iszomer··on NFT misconception: JPEG aren't stored on the Blockchain
And the kicker is, the record of your "wash trades" is now stored on an immutable blockchain, a stark contrast to actual paper trails.
iszomer··on What is ‘right-clicker mentality’?
> 1. DRM realistically wasn't an issue due to pirates (remember naptster?)

IIRC, it did have a couple consequences like Apple embedding PII into music files..

https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2007/06/should-apple-embed-you...

..or going even further back, the arrest of a hacker at a Defcon convention who broke the DRM from eBooks.

https://yro.slashdot.org/story/01/07/17/130226/fallout-from-...

I can't specifically recall but I think there was a time a Stanford (?) researcher published a paper on SDMI (?) watermarks in music files as well.

iszomer··on Discord Is Integrating Ethereum
Concerns with KYC, privacy, centralization? /shrug
iszomer··on Ask HN: What was it like to use BBS?
Don't forget ascii and ansipr0n.
iszomer··on Apple’s New Screen Repair Trap
Could this be argued as Apple simply further "securing their supply chain" or locking out substitutions of aftermarket parts?
iszomer··on Ask HN: What's your ideal city in a 100% remote world?
Antarctica, Amundsen/South Pole station, as a life test on mobility of productivity. Otherwise, back to Taiwan in the mountains.

iszomer··on Podcasts are my new Wikipedia
I do it while listening to a podcast.
iszomer··on Podcasts are my new Wikipedia
Mind maps help. White boards are even better. In my early college years, I used my bedroom's closet mirror like a starving artist would.
iszomer··on If Silence Is the Cost of Great Ramen, So Be It
What I don't understand is why The Atlantic is compelled to write up this piece of how to eat ramen from a Western perspective. Shouldn't this specific mandate be more applicable to those eating at a teppanyaki or hot pot restaurant instead?

Eating ramen is highly individualized and tends to not include miscellaneous side dishes.

iszomer··on Google introduces mandatory 2-Step Verification for Google Accounts
Especially some banks that still use SMS as your 2FA.
iszomer··on Effect of early treatment with fluvoxamine on risk of hospitalization for Covid
The legitimacy process of peer review may also be called into question in reference to the recent joint works done by James Lindsay, Peter Boghossian, and Helen Pluckrose. And they aren't even "right-wing" though the mainstream portrays them to be.
iszomer··on First Impressions with the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W
Isn't this more of question on redundancy, ie: "two is one and one is none"? RPi's aren't technically best known for general purpose usage.
iszomer··on Meta: A Social Technology Company
It's only fitting to now call it The Meta Data company.
iszomer··on Deadly infection linked to contaminated room spray sold at Walmart
It can also be a culturally-adopted thing. From the 90's til now, wearing a mask was normalized to be necessary while navigating through cities like Taipei with dense smog and particulate matter. There's a reason why it's some times referred to as the moped capital of the world.

I guess when word got out that there was a potential spread of infection, Asians had no problem adapting mask wearing on other forms of mass transportation as well.

iszomer··on Bitcoin is largely controlled by a small group of investors and miners
I guess depending on how people define it, Bitcoin would originally be the hedge against the traditional banking and monetary policy just as Ethereum would be considered a hedge against Bitcoin. Other major blockchain platforms like the upcoming Polkadot and Cardano would be hedges against Ethereum and Bitcoin -had it not been for- (hope I'm articulating this right) the philosophical rift of their founding members seeking to improve on their network without causing hard forks which coincidentally happened, both times.

Don't forget the CCP lock down of local Wuhan travel with the exception of international flights. IIRC, early indicators of a possible outbreak existed long before the mass media picked up on the frenzy.

My parents who live in Taiwan were talking about it just as they were coming home from visiting me in the states around November 2019 and they were so concerned that they advanced me a box of medical grade masks by mid January, due to having lived through the hysteria with SARS-COV-1 in 2003.

No one took COVID19 seriously here while I commuted for work in NYC via MTA. At most, bottles of hand sanitizers did start appearing in the office late January but no one wore masks until the announcement for the "15 days to slow the spread" campaign.

iszomer··on Gunship “Tech Noir” Breakdown
Perturbator is especially good at bridging synthwave with [0] industrial. I used to listen to a lot of Antigen Shift, Muted Logic, Cenotype, Formalkaline and Scrap.edx prior discovering this subgenre. I suppose being influenced by the frequent DNA Lounge attendance mostly contributed to this lean.

Dance with the Dead [1] also does this particular well along with Turbo Knight [2][3].

iszomer··on Jack Dorsey says ‘hyperinflation’ will happen soon in the U.S. and the world
CNBC reporting, of all places..
iszomer··on ProjectM – The most advanced open-source music visualizer
ProjectM integrates well with PowerAmp on Android too. QNMP (Linux) also supports it but is not as intuitive to configure.
iszomer··on RSS is wonderful
Used to be able to alphabetically sort your subscription but they removed that feature over whatever subscription is the most active. It is bizarre as hell.
iszomer··on Ask HN: Best way to host a website for 500 years?
What's potentially amusing is how GitHub might handle code revisions if they were possibly stored on a WORM medium. Several past companies[1] have attempted to engineer storage that might outlast us all and even Elon Musk snuck in one such repository[2] when he launched his Tesla Roadster into space.

Umm, no.

iszomer··on Was Google Earth Stolen?
> Whenever a movie says “based on a true story,” it’s likely to be fictionalizing large chunks of the story without sufficient validation, for dramatic, political, or other purposes. A lot of the theories in this TV series turn out to be bullshit.

Ironically, John Hanke went off to found Niantic as a startup within Google and launched it's first augmented reality game called Ingress on this fictionalized premise.

iszomer··on US throws out millions of doses of Covid vaccine as world goes wanting
I think it's better to view both independent left and ring wing media sources for balance and/or clarity but remain vigilant on said "editorial bias".
iszomer··on US throws out millions of doses of Covid vaccine as world goes wanting
There has also been a relatively small culture of dumpster diving (for food) because of it.
