ivanche··on Car thieves using tech disguised inside old Nokia phones and Bluetooth speakers
A friend had an idea, I don't know if he had ever implemeted it. Take a square pillow. Stick about 100 needles in it. When leaving the car, position pillow on the driver seat so that needles' points are up, but of course all of them are still invisible / inside the pillow. Don't forget to move the pillow when you want to drive the car :)

Not the parent but it's not completely impossible. According to [0], there's about 25-30 million software developers in the world. If about 7-8% of them use ChatGPT and Copilot every day, it's already (two) millions.

ivanche··on We need to teach that owning your time is the path to wealth
That is exactly the point of such a question! Your counterpart wants you to spend time and energy to solve their problem, while concurrently you'll think the whole time you have control over situation. If your counterpart is any good, they'll gently push you towards the solution they want implemented. In the end you'll be under impression it's your solution and your relationship with the counterpart was excellent.
ivanche··on We need to teach that owning your time is the path to wealth
This! At first I felt uncomfortable saying that to people (and, more or less, all other things about which Chris wrote in his masterpiece) but oh boy it works like a charm every time.

ivanche··on Ask HN: What Git branching strategy do you use in 2023, and why?
That works if you have one commit. Otherwise it's more like git commit, git merge --no-ff master, git commit, git merge --no-ff master, git commit, git merge --no-ff master… which shows as bunch of really ugly and unnecessary merge commits from master to feature branch. In contrast, I can do 50 times git rebase and you wouldn't know.

This is just impossible. Trust me, if your baby is sick it will impact your job. If (s)he had a fight in the school and the teacher calls you in the middle of work, that working day is gone. etc. etc.

ivanche··on The 'buy now, pay later' bubble is about to burst
Moral aside of shooting mates' wedding and charging for it(!), but as soon as you use equipment to earn it's a business/side gig. You may not like it but I'm sure tax authorities of any sane country will disagree with you.

For the rest I actually agree with you and think credit system is predatory and that if one can, one should take advantage of it. Just that buying something on credit because want, and using that something to earn money are two fundamentally different cases.

ivanche··on The 'buy now, pay later' bubble is about to burst
If we are to make up scenarios, I can take $5,000, go to a casino, observe roulette wheel and bet on black when I notice bias. Bam, I now have $10,000! I am the smartest guy ever!

Seriously, OP never mentioned investing in a business equipment but wanting a camera. Also, that camera will depreciate no matter how you paid for it, but you conveniently mentioned it only in the scenario 1.

ivanche··on The 'buy now, pay later' bubble is about to burst
Fair, that could happen. It could also happen that the price decreases, as prices for electronics tend to do.
ivanche··on The 'buy now, pay later' bubble is about to burst
If you take 12 payments you, by definition, are in debt! It seems you are conflating debt with net worth - a person can have positive net worth and still have debt(s). Even if it is 0% interest you owe money to someone. Every debt is a risk. It may be smaller or larger, but it's a risk. It also normalises the behaviour of going into debt for buying depreciating objects which is bad by itself.
ivanche··on The 'buy now, pay later' bubble is about to burst
Yes, "need" is different thing. OP specifically wrote "want". Of course if it's a matter of life or death I would take credit.
ivanche··on The 'buy now, pay later' bubble is about to burst
If you can afford 12 payments with interest, you can by definition also afford to save for 12 months and then buy the camera. BNPL and credit card companies are masters of exploiting psychology and especially currently prevailing wusiness and entitlement ("But I want it now!!!1!", "I deserve to treat myself like a king").

ivanche··on Turn the radio volume down for adverts and DJs talking
Oh man, I have a story to tell here. Some years ago my favourite radio station started airing a new commercial for a car glass repair shop. Commercial started with a loud tyre screeching noise followed by a loud car honk and finally loud car crash noise. Every effing time I panicked, usually immediately put my foot off of gas pedal and probably once or twice started to brake. Idiots 100%.

> It's just a guy talking.

Maybe joe_the_user went overboard with calling it strobe light, but this is definitely not "just a guy talking". I don't know how people call this style of videos but it's very tiresome - constantly zooming in and out, full of sound effects (glass breaking, snaring, what not), changing backgrounds, changing lights, everything is just uncontrollably moving and shaking every 5-10 seconds or so.

Not ironically at all! If someone expects to attend programming classes (or any classes for that matter), not do any extra work and as a result to become a programmer, that someone will have a rude awakening. Or as one of my university professors said "Attempt to learn this subject by just listening these classes is equivalent to attemting to become a gymnast by watching Olympics on TV".

ivanche··on No, You Aren’t Going to Get Rich by Options Trading
If you think the stock will go up from $100 to $200, don't sell covered call. Nobody forces you to. But if you have sold it, it means you didn't believe stock would go that much up.

If one sells a covered call but is not ready to sell the stock at that price, that's one's problem, not "covered call is a bad strategy" problem.

ivanche··on No, You Aren’t Going to Get Rich by Options Trading
The problem with this line of thinking is assumption that the OP would hold the stock until it reaches $200. But he wouldn't. He was ready to sell at $110. He is better off selling covered call + shares @$110, then only selling shares @$110. Another problem is the assumption that everybody can sell on the top (in this case, $200), while it's obvious they can't. And since when is profit of $10 per share == a huge loss?
ivanche··on No, You Aren’t Going to Get Rich by Options Trading
Just a correction that the steamroller is $1,000,000 in this case - 250 contracts x 100 "shares" x $40.
