itbeho··on Ask HN: If you quit your computer job, which non-computer craft would you pick
I'd probably get a job as a welder after spending some time at a local community college getting certification. It's a highly paid skill, in demand in most areas and you don't have to go in to debt to become educated in the field.
itbeho··on From Go on EC2 to Fly.io
I'd spend some time reading community.fly.io before committing to it. I recently helped a startup that has been on fly.io and there was a lot of frustration about things not working.

it was very frustrating to see un-answered problems reported, fly.io down for what seemed to be many users, the same time seeing a fly.io co-founder arguing about politics all day long here on HN...

itbeho··on My daughter's school took over my personal Microsoft account
Question from a non-Windows user: In this situation would the school admin have access to the author's personal data?
itbeho··on Thoughts on getting laid off after nine years at Twilio
I follow a similar pattern. A current employer almost never raises salary commensurate with market rates after 2 or more years.
itbeho··on How Twitter moderated the Covid debate
Many people felt they couldn't even question the pharma/big gov narrative without being branded "internet weirdos and agitators" or anti-vax.
itbeho··on Ruby 3.2.0

itbeho··on FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried to be released on $250M bail
It is grossly unfair to the poor and the not-so-poor. It's a two-tiered justice system where the politically connected have different rules applied to them than the rest of us.
itbeho··on Twitter applies 7-day suspension to half a dozen journalists
I don't like seeing anyone banned by any social media company. This is a fail by Elon considering his previous absolutist stance. I'd rather shine the light on both stupid and brilliant and let people decide on their own what they'd like to consume in terms of information and entertainment.

The VC Elite should raise a fund, hire former Twitter employees, and mount a competitive alternative. They could "Build a better Twitter". Call it "Bitter" if you will... <smirk>

itbeho··on Twitter has re-suspended ElonJet account
A thought experiment would be to wonder if the same people that think it's ok to share "public" knowledge of the location of Elon's jet would agree to the same for Hillary Clinton, Obama, Newsom or Fauci.

I'm genuinely curious how uniformly these beliefs are held, or if it's just a determination that Musk ain't in the club any longer and is considered fair game.

itbeho··on Is wine fake?
I work at a small intersection between wine and tech. Wine is not fake, but from a marketplace view can be considered as the progenitor of much of what we see today in tech. Before Silicon Valley, before Crypto, before Semiconductors... there was wine. And pretty much all of the same hype-machine rules have applied. You see wine that almost anyone would like get no traction whatsoever, and marginal swill marketed with lots of money and by influencers winning awards and notoriety.
itbeho··on Twitter is planning to start charging $20 per month for verification
My first take was to agree with you. But after a bit of thought I'm not so sure. I've been talking to friends and neighbors, and there is a lot of anger building of late about [inflation, crime, government handling of Covid, media aligned with government] that makes me think more people will be supporting alternate voices because the entrenched power is so disliked. Like literally any alternate voice will stand out, even with stumbles and flaws.
itbeho··on Nearly Half of San Franciscans Have Been Victims of Theft, New Poll Says
"A conservative is a liberal who’s been mugged." - Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D)
itbeho··on Nearly Half of San Franciscans Have Been Victims of Theft, New Poll Says
Move to SF and report back in a year?
itbeho··on Microsoft has started layoffs today
Can you describe how she was impactful to the culture?
itbeho··on Ask HN: What's your favorite programmer niche?
Embedded systems with Elixir/Nerves. Fun to work with and the business opportunities are endless. My current startup measures the content of water in storage tanks with a realtime dashboard for vineyards.

I'm good with that too :)
itbeho··on Video shows GOP fake elector giving 'unauthorized access' to voting equipment
By your logic, Hillary Clinton is also a "danger to democracy".

itbeho··on React I love you, but you're bringing me down
Same here - we've been much more productive on the development side with LiveView than with our previous React iteration.
itbeho··on The government is burying the anti-Asian violent hate crime crisis
More people should be worried about racially motivated violence against any group of people.
itbeho··on “Tactical” Infiltrated Everyday Life
Backpacks would seldom last me a full year until I bought a Goruck GR1 backpack about 7 years ago.

It has a military influence in looks, but I've never had any comments or dirty looks in any conference/board room I've had it in. It's the best laptop bag I've ever owned. Durable, comfortable and versatile enough for non tech adventures. I've lived out of it for a week at a time when traveling.

itbeho··on Inflation is crushing rural America and may even drive people to the cities
I live in a rural area. I know NOBODY moving closer to the city. Exactly the opposite here. People are fleeing the Bay Area to my area and every single person I've met that has moved here, say it's because of crime and the high cost of living.

I read some of the other work put out by the author, Ben Abrams, as well as some of the work espoused by the expert referenced in the article, professor Dave Peters. Abrams appears to be a cookie cutter left leaning journalist that doesn't appear to have spent much time in rural America. Professor Peters is focused on "rural change".

I don't think either of these people really understand rural America and this feels like signaling rather than reporting.

itbeho··on Lin Zexu's Letter to Queen Victoria (1839)
5,502 opium, 3,946 fentanyl deaths in California for 2020, which is the most recent this dashboard presents: https://skylab.cdph.ca.gov/ODdash

For comparison: There were 3,449 gun related deaths reported in the same year: https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/sosmap/firearm_mortality/...

* edited to clarify that gun deaths were from all cause, not just homicide

itbeho··on The Democrats need to wake up and stop pandering to their extremes
Quite a few of the hispanic side of my family (Catholic) have been openly talking about having jumped ship away from the Democrats. I think there are principles involved, even if people on the left don't understand or agree with them.
itbeho··on Lin Zexu's Letter to Queen Victoria (1839)
Makes one wonder about the flood of fentanyl coming in to the US from China.
itbeho··on GoDaddy locks out derivatives of Chrome
Do not use GoDaddy. A horrible company in my opinion based upon experience.
itbeho··on My 40-liter backpack travel guide
I just checked and it's actually marked "3.4oz" :)
itbeho··on My 40-liter backpack travel guide
I keep it in a 4oz generic plastic bottle and I use it as a general detergent. A little goes a long way, it's really effective for general cleaning. If used for a stain, I just pour directly on as needed.
itbeho··on My 40-liter backpack travel guide
I once had a waiter drop a dish of spaghetti and meatballs in my lap. I was on the road without an appropriate change of clothes. A fellow minimalist traveler gave me his Dawn dish soap and it worked so well that that's all I use now when traveling.
