependence almost every nation has on other nations.

Aren't most artificial sweeteners only 40-50 years old? Asbestos has been used for 4500 years but only in the past 100 have we realized its dangerous.
iwejfweoifjweif··on Perl Regex Removed From Grep in Mountain Lion
Its not close to GNU tools but its very true to Unix tools. Many of the tools have the same options (if not the same man pages) as their Free/Open/NetBSD versions.
iwejfweoifjweif··on Recruiter Disruption Rant
Perhaps in reference to "penguin murdering" he means people who sacrifice penguins to make sure that linux machines run correctly?

Or is there a religion that does murder penguins and he's referring to that?

iwejfweoifjweif··on Strange phone number: asks for Agent Code, gives encoded coordinates.
The number seems to be owned by Level3, so its likely that its a VOIP line unless Level3 does regular phone circuits in the Denver area. (Source: http://www.telcodata.us/search-area-code-exchange-detail?npa...)

Agreed, I'm also not sure why he didn't just use the SOCKS proxy in ssh as opposed to sshuttle. ssh -D8080 and then point your network config to localhost 8080 as the local proxy and everything is encrypted.
iwejfweoifjweif··on Tunneling Below Second Avenue (for New Subway)
I agree but going from JFK to Penn Station via the LIRR/Airtrain isn't too bad. From the Jamaica station I think its 1-2 stops?

Ideally there would just be a train every hour from Penn Station and Grand Central directly to JFK and LaGuardia but I don't see that happening in the next 20-50 years.

iwejfweoifjweif··on Tunneling Below Second Avenue (for New Subway)
As some comments say on that page, there are numerous technical details as to why it isn't nearly as simple as proposed. AFAIK you can't easily run LIRR trains to NJ because only a few engines support catenary operation, everything else requires a third rail to be built.

So while this might get us a few percent increase in the number of trains for now, at the cost of a few hundred million to build out third rails in NJ (or catenaries in LIRR areas where NJ transit trains might be routed), it doesn't change the fundamental infrastructure issue given the growth of mass transit in the NYC metro area.

iwejfweoifjweif··on Coding Horror: The PHP Singularity
That makes sense then. There is more of a shift in thinking going from html to python vs php.
iwejfweoifjweif··on Coding Horror: The PHP Singularity
Why is python or ruby too hard for your dad to learn? If anything I would think something like ruby would be even easier than php since things are a bit more consistent.

I just don't see how PHP is more approachable, especially compared to the supposed ease of ruby on rails.

iwejfweoifjweif··on New York to London in an hour - by train
If its only taking him 45 minutes he's probably not driving in and parking, he's probably taking mass transit on a system that is quite overloaded. So no, you didn't solve his problem, but nice try.
iwejfweoifjweif··on New York to London in an hour - by train
There is a river in between. You would need to bike up to the George Washington assuming he lives in Hoboken and commute to Midtown. Either way you go from a 45 minute commute to maybe a 2-3 hour commute if you are lucky. Even worse since now using a bike his commute is ~20 miles instead of the 4 in the first place.
iwejfweoifjweif··on Mercurial vs Git: Why Mercurial?
I haven't looked at the pricing for BitBucket but it seems (in my experience) you can have as many contributors as you want in an "organization" on GitHub and you only pay based on the number of private repos that organization has and forks of those repos don't count.

Is that not your experience?
