ivanech··on Fluctuations in silver prices can predict the probability of terrorist attacks?

ivanech··on Ask HN: Looking back, what have you wasted lots of time on?
Definitely pure math. I spent a ton of time in college studying linear algebra and abstract algebra, and I remember very little of it. The issue with the advanced classes is that the time investment is enormous (1 class took more time than 4 others combined), and they're not worth doing halfway. I think if I'd stuck to computer science, I would have graduated a stronger programmer, and if I'd taken more sociology/art classes, I would have had more fun.

A lot of people talk about beauty in math, but the beauty part of it never clicked for me the way it did for art. I think there's a sterility about proofs and numbers. If you don't love pure math, you will grow to hate it.

ivanech··on MacBook Pro Keyboard Drives Me Crazy
I also enjoy the keyboard! I miss the clickiness when I use other keyboards.

I would be much happier without the touch bar, though.

ivanech··on Toptal suit against co-founder dismissed
I'm pretty sure this is 3 separate items - $2 million severance AND 2 months of pay AND $40,000. If $2 million is the equivalent of 2 months of pay, the sentence should have been structured differently.
ivanech··on Interpretable Machine Learning
Wow, this is great - I wish I'd had this book a year ago. I actually ended up making ICE plots (book chapter: https://christophm.github.io/interpretable-ml-book/ice.html) without knowing this was something people did.
ivanech··on Ask HN: Cheap places to live with a good intellectual atmosphere?
I have a software engineer friend who moved to Budapest, and she swears by it. It's a beautiful city with several universities, and it's incredibly affordable.
ivanech··on If you’re unsure whether to quit your job or break up, you probably should
if you're serious, you might want to delete this. i think it's relatively easy to tie this account to others
ivanech··on 1/0 = 0
Thanks for replying! I took a look at the thread in question and you're totally right. In context, this is unambiguously snide. I've been fortunate that my learning and working environments have been absolutely free of this kind of mean-spirited nonsense, so it really took me by surprise.
ivanech··on Show HN: Just Get Me Food
Congratulations! I'm looking forward to trying it out tomorrow
ivanech··on 1/0 = 0
I'm not seeing how the tweet is mocking the Pony developers. It seems to mirror the tone and the content of of the documentation in the screenshot. It looks like an absurdist spin on the ivory tower vs industry meme, and it doesn't make anyone the butt of the joke.
ivanech··on Utah expands public transportation with rapid bus transit, free until 2021
Very true! I should have specified that this applies for Catholics in the United States.
ivanech··on Utah expands public transportation with rapid bus transit, free until 2021
Catholics are pretty different. The Catholic Church asks for less than the LDS (and most churches) at the local level, and it's quite a bit more hands-off. The higher levels of Catholic hierarchy looks like a medieval institution because it is a medieval institution. There is definitely set dogma, and the Church does not waver on it, but Catholics are generally quite comfortable being buffet Christians (choosing which bits to follow and which to disregard). I've met many more buffet Catholics than buffet Mormons.
ivanech··on Building a Kickass Portfolio
Thanks! I went with left-right arrows because that's pretty much the standard for fine art photographers and I did scrolling on the code page because I suspect that developers would get frustrated with the lack of information density. I feel weird that the photos are the odd page out, but I struggled with finding an alternative when I made this.
ivanech··on Building a Kickass Portfolio
Wow, thanks so much for pointing this out. I spent a day or two getting things mobile-responsive, but I couldn't figure out why certain mobile browsers didn't display the site as I intended. I added a little thank you in the README: https://github.com/iechevarria/iechevarria.github.io
ivanech··on Building a Kickass Portfolio
I would appreciate any feedback: https://www.echevarria.io/. It's just basic HTML, CSS, and I think three small scripts for the whole thing.
ivanech··on Newgrad: Post a job for new grads
This is great! I was going to make literally the same thing just so it existed
ivanech··on Evolving the Firefox Brand
These logos looks really fresh right now, but I doubt they'll age gracefully. The viridis/magma tones with gradients are a dead giveaway that a logo was designed between 2015-present, and I suspect they'll look old-timey in a few years. The current moz://a branding will likely age better.
ivanech··on Sony Releases Stacked CMOS Sensor for Smartphones with 48 Effective Megapixels
The possibility of 4x more dynamic range (2 stops) is very exciting. DPReview's writeup [1] mentions the possibility that each of the subpixels could be set to different sensitivities and that each one's information could contribute to the larger pixel's output, increasing its overall dynamic range at the expense of resolution. This simple approach isn't practical with the Bayer pattern because all adjacent pixels have different color filters.

