isxek··on Microsoft is killing WordPad in Windows
Something I've used time and again when I was still primarily using Windows: Jarte (https://www.jarte.com/). It's small, portable, and works well with RTF files.

Apparently, it can also work with .DOC and .DOCX files (https://www.jarte.com/features.html), but I've never tried it myself.

isxek··on NewLisp
> Michael Fogus (blogger, Closure book author, and all around language nerd) wrote a fascinating article called "fleunpunkt lisps" (forgive spelling)

Was it "Fluchtpunkt Lisp" (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/45838440-fluchtpunkt-lis...)? I tried searching for it, but this is probably the closest I've seen.

isxek··on ScummVM 2.1.0
Not sure if these fit what you're looking for, but there are a couple of disassemblers for Z-Code files:

- Disinformation: http://www.ifarchive.org/indexes/if-archive/infocom/tools/

- Reform: http://www.ifarchive.org/indexes/if-archive/infocom/tools/re...

isxek··on Ask HN: What email client do you use?
> I use Thunderbird - The only desktop client which has both Windows/Linux versions (with identical UIs)

There's also Sylpheed (https://sylpheed.sraoss.jp/en/) and Claws Mail (https://www.claws-mail.org/).

isxek··on Show HN: Bato – A Filipino Programming Language
Indeed. The submission's title should then be changed perhaps to "Bato - the Ruby programming language in Filipino/Tagalog," or perhaps "Bato - Ruby made Filipino/Tagalog."

Hear, hear.
isxek··on Private Git Repository on Any Computer
Until you start hankering for "rebase" or any other history-altering commands. However, if you don't generally use them, Fossil should be able to suit your VCS needs well enough.
isxek··on Show HN: Git-dit – a distributed issue tracker for git
Veracity[0] also had the same "distributed bug tracking" feature built in. Too bad the Sourcegear guys gave up on developing it further.

isxek··on Ergonomica – A cross-platform shell written in Python
Looks like the blog post you linked to has been removed...unintentionally. See this screenshot:

isxek··on Ask HN: Have you ever worked on a product that was killed by technical debt?
Yes and no: the project had a lot of technical debt, but by the time I left the company, the project was still barely alive.
isxek··on Ask HN: Have you ever worked on a product that was killed by technical debt?
I can't remember which podcast episode it was, but I do remember him mentioning a professor in South Korea had once told him he was using his blog posts for his CS classes.
isxek··on 80,000 Hours career plan worksheet
Some of them do.
isxek··on Opera Neon concept browser

isxek··on The Zimbu programming language
What relevance does a monkey have to this programming language? Is the idea that it's so simple a monkey could do it?

Possibly:

isxek··on The lack of a case against Python 3
the key mistake in the transistion to Python 3 that generated this huge divide

Here's how Aaron Swartz (and probably others as well) thinks the transition to Python 3 should have happened: http://www.aaronsw.com/weblog/python3

isxek··on How We Make Money at Stack Overflow
There is, if you use an RSS reader. There are feeds associated with each tag. Try clicking any tag, and you should see a link where you can get an RSS feed of all the new questions that come in for that tag.

It's been there for a long time. ;-)

isxek··on Giteveryday – A useful minimum set of commands for Everyday Git
It also makes sense, I think, considering that Git consists of small tools interacting with each other, while Hg is written as a whole application/system by itself, which can then be extended as needed.
isxek··on Chicken Scheme
Thanks for this. I've seen the "CONS should not CONS" paper somewhere, but skimming over it never really got me anywhere even close to this explanation. I always thought it was some in-jokey reference to US politics, but I couldn't connect the MTA concept.
isxek··on Ask HN: What's the best 'non-frustrating' search/directory UI/UX you've seen?
If you means something that searches for files within any directory, I think the best so far I've used was Everything (https://www.voidtools.com/). Lightweight, fast, and really simple UI.

I'm still looking for a Linux equivalent (I'm currently using a shell wrapper for `ag --depth 0 -g <pattern> <directory>`.)

isxek··on Show HN: Advenjure – Interactive fiction on the terminal and in the browser
Not to mention the internal "world model" has been more-or-less fleshed out throughout the years (see http://inform-fiction.org/manual/html/ch3.html).
isxek··on Fossil: A decentralized version control, bug tracking, and wiki software
Are there really more? Some similar projects like Monotone and Bazaar are no longer being actively/regularly developed IIRC, and the number of hosting services for something as well-known as Mercurial has been dwindling.
isxek··on Fossil: A decentralized version control, bug tracking, and wiki software
Mercurial has a 'rollback' command, which they've marked as deprecated a few months (years?) ago, but you can still use it when you reach a tight spot.
isxek··on Purposes, Concepts, Misfits, and a Redesign of Git
magit being the most prominent and most widely used. Within the emacs GUI.

Since magit was mentioned, I'll add 'fugitive', the Git wrapper for Vim described to be 'so awesome, it should be illegal.'

isxek··on Ask HN: Labour of love projects
I might be wrong, but Hipp does accept patches in a different way. On the Fossil SCM mailing list, I've seen him (and other contributors who have commit access) get patches from users and incorporate them into the project.

They do mention the user who contributed the patch instead of actually assigning the commit to him, though. Does that count somehow?

isxek··on Ask HN: Labour of love projects
I really wish I could play DF, but even as someone who occasionally dabbles with playing roguelikes, I can never get into it. DF looks completely daunting to me at the outset.

I do admire the game's lovely intro sequence, though.

isxek··on Nano to remain in GNU
I'm guessing because there was a period of time where joe's maintainer worked on something else besides joe, and it looked like the project got abandoned already.
isxek··on My best manager did this
Balance is probably the key.
