isthis1984··on Ask HN: Macbook Pro with external Magic keyboard and Magic pad experience
I was getting some right hand RSI a while ago, so thought I'd try a magic pad. My left hand has very little fine control - I'm very much right handed. I was surprised to find I could use the Magic Pad with my left hand with almost as much control as the right. This was a breakthrough for me, I could just spend a week using my left hand only, and the right hand recovered as new.

Btw I also have used a Logitech Trackball for many years with good results. The right hand issue was from using a mouse for a prolonged period - never again.

It does seem to fit in with many of my observations, and explains some behaviour - is there some alternate reading you'd suggest?

Certainly, but is that discipline you mean? Discipline is a good thing in general, but this isn't discipline - its imposed conformance.

Thanks, @droithomme's comment put me onto that to, I didn't realise it was classed as a personality type not just a form of government. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Authoritarian_Personalit... this irritates me even more that its been known since the 50's and we still put up with it.

The book is here https://smile.amazon.com/Authoritarian-Personality-Theodor-A... the comments are an interesting study alone.

I've observed there are a class of people that desire to keep everyone else under control. There seems to be no other reason than it makes them feel better, the fact that some people are not under control makes them feel uneasy. These people seem to be inserting themselves everywhere, IT is a bonanza for these people. Anyone know any psychology researching this? It's something that's been irritating me more and more since I've noticed it.

Indeed, I feel this entire approach causes employees to adopt maximum disengagement, its the only response that preserves your sanity.

It always causes me to chuckle since its the exact opposite of what management say they want, and they seem to work very hard to produce this result.

I worked on contract at a place for 4 years, worked on 5 or 6 projects. Only one went to production, the management changed their mind on the others after they were finished, the money was good though.

sadly I feel this is the best advice. Modern management are a bunch of feeding piranha when it comes to people who can do stuff.

I work in this place where I've made quite a few nice products the management are selling, they are, in part, keeping the company competitive. However they spend all their time trying to convince me that the work I do is crap and they could do it themselves easily (they're developers to - its a small company).

There is this continuing comedy where a bug or enhancement arrives and they say they'll do it - we don't need you (implied). I say sure, and they fiddle around for days or weeks, occasionally a small one is fixed, but usually they just fiddle around the edges. Eventually they give up and I do the work, and they spend all their time trying to poke holes in what I do so they can prove that they don't need me.

I asked for a couple of pay rises initially and they don't want to pay me more. Here's the bit that really gets me - this has been going on for a couple of years, and competitors products are overtaking ours which were leading edge. They spend all their time saying they don't need me and to the extent that they're actually hurting their business.

I've given up a long time ago and have moved to part time and I'm developing my own business, so I don't really care, the cash coming in is enough to keep me going, so all good. They still keep asking me to go back full time, but they don't need me, and they don't need anything changed. It truely is the most bizarre experience.

(It feels good sharing this :-) )