EDIT: I actually found a little explainer on quad bayer on Sony's site [2] for an industrial sensor from 2017. Instead of changing each subpixel's sensitivity, they change how long the subpixel collects light.

ivanech··on Sony Releases Stacked CMOS Sensor for Smartphones with 48 Effective Megapixels
This sensor is different. R, G, and B each have their own 2x2 blocks which are arranged into the Bayer pattern over a 4x4 block. Conversion to the full 48 MP is a step beyond Bayer demosaicing.
ivanech··on Letter from Shenzhen
Just an FYI, several of the images in the article are unreasonably large (>3000 pixels on the long side). It's really unnecessary, too - they just don't hold up to close inspection. We're talking like ~20 MB total.
ivanech··on Blloc – minimalist smartphone
Nice landing page and an intruiging concept. The Spotify glyphicon is wrong, though - it looks like a duplicate of the one for weather.
ivanech··on Tesla crash victim had complained about auto-pilot in same location
Many places with <=25mph speeds have pedestrians, and they're a lot more delicate than vehicles are. Drivers aren't the only ones at risk.
ivanech··on Canon's 120MP Camera Sensor
The fact that this captures at 9.4 fps means comparing the image to 1080p kind of makes sense, but I wish they had a comparison to a more practical still resolution between 24-50 MP.
ivanech··on Why I’m quitting GMO research
This article is good, and there's literally nothing of value I could say better than the author - which is why I really like Massive's (the site's) commenting system. I've never seen a comment system allows so few people to participate, and I wonder if this model ought to be tried elsewhere. By restricting comments to approved scientists, Massive lets us observe informed discourse without risking the mess that so many other discussion systems devolve into.
ivanech··on "Pwned Passwords" V2 With Half a Billion Passwords
I think it would be interesting to do an art project with this data - some of these passwords are funny and/or revealing. Some examples:

  pooplasagna - 3 times
  eggsarebad - 3 times
  eggsaregood - 25 times
  myhusbandcheats - 4 times
  icheatonmywife - 1 time
  ihatemyneighbors - 2 times
  iamanalcoholic - 6 times
  1yearsober - 31 times
  imissmykids - 51 times
  imissmyparents - 6 times
ivanech··on A Man Who Volunteered for Auschwitz (2012)
No problem! It looks like the places that sell the book do their damnedest to make the author look like any other historian.
ivanech··on A Man Who Volunteered for Auschwitz (2012)
The author of this book should be treated with extreme skepticism. His stated goal is to "free this world we call home from the Jewish slavery it now finds itself in for these past hundred years" by writing about the "real Holocaust" [i]. He writes about "racial reality" and "Jewish masters who want to flood Sweden with Third World trash" [ii]. His agenda is Nazi apologism and bald-faced antisemitism.

ivanech··on Uber’s Losses Widen as SoftBank Launches Bid to Buy Shares
It is - Twitter lost ~$2 billion over 10 years (http://time.com/4241716/twitter-losses-twtr/). $1.5 billion in a quarter is nuts.
ivanech··on Reddit is ready for advertisers, but are advertisers ready for Reddit?
I doubt anything on HN has ever matched the bullying of r/fatpeoplehate
ivanech··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2017)
The link for the Data Analyst position isn't working, and it doesn't look like it's listed on your site. If that's still open, I'm interested in applying!
