istvanp··on InVision design collaboration services shutdown
That's a different company (Invision Power Services). This post refers to the design collaboration software company (InVisionApp).
istvanp··on Wirecard CEO exits as search for missing billions hits dead end in Asia
Try this, it's the entire thread in one page: https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1273690362608078848.html
istvanp··on Scientists rise up against statistical significance
I would submit this other similar experiment from YouTuber Vsauce [1] where a machine is trained to react to his subconscious thoughts before he consciously chooses to press a button.

[1] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmI7NnMqwLQ Note: full video is behind YT Premium but the preview is enough to understand the experiment.

istvanp··on Why JWTs Suck as Session Tokens (2017)
One of the biggest downsides in my opinion is that session invalidation becomes non-trivial. Your best bet (assuming you don't want to do any additional network requests) is to reduce the session length to the smallest amount you (or users, depending) will tolerate and perform some kind of re-authentication; i.e. force a logout and do a fresh login or check if they can get a new token based on the old one transparently. For example, a user changing their password should kill all tokens that are in use immediately for good security. You can't do that with JWT. All tokens will stay valid until they expire.
istvanp··on Amazon shareholders demand it stop selling facial recognition to governments
While I applaud this effort, this will not stop the use of the technology. It will simply steer them to another provider or a custom implementation (on top of AWS if they so choose to) of this now well-understood technology.
istvanp··on Background Data and Battery Usage of Facebook’s iOS App
I have had issues with playing music via Bluetooth (essentially the volume being too low) and research brought me to the Facebook app being open and closing it fixed it. Facebook is definitely doing funky stuff with audio that it should not be doing.
istvanp··on Show HN: Require approval to merge GitHub pull requests
I think the scenario shadeless was describing is that the author of the PR shouldn't be able to merge but anyone else with write access could. It would be my ideal scenario as well. (You could of course bypass this by doing it in Git if you really needed to.)
istvanp··on First U.S. Bitcoin Exchange Set to Open
or take the URL and prepend it with the search operator "site:"

istvanp··on Ozone-Depleting Compound Persists, NASA Research Shows
Naïve question: is there a way to replenish the ozone layer?
istvanp··on Total darkness at night key to success of breast cancer therapy
So this might explain why I started sleeping better when I installed f.lux[1] which starts eliminating blue light from your screen as soon as the sun sets.

istvanp··on Splashbase: Find free, public domain, hi res photos
For those who prefer to get the images downloaded automatically to your Mac, I made unsplash-rb:

istvanp··on Introducing Swift
It's a comparison of how fast they made a dynamically typed language. (Yes, Objective-C is considered dynamically typed as well.)
istvanp··on Happy ending: @N has been restored to its rightful owner
It's nice that Twitter merged @N_IS_STOLEN with his original @N account.
istvanp··on Stay on top of Github pull requests with Trailer.app
I like it! Some suggestions:

- Make the Pref / About etc. submenu an expandable item from the main menu instead of requiring an extra click (I know you were going for minimalism but it's not that intuitive)

- In the pref window list all the sorting options instead of adding a toggle for reversing direction

- Prompt to create or enter a token immediately on first run

- Auto load project list if there is no cache of it

istvanp··on Meet the BRCK
One key thing left out in the hardware specs: how much does it weigh? Does it weigh just as much as its name says?

If I am to lug this around it better be as light as possible.

istvanp··on Mobile web design: The reign of morons, indeed
Esquire UK recently launched their redesign and has much better UX: http://www.esquire.co.uk/

Perhaps they might apply the same design for the US sometime in the future.

istvanp··on Google Maps a Japanese Nuclear Ghost Town
VICE Japan also made a video [1] on a couple of people (incl. the person in your 2nd link) who decided to stay and take care of what they could.

istvanp··on Show HN: Framebase.io, Video for Developers
Great idea for a service to alleviate the pain of video uploads (& more)!

One thing that should be clear from the Pricing page but is missing though: one-time, monthly or yearly pricing? (Monthly makes the most sense but it should be said either way.)

istvanp··on Nginx now supports Websockets
We are using HAproxy to direct traffic and nginx only as a web server. The config looks something like this: http://stackoverflow.com/a/8640394/218413
istvanp··on MongoDB Is Abusing JSON
What are the main differences between MongoDB and RethinkDB? Things that you hear people care about? I don't use Mongo but I've seen projects that use it. I ask because I want to store & retrieve some analytics.

After seeing the screencast of RethinkDB it seems to me that it's just like Mongo but a much better API and easier handling of sharding and replication. The only con I see of using RethinkDB is that it's very new (so is Mongo...) and probably is little too early for production. Basically I hope not to find worse surprises down the road than I hear of Mongo :P

istvanp··on Ask HN: What Software Did You Pay For In 2012
PassPack, RubyMine and PhpStorm. I found LastPass quite horrible to use compared to PassPack.
istvanp··on How I Quit My Job and Bootstrapped My Startup with Tutorspree
Shameless plug: We recently launched Tutor With Me (http://tutorwith.me) with the hypothesis that there is a need for tutors to tap into a much wider audience than locally. We built it so that the session is hosted directly on our site with video conferencing and other presentation tools. Since we just debuted we only have a tiny user base but I recommend setting up your course and availabilities and you will get pinged if you receive any requests in the future.
istvanp··on Roadmap – nginx
Not if you want to use port 80 for your websockets and http on the same server. We are using haproxy to support both Node and nginx on port 80.
istvanp··on Adobe launches Shadow, a new toolkit for mobile developers
I gave it a quick spin[1] but was a little disappointed that it needed to manually be reconnected to the remote inspector on every page change. It's also completely missing the Network stuff. That said, debugging CSS with this works great.

Interesting side note: it's apparently using weinre[2] as the remote inspector.

[1] Download from here: http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/shadow.html

[2] http://phonegap.github.com/weinre/

Edit: as I understand, the limitations come from weinre because it's JavaScript based on the client side.

istvanp··on What happens after you interview at Y Combinator — and get rejected.
Stripe only works with businesses in the US (for now at least). They are based in Toronto, Canada.
istvanp··on How Wired Published Its GitHub Story on GitHub
You also have to consider that conventional version control was designed specifically for programming code where diffs are done per line (as each line in programming typically serves a single purpose, e.g. assigning a variable). With written language however, that is typically less true. You would only put line breaks after paragraphs and such. Most of the line breaks end up being automatic margin wraps which serve no purpose other purpose than helping readability... Unless you work in version control. What you end up doing is making each paragraph a single line which destroys readability if you don't have virtual text wrapping. Case in point: https://github.com/WiredEnterprise/Lord-of-the-Files/blob/ma...
istvanp··on Inserting Artificial Objects into Photographs
This could be a huge step for augmented reality if the process can be applied in real-time without any user input. It could improve on other research that's already out there like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCEp7udJ2n4
istvanp··on Startup Tools
Also missing from the list: Trello, a team collaboration / project management software. It's so free form that it can be less or more than that. http://www.trello.com
istvanp··on WebGL Water Simulation
It works in Aurora [1] but the FPS is really much lower than what I get in Chrome where it's completely smooth. [1] http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/channel/

Edit: I have version 13 of Chrome and version 7.0a2 (2011-08-10) of Aurora.

istvanp··on Warn HN: Lots of Launches Coming
