ivan888··on I use Nix and make(1) to develop
I'm very new to make(1), but became a fan quickly.

Rather than maintaining documentation that inevitably gets out of date, if a project has a Makefile, it self documents the build process, language independently. No need to read a README to see if people are currently using yarn or npm, or find external documentation on a build tool you haven't used before; the Makefile shows the targets and what commands they run.

ivan888··on Mac Keyboard with Hidutil
I wrote a pretty simple wrapper around this that gives the keys easy names and can store the configuration in a human readable format: https://github.com/ivangreene/keymap

Was unaware of the --matching option at the time, could be an interesting extension but I personally have no need for it

ivan888··on Show HN: We are building an open-source IDE powered by AI
My biggest concern with tools like this is reproducibility and maintainability. How deterministically can we go from the 'source' (natural language prompts) to the 'target' (source code)? Assuming we can't reasonably rebuild from source alone, how can we maintain a link between the source and target so that refactoring can occur without breaking our public interface?
ivan888··on From Books to Knowledge Graphs
Since we are now at the stage where it's difficult to distinguish well reasoned human discourse from that generated by AI, I think that deeply linked citation systems in the form of knowledge graphs will grow in importance. Otherwise it will be too easy for AI generated discourse to begin referencing itself, introducing biases and clinging to blatant falsehoods without an easy way to discover their origin and fix the problems
ivan888··on ‘Luddite’ Teens
Yes, "how can we simultaneously protect while also healthily socialize children?" is a difficult question to answer as a potential future parent. Social acceptance (to a degree) is critical to healthy development, while some of the most common uniting social tools (for previous generations, high levels of consumerism and signaling; for now and the future, near-constant technology use) are viewed by some parents as unhealthy and lead some to want to abstain entirely.
ivan888··on Wendy Carlos: The brilliant but lonely life of an electronic music pioneer
Viktor Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning" is a great read; it puts into many important words the capacity that we all possess for growth and large mindset changes, which you mention in your first paragraph
ivan888··on Ever-expanding animation of the life of the 796th floor of a space station
Rich content (anything that isn't a listicle or SEO'd fluff article) has become harder and harder to find
ivan888··on How fateful?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjKFb-4t_vg
ivan888··on Where did the long tail go?
Madjestic Kasual (not to be confused with the much more popular channel which this is a parody of) is a really interesting YouTube channel that does just that; the curator seems to spend a lot of time seeking out independent music of a particular aesthetic and sharing it and has mustered at least some audience. I'd like to collect more channels/aggregations/internet magazines like this
ivan888··on Find a good available .com domain
I have been doing the same thing for years, and just last week I finally executed a personal project I had been thinking about for months, and I just used the free subdomain that came with the hosting provider I used. Also, https://freedns.afraid.org/ is a great source for interesting names
ivan888··on Please stop disabling zoom
Can we edit the title to be "Please, stop disabling zoom" so that it doesn't look like this is about the Zoom product
ivan888··on Google almost convinced me to spend $400 on useless laser treatments
> How often has Google responded to your medical question with putrid, SEO-optimized landfill? Google has found 29,100,000 results for my query, but it's like an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet that serves nothing but reconstituted eggs and Yoplait. You know there’s a gourmet, peer-reviewed omelet station around here somewhere, but you won't find it by wandering around the main rotunda of Google's sad smorgasbord.

This expresses a lot of my feelings with the modern web experience really well. I feel like I'm constantly in "avoid" mode and it's becoming more and more difficult to get to content of actual substance and you are constantly being bombarded by garbage that is becoming more and more AI generated, making the volume higher and quality/relevancy even worse.

ivan888··on Lead exposure in last century shrunk IQ scores of half of Americans: study
I imagine frequency and budget of renovations in older housing influences the degree of lead exposure from paint. Poorer neighborhoods may have housing units with largely original (or old enough to contain lead) paint, whereas richer neighborhoods would have a larger proportion of high quality renovations which would eliminate some of the lead paint
ivan888··on Sperm DNA methylation epimutation biomarker for paternal offspring autism
> whatever behaviours you associate with Autism Spectrum Disorder don't lead to any harm in their lives

It doesn't appear that the op made this claim.

