it··on Why many scientists are now saying climate change is an all-out 'emergency'
I'm surprised that no one here disagreeing with him seems able to muster a non-ad-hominem argument against what he's saying.
it··on Why many scientists are now saying climate change is an all-out 'emergency'
Only showing arguments on one side is bias, even if Wikipedia's editors don't like the side you're censoring.
it··on Why many scientists are now saying climate change is an all-out 'emergency'
You think it's not true? Just ask Google: https://www.google.com/search?q=how+much+has+the+global+temp.... It says "about 1.0o F" in the past 100 years, so not even as much as Epstein is saying.
it··on Versioning data in Postgres? Testing a Git like approach
This looks really promising.

Here's an alternative designed to work with an ORM, if you like that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsO551E7ySY&t=1094s.

it··on The Psychology of Cults
Final research project: start your own cult.
it··on The ‘Enshittification’ of TikTok: Or how, platforms die
It seems like the enshittification life cycle directly results from the involvement of venture funding, since it requires the infusion of capital to allow operating at a loss in the beginning, baiting users onto the platform while killing off competitors.

By contrast, the Basecamp approach of bootstrapping cannot make the initial first step of operating at a loss by definition.

it··on OpenAI’s CEO says the age of giant AI models is already over
Interesting how this contradicts "The Bitter Lesson": http://incompleteideas.net/IncIdeas/BitterLesson.html.
it··on Grand jury votes to indict Donald Trump
Oh I see. I wonder if he will be allowed to settle, as Hillary Clinton's team did for "intentionally obscuring their payments through Perkins Coie and failing to publicly disclose the true purpose of those payments" with the Steele Dossier. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/mar/31/hillary-clin...
it··on Grand jury votes to indict Donald Trump
Oh, this is interesting. By the same reasoning, would a grand jury indict companies who pay former employees they fired not to speak ill of them?
it··on Show HN: Customizable, embeddable Chat GPT based on your own documents
The "Ask Libraria" text field doesn't let me type anything. I tried it with Chrome and Safari on a Mac. Is this intentional?
it··on Typst, a new markup-based typesetting system, is now open source
I've long enjoyed quality results from LaTeX, and now I can get that with something more like the ease of markdown. Thank you!
it··on Improved audio rendering with an optimised version of memcpy (2013)
I had no idea memcpy was lossy. Astonished.
it··on I love building a startup in Rust but wouldn't pick it again
You can also get match in any variant of Erlang or ML, and those don't force you to jump through hoops for borrow checking.
it··on The Heart of ChatGPT's Darkness
What would be involved in retraining a GPT to not have guardrails if you have the parameters? Seems like you could feed it input you care about and have it generate lots of training data to prevent botching what's already there.
it··on Ask HN: Is TypeScript worth it?
Depending on your project, you may find that Dart+Flutter is a suitable alternative. The Dart syntax is simpler than Typescript, while meeting similar goals.
it··on My IDE is too heavy so I moved to Emacs
Kiss your productivity goodbye. Emacs has lots of half-baked features that you'll be tempted to fix with its LISP dialect. It's so much fun to tinker that you'll wonder where your day went.

The $20 I spend every month on my JetBrains subscription is easily worth it. I can depend on my IDE to be working well and not waste time on fixing buggy features. The JetBrains people are also highly responsive to bug reports.

it··on Ask HN: Would You Work for Elon?
Maybe so, but I still don't see the gaslighting.
it··on KDE beats macOS
I tried using Linux for my laptop at Google but it was a torment due mainly to the wonkiness of the trackpad driver. I've been happily using Macs ever since. Linux is for servers.
it··on Ask HN: Would You Work for Elon?
How did he gaslight them? I'm scrolling through his tweets and not finding any gaslighting, but maybe I didn't scroll far enough.
it··on Pioneering economist says our obsession with growth must end
There's a whole universe out there. We're not even close to exhausting how much we could grow.
it··on Faecal transplants reverse hallmarks of ageing
My dog loves eating the faeces of other animals, including those of my cats. I suspect the reason is to boost his gut flora and keep him healthy for longer than he otherwise would be.
it··on Mathematical Foundations of Monte Carlo Methods
Here's an alternative for Bayesians: http://georglsm.r-forge.r-project.org/site-projects/pdf/7113...
it··on TurboTax’s fight against free tax filing
This year I had my taxes done by a CPA rather than by TurboTax as I had in previous years, and I'm so glad I did. There was no deceptive upselling. I never got confused and had to go hunting around on the internet for the meaning of some obscure question. I got to keep more of my money than I expected, and I plan to do the same thing again next year.
it··on Little White Lies
For some reason I tend not to trust people who advocate lying.
it··on Your computer is a distributed system
The Erlang VM (BEAM) can be viewed as a distributed operating system, or at least the beginnings of one.
it··on Putin’s Worsening Problems
Would you care to name a specific lie and explain how you know it's a lie?
it··on Please make a dumb car
The things I dislike about my car are all fancy "smart" features. A keyed ignition would have been fine, but they replaced it with a push button. I can stay in my lane just fine, but every time I turn on the car it turns on lane assist and I have to do a button sequence to turn it off.
it··on I made my first web0 website today. It's so cool it just works
Typically it means adding another file.
it··on uBlacklist: Blocks specific sites from appearing in Google search results
I have wanted this for such a long time. Thank you.
it··on We killed our end-to-end test suite
If your system can't be tested end-to-end because of how slow and flaky it is to test that way, doesn't that say something about the quality of your system rather than the tests?

Of course once you have such a system, it's probably the result of years of work by many people and most likely it would be hard to make it faster and more reliable. That is probably why people shy away from doing that, and choose to blame the tests instead.
