itslennysfault··on Xkcd 1425 (Tasks) turns ten years old today
I did this tutorial series to try to get some context/foundation in deep learning, and the first lesson was building the bird thing from this comic. It was really easy and fun. The whole course is great. Highly recommend for anyone who has a programming background and wants to get a solid intro to deep learning.

itslennysfault··on Winamp Legacy player source code
Thanks for sharing. Wonder if they've ever heard of color contrast. Dark blue on dark blue is not very readable. Had to highlight the article to read it.
itslennysfault··on Show HN: Konty – A Balsamiq-alternative lo-fi wireframe tool for modern apps
It's weird everything after the slash seems to be ignored. You can type anything and it still goes to the home page. funky.
itslennysfault··on Is My Blue Your Blue?
Is there a reason this code is so complex? For example, the code where it picks the next color uses this sigmoid function ( https://github.com/patrickmineault/ismyblue/blob/main/src/ut... ) to increment the hue.

Is there a specific reason you didn't just have a list of a dozen or so colors and shuffle the array when the app starts? Just curious about the reasoning behind this and the value it provides.

itslennysfault··on Things my girlfriend and I have argued about
I don't usually cut them. Just peel them with a spoon (or potato peeler) and bite into it like an apple or cut it into slices ...but agreed, never lengthwise slices.

itslennysfault··on Show HN: If YouTube had actual channels
This Netflix feature drives me crazy. Now I always mute my TV when browsing Netflix because as you highlight items they play and it is super annoying.
itslennysfault··on Hackers may have leaked the Social Security Numbers of every American
Mine has been leaked so many times at this point that I'll openly share it with anyone that wants it. Anyone here want my SSN? Just DM me. <3
itslennysfault··on Startups building balloons to hoist tourists
That price seems crazy to me. It's "just a balloon" I don't see what their hard costs are that make this more than the cost of a commercial flight.

I'm glad there are multiple players in this space so they can compete and drive the cost down over time.

itslennysfault··on Show HN: I created an After Effects alternative
What's that little blue bird icon in the top right corner? Seems to go to X, but I'm not sure why.

...jk!

On a serious note, this is REALLY cool. Great job.

Tiny feedback, your console is extremely chatty. I get this is a beta, but it still might be worth disabling that logging for production deploys.

I hope to see this evolve into a commercial product I really think it fills a need and it seems to work incredibly well.

itslennysfault··on Show HN: From dotenv to dotenvx – better config management
Yeah, this is a really weird post for me. Before dotenv existed I used Foreman. It worked basically exactly how "dotenvx cross-platform" works (as a global command line). I switched to node-foreman because I largely switched to working on node projects and didn't want devs to need to have ruby installed. Then, at some point I switched to dotenv, and I don't even remember why.
itslennysfault··on AdonisJS
NestJS is my go to and the reason why I haven't touched Sails in years, but it is more "Angular for the backend" than "Rails for JavaScript" imo.

but I probably should've mentioned it anyway since it has been my node backend framework of choice for quite a while.

I'm kinda with you on that though. I'm actually currently prototyping new services in DotNet Core and am really enjoying it so far.

itslennysfault··on AdonisJS
I haven't used either so I can't chime in on that front, but long ago I was pretty into Sails which is written by a team that loves rails, but switched to NodeJS so it's basically Node on Rails. I actually thought they discontinued it, but I just searched and it still exists. It was a solid framework like 5 years ago when I used it last so I assume it's quite mature now.

Seems like "peak oil" is happening, but not at all like we originally thought.
itslennysfault··on Super Heavy has splashed down in The Gulf of Mexico
After a TON of trial and error I made it to orbit. I decided that was "beating the game" for me and never played it again. Ain't nobody got time for a moon mission.
itslennysfault··on L(O*62).ONG: Make your URL longer
First of all, short URLs is kinda overdone / common. There are infinite URL shortening services.