I think I understand your perspective. I think there are some ASD associated traits which may result in sort of a tradeoff for some STEM workers. E.g someone who has a difficulty forming interpersonal relationships (negative) may thus have more free time to pursue academics and outperform their more social peers (positive). This seems more like what the op was talking about being able to observe.

ivan888··on Zero downtime Postgres migration, done right
I didn't read this article, but I really hate the tag line "done right". It expresses such a poor sense of humility, which is one of, or perhaps the most, important traits in the world of software
ivan888··on MoviePass settles FTC allegations that they limited usage, exposed user data
Not sure, but I would be happy if this case was brought even if users were still able to reset their passwords to access the service. This would mean that the FTC takes dark patterns that attempt to prevent a customer's rightful use of a service seriously.

If MoviePass had concerns about losing money on customers who had not violated any terms, the right thing to do would be to re-evaluate their plans/pricing.

ivan888··on Replit used legal threats to kill my open-source project
To be fair, you can see that the README of the jq-console project that was mentioned in this article had a reference to what seems to be the predecessor of repl.it months prior to the publication of this article: https://github.com/replit-archive/jq-console/blame/7c0b9ffa8...

However... the irony is still hilarious, and this in no way excuses Amjad's emails

ivan888··on Why we should end the data economy
We need something like the Nutrition Facts label for digital consent: government mandated, consistent format, easy to scan. Even better if it was an interactive form to allow you to selectively consent to specific options
ivan888··on YouTube-dl can no longer download age-restricted videos
In my dream world where I have the energy (and time) to devote to writing software outside of work I would love to build something that satisfies this need. p2p creative content sharing which is user friendly so people can just run it and start sharing their work while also helping to distribute the work of others
ivan888··on JsonLogic
Probably the biggest benefit of using something like JSON is the fact that you can safely and easily generate dynamic code without having to worry about different quirks of the particular grammar
ivan888··on Complexities of e-mail validation logic
I don’t even have anything weird going on with mine other than using my own domain with a less common 2 letter country code TLD, but it gets me rejected from signing up to at least a few services per year
ivan888··on Rust Weird Expressions
Languages like this: fun to author the grammar, and have the entire thing in your head. So expressive! Difficult for anyone else (including yourself in 2 years) to understand
ivan888··on EFF sues Proctorio on behalf of student falsely DMCA'd
Yeah it's a tricky area. In multiple cases I have been tempted to badmouth someone or a company in an interview type context, but have almost always been glad that I avoided it and just found a more subdued (but still honest) way to express my feelings.
ivan888··on Auth0 Has been down for almost 4 hours now
This is a really interesting point that I hadn't considered before.

It's similar to ubiquitous next day delivery conditioning people to find anything longer unacceptable, when cheap next day is quite new and not even the norm yet.

ivan888··on Black Girls Code
The answer to "why does this need to involve race?" and many similar questions can be found on the about page [0]. It does a very good job of succinctly describing why we need campaigns and organizations like this to break down the racial, gender, and cultural barriers that prevent so many people from feeling comfortable or accepted in STEM careers or academic settings.

ivan888··on How People Get Rich Now
Is "hide in the sun" an idiom I'm unfamiliar with? Genuinely curious about what this means
ivan888··on Show HN: My personal website is a shell
Also consider auto focusing the field when the page loads
ivan888··on 'Fake' Amazon workers defend company on Twitter
> how would you respond if people said you were treating your employees unfairly?

Hopefully anyone with that level of wealth would look into fixing the actual problem instead of trying to cover it up with fake testimony. The point is, he has the money to build a working culture where people can feel like they are treated fairly, he just chooses not to

ivan888··on The Deno Company
I would argue that NPM and other centralized package managers have the ability to add security: if npm made 2FA a requirement (or publicized the status of a package maintainer having 2FA enabled like GitHub does, which is perhaps a security concern itself), there would be some assurance that a maintainer is not compromised.

If we are using URL-based imports, the scope of security assurances are much broader: an SSL certificate doesn't say anything about whether the current owner of a domain was the owner at the time of a dependency being safe. There is no one authority who we can expect to take swift (or even slow) action to remove malicious packages from being available on the myriad hosting protocols that are accessible through an environment like Deno

ivan888··on The Deno Company
Code examples abound on Stack Overflow, GitHub Gist, blog posts, etc. These may contain direct URL dependencies.

Example guiding users to include a Maven dependency: https://www.baeldung.com/guava-mapmaker#map-maker

There is some degree of assurance that this dependency won't last long in the Maven central repo, or any other user configured repository, if it contained malicious code. Obviously it is not foolproof and incidents happen, but without a centralized authority for package management, there is much less assurance that a package is not malicious
