itvision··on Cloudflare Quick Tunnels
The RAM pricing crisis is doing wonders to the software industry. Amazing.
itvision··on Two parallel neural ectoderm progenitors contribute to the developing brain
What a way to oversell the discovery.

The reality is:

    * Different brain regions have different functions: ancient knowledge.
    * Different regions contain distinct cell types and molecular programs: also well established.
    * Anterior and posterior brain structures may trace back to fundamentally separate progenitor lineages that were independently specified very early in evolution and development: that's the interesting new result.
The headline should have been: "Human forebrain and hindbrain arise from distinct embryonic progenitor lineages" - not that we have "two organs" in the brain.
itvision··on TypeSafe AI debuts model for machines that plays Doom
https://typesafe.ai/

193.6x Faster, 444.6x Cheaper (than Claude Fable 5.1?)

No idea how it measures against frontier LLMs.

itvision··on On the Navier–Stokes Millennium Prize Problem
There's something sinister or crazy good in the article.

OpenAI already has a model that is at the very least twice as smart as Astra.

Oh god.

itvision··on GLM-5.3-Flash
Does it work with NoScript?
itvision··on GLM-5.3-Flash
Anthropic has banned me for using Claude via a VPN.

They don't even allow me to download my data.

How is it better?

itvision··on Single log line is 49KB+ (ext4) / 110KB+ (btrfs) of systemd-journald disk writes
Nice in theory in practice you always retain them locally as well, just in case the network connection goes down.

If network egress fails and logs are pushed in real time over a connection with no local backing, you face an ugly tradeoff: either drop log data silently (loss of visibility during the very network partition you need to debug) or apply backpressure to services (potentially hanging applications when logging buffers saturate).

Good for your personal devices, very not good for servers where you need to have any sort of accountability and security trail.
itvision··on AMD acquires Taalas to boost inference performance by etching models in silicon
OMFG this thing is fast.
itvision··on Future euro banknote design proposals
A truly horrible design, lacking any finesse or style.
itvision··on GitHub's 2FA is to become mandatory on September 2, 2026
I'm not part of any orgs on Github.
itvision··on GPT-5.6
Weirdly, normally new ChatGPT releases are head and shoulders above anything else, but according to OpenAI's own evaluation, Anthropic's Mythos outperforms ChatGPT in quite a few benchmarks: https://openai.com/index/gpt-5-6/.

ChatGPT 6 must be deep in the pipeline and will be released within the next few months. Maybe that's why this release is versioned 5.6, not 6.0.

itvision··on Why Linux is not ready for the desktop (2024)
> The reason I run the app on linux is because i want control over my computer.

The article is not about "control" but usability and applicability to the average Joe.

> You will never get that with Microsoft and Apple.

And 99.99% people don't need that. What they need is being able to run their favorite applications - the reason why Linux sucks.

> The fact that everything I want works well and the UI/UX is decades ahead is just a bonus.

Anecdotal evidence and IMO. Nothing new.

itvision··on Why Linux is not ready for the desktop (2024)
I authored the entire piece without using AI.

The article has been maintained since 2009 actually.

What AI could write it 17 years ago? Please enlighten me.

What's "bad takes"?

itvision··on Why Linux is not ready for the desktop (2024)
What's "parody" in there?

This article is well researched and I can vouch for every sentence in there.

itvision··on Why Linux is not ready for the desktop (2024)
What's "absolute nonsense" in that? The author here.

Been running Linux exclusively for close to three decades now.

> I have plenty of 3rd party applications that weren't provided as part of my distro, didn't require recompiling, and have worked fine over generations of Linux.

Ah, exceptions once again. So dear to the heart of a Linux fan.

> I've also had Android games purchased as part of a Humble Bundle that now don't run on modern Android, so the logic is completely backwards.

How is this relevant at all?

> I didn't get much further than the second paragraph before I just walked away. It was painful reading.

I thought so. "Didn't read but object"

itvision··on Anthropic says Alibaba illicitly extracted Claude AI model capabilities
Seeking a monopoly on its business. And it's not just the Chinese, its their US competitors as well.

Sorry, Anthropic, but AGI must belong to all of humanity, not just to you.

itvision··on CSSQuake
Runs perfectly fine at over 60fps on my Intel Core 358H at roughly 2560x1600.

Perhaps there's something wrong with your web browser. Try Firefox - it works beautifully there.

Scientific Estimate: 36,250. Nah, I'm far worse.

Probably not too bad for a person whose native language is not English.

itvision··on The intracies of modern camera lens repair (2024)
How did the intricacies become "intracies"? ;-) That's the question.
itvision··on Stop Killing Games
I love it but how do people tolerate the Steam launcher? Why is it a requirement to launch ages old games that lost support aens ago and do not even support Windows 10/11 and the best way to launch them is under emulation or virtualization, e.g. in Windows XP, but modern Steam is not compatible with XP, so ... you're screwed?

Valve could have made `steam.dll` optional for really old games but DRM is DRM and it's here to stay.

itvision··on The AV2 Video Standard Has Released (Final v1.0 Specification)
Codecs are final (the only exception being H.265 with a couple of later additions/extensions that required new codec IP and were not that widely deployed or supported). They are not software. You cannot have upgrades for fixed function HW decoders (which is a must for pretty much any established codec and AV2 will be also one of them).
itvision··on .de TLD offline due to DNSSEC?

itvision··on ChatGPT Images 2.0
I will remember that AI removes repetitive, tedious work and frees actual creators to achieve things that have never been done before.

Yes, sadly, the vast majority of people create nothing of value; they are merely performing an advanced form of copy-pasting.

That certainly includes me. Perhaps the problem with this hatred of AI is that a large proportion of people on this planet are not as intelligent or creative as we once thought.

Their work will be almost entirely automated.

wlroots is a library for a complete display server + window manager.

It does not separate the two.