Secondly, this is maybe the last service I'd recommend people use. First time I opened it all of the images failed to load and no CSS. Then, I refreshed it with the console open and there were 40+ errors and 500+ warnings in the console, but everything loaded... including 2 pop-up ads stacked on top of each other and a ton of banner ads. Feels like I should wash my laptop with soap and water after opening that URL.

itslennysfault··on Magic UI: UI Library for Design Engineers
I'm assuming this is platform specific. It's totally smooth for me on a M1 MacBook Pro. Thats with a bunch of tabs open while on a zoom call (gotta do something to pass the time during standup). I find it annoying for other reasons, but I'm not seeing any perf issues on the page.

edit... reading through the other comments I see LOTS of people are having this issue. Not sure why I'm the lucky one, but I went back and clicked through all the pages, still no perceivable lag at all.

itslennysfault··on One-third of Amazon warehouse workers are on food stamps or Medicaid
The point is that they pay such low wages that their workers are still eligible for welfare when working there (despite being hugely profitable). This essentially means that tax dollars are subsidizing their profits.
itslennysfault··on Gifski: Optimized GIF Encoder
After clicking your link I had instant nostalgia. I used this tool years ago and completely forgot about it. I went to download it, but it appears to be windows only which explains why I stopped using it as I haven't used windows in about a decade.

That said, I'd highly recommend Giphy Capture for recording gifs on mac. It has a very sleek/light UI.

itslennysfault··on Researchers find high levels of lead, mercury and arsenic in Beethoven's hair
I've noticed that errors seem to increase the longer the chat goes. I think having too much previous context confuses it. I seem to have much better luck if I occasionally start a new chat.
itslennysfault··on Researchers find high levels of lead, mercury and arsenic in Beethoven's hair
I asked it yesterday if there were any baseball games in town this weekend. It hallucinated a false schedule against the wrong team complete with times, and even linked to the (correct) schedule. I told it I googled it and they're playing a different team this weekend and it then (without searching the web again) apologized and shared the correct schedule.

It seemed like such a simple question, but it just made up a very plausible, but entirely incorrect answer. I asked it several times in different ways why and how I could tell if it is correct and all it could tell me was to look it up myself and cross-reference which enitrely defeats the purpose of using it.

itslennysfault··on AI-generated spam is starting to fill social media. Here's why
Probably just to sell the account. There is a market for social media accounts that already have 1000s of followers.
itslennysfault··on Squarespace to Go Private in $6.9B All-Cash Transaction with Permira
The problem with an email server being down is the email goes nowhere. So, the client sends you an email and you just never receive it. Often you don't even know you missed something. It's far from ideal.

To answer your question, no I've never corresponded with a client via WhatsApp

itslennysfault··on Squarespace to Go Private in $6.9B All-Cash Transaction with Permira
I don't remember the specifics, but it was catastrophic failures. Like I couldn't receive any emails, and because of the nature of email that means you just don't receive them at all ever.
itslennysfault··on The USDA's gardening zones shifted, this map shows you what's changed
...but this page is part of the 0.1% (by your math) that actually wants what it asked for. So, this is just a case of user error. Enter what it asked for and it works great.
itslennysfault··on Squarespace to Go Private in $6.9B All-Cash Transaction with Permira
I did this for about a decade (ending about a decade ago), and eventually gave up and went to gmail. I agree that it is a really easy thing to do and maintain, BUT when it did (rarely) break it was always at the worst possible time. The day a client was sending an important document. While I was on vacation. Etc. I probably only had to drop everything to fix my email server a handful of times, but that handful of times was painful enough to make me just let google worry about it.

itslennysfault··on Development Notes from xkcd's "Machine"
Oh, gotcha... I submitted a few, but thought the event had ended and the overall machine was finalized. It would've been nice to have a messaging explaining that the machine will be reviewed and maybe a way to check back if it got added.

Also, this is super fun, and I'm sad I didn't learn about it when it was still live. It'd be really really cool if people could still permalink individual machines created. I know that might be an issue for storage. Maaaaaybe just base64 encode the JSON into a URL param??? Please?? I'd love to create weird maps and share them with people.
