itcrowd··on Getting Users Is Hard
Cool initiative. Is it maybe that given the pandemic, many people are more wary of meeting in the first place? Your struggle might partially be explained by that?
itcrowd··on I made a mechanical keyboard with 3D-printed switches
Use Ctrl+y instead ;)
itcrowd··on Some Fundamental Theorems in Mathematics (2019) [pdf]
Do you remember where you read it? It's a nice and funny formulation but a quick attempt at googling didn't bring this up for me.
itcrowd··on The Eastland disaster killed more passengers than the Titanic and the Lusitania
The SS prefix "controversy" is a funny read on the talk page! Thanks.
itcrowd··on Public asked to report receipt of any unsolicited packages of seeds
That was in the 1930s.. quite a stretch to project that failure to modern times.
itcrowd··on Show HN: 3D Book Image CSS Generator
Cool, very nicely done.

Would it be possible to add a different set of parameters that describe the physical book instead? What I mean is specifying the page size in some standard way (e.g. A3 or letter size) and the number of pages and let the algorithm decide the parameters of book thickness (in pixels) automatically.

itcrowd··on Dutch national broadcaster saw ad revenue rise when it stopped tracking users
The price list is indeed for a 30-second television ad. However, it seems like you can't just buy one slot, you need to spend >€30k before they start to do business with you.

itcrowd··on Carving out a niche as a small artist on Spotify
Spotify does allow you to store your songs locally on your smartphone. Although you are of course locked into their ecosystem.

For me it works, for others it may not be adequate.

itcrowd··on Book Review: Raise a Genius (2017)
I enjoy some of Alexander's writing but I really hope he would consider making a proper mobile view of his website.

At least the reader view in Firefox fixes it.

itcrowd··on Lessons from Operation “Denver,” the KGB’s Aids Disinformation Campaign
To save others like me the trip to wikipedia, here's a snippet of wikipedia that explains what saagarjha is alluding to:

[Diaereses are] now far less commonly used in words such as coöperate and reënter except in a very few publications—notably The New Yorker [..]

itcrowd··on Firefox extensions to make remote work and school a little better
uBlock Origin needs to be on the list. It doesn't make remote work or school better, specifically, but it makes the whole web great (again).
itcrowd··on 6ft Is Not Always Enough: How Saliva Droplets Spread Through the Air
Agreed. Also, if respirators don't work, how come there isn't a mass infection among doctors treating COVID-19 patients worldwide?
itcrowd··on Corkscrew light promises higher optical-communication data rates
Indeed, you are correct. Spectral efficiency is, essentially, how "well" those 5 kHz are being used. It doesn't have anything to do with the center frequency (500 kHz in this example).
itcrowd··on Fortran Standard Library
What library or framework do you use to interface between the web service and Fortran?
itcrowd··on Ask HN: Mind bending books to read and never be the same as before?
I agree. However, this pandemic has proven that JIT leads to outages when part of the supply chain is suddenly disrupted by external forces. On the other hand, what production system wouldn't have been hit (as hard?) by the corona virus? Interesting!
itcrowd··on Yes, websites are starting to look more similar
Also @humansofflat on twitter. Although the tweets are now protected, so I don't know what the current status of the account is.

Interested, but won't subscribe without listening to at least one episode to get an idea of the content, quality etc. Is there a way to listen to the first (few) episodes as a trial?

itcrowd··on Cliqz is shutting down
> Some of the back-burner [marketing] ideas were: Changing the Cliqz name, turning the browser colors to pick for Valentine’s day, advertising on porn websites (okay, that one made it).

This must be a joke, right? Who the heck installs a browser (extension) that advertises on a porn website? Changing the Cliqz name would have been WAY better. Cliqz sounds super shady and I would never have guessed it was a search engine.

To me this product sounds like one of those toolbars in web browsers years ago.

itcrowd··on Al Alcorn, creator of Pong, explains the NTSC color graphics trick
> So, 10X.

No, that's not how inflation works.

itcrowd··on Al Alcorn, creator of Pong, explains the NTSC color graphics trick
At $600 per year (1978 dollars, two semesters), inflation correction puts it at about $2400 per year in 2020 dollars. That's on the high end of what domestic students pay in Europe today for a full-time bachelor or master degree program (per academic year).
itcrowd··on Show HN: Moanalytics.com – Analytics management for your team
Maybe consider moranalytics (although it may have "moron" associations) or "molytics" (tagline: mo' lytics, mo' problems).
itcrowd··on German government to bail Lufthansa out of bankruptcy with nearly $10B state aid
Can't edit above post anymore, here's a small update.

The Suddeutsche Zeitung has a similar story to FAZ where there have been negotiations between gov and Lufthansa, but that the two parties are far apart and negotiations are not close to an end. Timeframe for finalizing negotiations is said to be before the end of May. SZ seems to have some insider sources too, so now I am really in doubt about the legitimacy of the Business Insider reporting.

itcrowd··on German government to bail Lufthansa out of bankruptcy with nearly $10B state aid
Frankfurter Allgemeine reports seem to agree with your statements and also see 1-2 week timeframe for further negotiations. Strange that BI somehow has the scoop.

itcrowd··on Ask HN: What scientific phenomenon do you wish someone would explain better?
Great discussion, I agree with inopinatus who, if I am not mistaken, supports my position that the science is not quite out on this topic yet. Many explanations exist, none seem to be all-encompassing.

That being said, it doesn't answer the question posed in this forum: "What scientific phenomenon do you wish someone would explain better?"

Instead, it answers the question: "What scientific phenomenon do you wish someone could explain?"

itcrowd··on [dead]
The results in the "Brain Studies" section is based on a single 2011 study [1]. I just skimmed the study and the results are very underwhelming. Figure 1 shows the correlation between political attitude and size of specific parts of the brain (see image here [2]). This single figure raises so many questions: Why is the size of brain measured in "a.u." [arbitrary units]? Why not in liters or perhaps kilograms? Why are the error bars so huge? (Note also that the error bars correspond to 1 standard error, so about 68% of the distribution.) What does negative gray matter volume mean? Why were only age and gender corrected for? Edit to add: With these error bars, you can practically draw any line through them.

To be fair, the title of the paper is accurate, but giving this paper into its entire section on Wikipedia really overstates the significance of the results.
