isxek··on TIS-100: the Programming Game You Never Asked For
I'm also somewhat concerned that if programming were to become my day job, I would lose interest in it.

...Or, as it sometimes happens, you lose interest in writing software for other people.

isxek··on Vis: A Vim-Like Text Editor
Thanks for writing the JOE editor. I've been using it for simple text editing tasks (commit messages, etc.) now that I've moved over to a Linux system. I appreciate its simplicity.
isxek··on Ledger Basics and Habits (2014)
Probably also worth mentioning hledger[0], the Haskell version of ledger which has a limited but growing number of features. They also provide a text-based (hledger-ui) and a web-based (hledger-web) interface.

For my simple needs, this is the one I use.

isxek··on People with names that break computers
And if you are naming kids and want to save them a lot of bureaucracy in their lives, give them short names.

I think it depends. Sometimes it's helpful to give them names that are just long enough to make their identities unique, so when they apply for police clearances, for example, they are not mistaken for similarly-named people with criminal records, or even nasty reputations.

isxek··on We have decided to change the Perfect license [from AGPL to Apache]
The simplicity of GitHub’s pull request has killed the GPL.

Is that true? Doesn't having the ability to send pull requests (or merge requests as GitLab people would prefer) make it easier to contribute?

isxek··on [dead]
Was there more to it?
isxek··on I'm going to slowly move on from Mercurial
Thanks for starting Mercurial.
isxek··on Ask HN: What was your biggest life lesson in 2015?
In general, the older you get, the more "boxed in" you become by your history.

At this point, it's either I start at the very bottom, competing with people fresh off school who are willing to work for next to nothing, or make some loans and take up a new college degree.

isxek··on How to Solve Tabs vs. Spaces Forever
Agreed. I initially thought he was referring to editors like Leo (http://leoeditor.com/) or Code Browser (http://tibleiz.net/code-browser/), but now I'm not sure.
isxek··on SymphonyOS – Light, Friendly, and Useful
Any torrents we can use? I'd rather not get it through a huge HTTP download.
isxek··on Can you solve GCHQ's Christmas card puzzle?
Duplicate of https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10709958
isxek··on Dwarf Fortress 0.42.01 released
There were attempts at implementing some of what you suggested - here's one: https://www.guncho.com/
isxek··on If Lisp Is So Great (2003)
Thanks. This got me started on studying Racket, though:

isxek··on Ask HN: How did you get to your current job/startup?
You're not the only one, friend. :)
isxek··on Myopic version-control islands
Would have been nice if screenshots were included in the post.
isxek··on Stack Exchange Is Now Stack Overflow
The closest example I can probably give is that of Basecamp. They were formerly known as 37signals, and IIRC, they changed their name to Basecamp because it's their most well-known product, among other reasons.
isxek··on Show HN: Journal – Command line utility that creates a daily journal entry
"Used to be?" Sorry, this is the first time I've heard of it. What changed from before?
isxek··on Visual Studio 2015 and .NET 4.6 Available for Download
The provided link is for those with an MSDN subscription. I'm waiting for the Community Edition to appear.
isxek··on Woman's brain tumor is actually her twin, complete with bone, hair, and teeth
For some reason, the story reminded me of that "twins" story arc in the old Hellblazer comic series.
isxek··on Ask HN: Which SciFi novel(s) would you want made into a TV series?
Film, please, only because I think the plot would fit better in a movie. It's like "The Fugitive" - the concept worked better as a movie than a TV show.
isxek··on BitBucket vs. GitLab.com
Let's be clear: they were both created in the same year and the same month (April 2005). Not trying to be pedantic here.
isxek··on I was interviewed by Fog Creek
We make do with things like ConsoleZ/ConEmu, clink, MSYS, sometimes TCC-LE (https://jpsoft.com/tccle-cmd-replacement.html).
isxek··on Kallithea – A free software source code management system
I'd say it would be better to compare Kallithea with Chisel (http://chiselapp.com/), which does actual hosting for Fossil projects. I see Fossil more as a VCS by itself.
isxek··on Firefox 37 Release Notes
Doesn't DuckDuckGo use Yandex's search results?
isxek··on Gitless: experimental version control system
I'm not familiar with either of them. What's wrong with using gitpylib?
isxek··on Do one thing
On a related note, Seinfeld mentions on Reddit the "productivity program" was never actually his idea. https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/1ujvrg/jerry_seinfeld...
isxek··on Gitlet: Git implemented in JavaScript
Thanks for posting this. I remembered seeing a similar project before, but I couldn't remember the name.
isxek··on Lightbot: A simple programming game
Also a great game with the same theme from 2011: Pragmatica

http://www.wearehive.com/games/pragmatica/

isxek··on Fossil – Simple, high-reliability, distributed software configuration management
I can't find it anymore, but Eric Sink (SourceGear) wrote sometime previously on his blog that they've decided to focus more on the mobile market with a product called Zumero (http://zumero.com/). IIRC Zumero came from all their work on Veracity.

FWIW, I had also hoped Veracity would be developed further.

isxek··on Fossil – Simple, high-reliability, distributed software configuration management
There was a previous bug, and it was fixed then, but Zed decided eventually he can't afford to have it happen again (after losing 3 days of work) so he switched to Git.

Richard Hipp (Fossil's author) was able to reconstruct what happened, more or less, here: http://www.mail-archive.com/fossil-users@lists.fossil-scm.or...
