ivarv··on Self-Hosting on the Dark Web
A bit late to the party but check out https://github.com/brewsterkahle/onionpress/ - it's an effort to make self-hosting on Tor hidden services as easy as possible.
ivarv··on Open Source Low Tech
Here's a similar project focused on agtech & iot - https://github.com/mitra42/frugal-iot

If anyone else has pointers to low cost sensor network appropriate for small scale farms please share!

ivarv··on Show HN: New Benchmark from SWE-bench team is 0% solved
This looks pretty interesting, but I don't understand why decompilers are not allowed. If this benchmark was aimed at recreating a SASS/server based product then it might make more sense, but given the fact that decompilers are readily available in practice the "no read" restriction seems to artificially increase the challenge level.
ivarv··on Don't make me talk to your chatbot
For a similar take see Cory Doctorow's recent "No one wants to read your AI slop" - https://pluralistic.net/2026/03/02/nonconsensual-slopping/#r...
ivarv··on AI generated music barred from Bandcamp
Spotify hires musicians to churn out content that fits certain criteria. see https://harpers.org/archive/2025/01/the-ghosts-in-the-machin...
ivarv··on MDMA and the Quest for Connection in a Fractured World
While not 100% exactly what you're looking for, Huberman Labs episode on MDMA is pretty close. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slUCmZJDXrk The "don't lose the magic" supplementation is addressed but it is speculation based on anecdotal evidence and conjecture.
ivarv··on Plan for 55,000-acre utopia dreamed by Silicon Valley elites unveiled
I'm surprised at the investment in an area that's likely to undergo major environmental challenges but it will be fascinating to see how this turns out. Superficially it looks like an American version of Neom.

ivarv··on Reduction of sulfur emissions from ships may be causing rising sea temperatures
It could be Guy McPherson ? - https://guymcpherson.com/
ivarv··on Ggwave: Message people over sound
Could this enable embedded as metadata in audio files? Ie: could this be similar to what Spotify might use to fingerprint the music they distribute?
ivarv··on De-cloud and de-k8s – bringing our apps back home
indeed - the presenter (dhh) is Danish, and there was a photo of a container ship near the beginning of the demo video.
ivarv··on Cosmic DE update: System76's new Linux desktop environment
I bought my S76 laptop via my work's "choose your own workstation" program. It's a great way to support continued development of the software I use PLUS when you buy via S76 you get lifetime support for the device. The support is not something I've made use of often, but it certainly paid off the one time I needed it. Basically, it depends on your idea of "value" - do you value money (buy cheaper hardware) or time (buy S76 with support)?
ivarv··on Scaling Mastodon is impossible
fwiw - there are at least two production ready servers that coexist as twitter-like social hubs - https://git.pleroma.social/pleroma/pleroma and https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon. Additionally, other platforms that support the w3c's ActivityPub protocol can also interact with Mastodon.
ivarv··on What's the deal with all those weird wrong-number texts?
another automated scam trolling service called lenny - https://www.reddit.com/r/itslenny/ Listening to some of these makes me laugh so hard my eyes start to water. The script eventually loops and some scammers don't catch on despite being implausibly being interrupted by a flock of ducks.
ivarv··on W3C to become a public-interest non-profit organization
I wonder if this means they will reconsider their "Encrypted Media Extensions" spec. I lost all respect for the organization when that passed.

ivarv··on Low economic growth is a slow-burning crisis for Britain
The 'Queen's consent' is more of a political lever than is typically acknowledged. See https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/feb/08/queen-...
ivarv··on Guido van Rossum: Let Web3 die in a flaming ball of fire
The "it should die" camp take their view literally. At issue for many of us is the rampant consumption of resources to keep web3/cryptomining going. The ends() do not justify the means.

() for any variation of "ends" people have come up with so far.

ivarv··on Two recent studies on judging authentic vs. deepfake images
there's the deepfake visual representation that we're discussing, but what's to say there isn't work being done on the acting side of things? I think there are broad horizons to what can be automated - especially in the world of pure media.
ivarv··on Two recent studies on judging authentic vs. deepfake images
I suspect that acting itself will be reduced to algorithms. Expression of different emotions could be digitized. This could open further avenues of automation - authors could configure various different permutations (e.g. sincerity/sarcasm, surprise), the combination of expressions could be derived from context / sentiment analysis for the character, or perhaps each character could have a preset pack of opinions/values that informs their response. Given the constantly expanding capabilities of synthesis, these seem like natural areas that people will explore.

I agree that there is no need for any of this, but that's never stopped technological / artistic progress.

ivarv··on Urea prices increase 270% in 1 year
I don't know if we could get all the required nitrogen to sustain our current agricultural methods, but there are definitely people working towards normalizing the capture and reuse of the nutrients in urine. Our current practice of polluting waterways with our urine is a travesty though, and it behooves us to process our 'waste' in a more regenerative way.

ivarv··on Ask HN: What's the best book you read in 2021?
I'm looking forward to reading this. I listened to this excellent podcast with David Graber's coauthor, David Wengrow about the book and the fascinating discussion really hints that this will be a good read.

ivarv··on FirefoxPWA: Progressive Web Apps for Firefox
I totally agree with your second point, but your first won't work. If a PWA has been downloaded it can report back its status - any PWA developer would rely on their own status tracking implementation, not some unreliable flag provided by Safari.
ivarv··on What if remote work didn’t mean working from home?
An argument could be made that non-pub goers are still excluded from some kind of reward or compensation. If the buyer was spending their own personal money that might be one thing, but more often than not the funds come out of company expenses.
ivarv··on Plant-based diet would reduce agricultural land use from 4 to 1B hectares
Animal agriculture is already very heavily subsidized. Moving said subsidies from animal to plant based food production would greatly increase the cost of animal proteins, while allowing plant farming the opportunity to embrace regenerative practices.

ivarv··on Implementing the Elo Rating System (2020)
Two players of similar skill would probably get creamed by a team with a large skill disparity.

ivarv··on Funkwhale is looking for new maintainers
What do you use to download the music?
ivarv··on Mobilizon – A free, federated tool for events and groups
Where in the PNW are you located? Given the border closure it's no longer feasible to organize international meetups.
ivarv··on Studio Ghibli releases 400 free-to-use images
Thank you! I had missed that.
ivarv··on Studio Ghibli releases 400 free-to-use images
In firefox the "Save Page" doesn't save the downloaded images. I'll have to investigate the addon options..

So far on Firefox neither "Down them all!" nor "Download All Images" recognized the torrented images.

once downloaded to the browser is there an easy to dump the images to disk?
