isodev··on Goodbye Google
So far, 100% of things "democratized" by big tech have been bad for people.
isodev··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
It's a bad idea as long as there is a corp behind it. "AI for good" is not possible as long as anyone related to it has financial incentives.
isodev··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
Whatever happened to no bio research? It's absurd that these companies are even remotely allowed to work in this domain without profuse oversight and independent monitoring.

Also, does Claude produce the references and original authors of the knowledge and research that provided for this "discovery" so they can get credited? I didn't think so.

isodev··on No Sloptober
I don't understand why is this flagged though, sounds like something one might want to try?
isodev··on Claude Opus 5.5
The site is horrific so no, I didn't scroll.
isodev··on Claude Opus 5.5
So is it cheaper? Are we AGI yet? Am I left behind? I didn't have patience for the intro animation on the website... maybe one day, Claude Code will understand accessibility but that day is not today.
isodev··on Weeping whales: Stillborn humpback whale grieving documented
Applies to every living thing with a limbic system. So yes, that steak or chicken nuggets...
isodev··on Xcode 27.1 Beta Release Notes
And when did Apple decide to grace us with tools to support the Duo? Yeah, 3 hours ago. This should've been out in June so they can also get the feedback about all the silly design choices the Duo brings (and the bugs in that simulator). Too bad I can't just send them an invoice for all the wasted time.
isodev··on Xcode 27.1 Beta Release Notes
What is your point? That they eventually released something? The simulator came out today... on Friday afternoon lol
isodev··on Xcode 27.1 Beta Release Notes
It really feels quite irrelevant. Also, the amount of work to support this with zero support from Apple since WWDC is just absurd. And even if one does the work, Apple will just sherlock the cool features into their apps.
isodev··on US Treasuries Have Become Unappetizing for Foreign Central Banks and Governments
Imagine, even Apple is moving itself to the shitlist.
isodev··on Canada welcomes EU proposal to become 'associate member'
Well the process has to start somewhere right? In politics (as in real life) words matter and what is being said today in these statements are the general outlines of how this relationship is going to move forward.
isodev··on Canada welcomes EU proposal to become 'associate member'
Good. The EU is an economic and political union so facilitating trade and movement between political allies seems only natural.
isodev··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
I'm very happy Siri AI is not available here so there is practically nothing big and flashy changing.

It's like getting a iOS 26 Service Pack 1 :)

isodev··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
The question is if Apple fixed that and I don't think they have.
isodev··on Apple's Siri AI Can Be Swapped Out for Claude, ChatGPT, Code Shows
How do you know?

Also given that PCC is just marketing speak for "Apple pinky promise they don't read or share the data", it would be nice to get an API with first class access to my own data. So tired of being locked it.

isodev··on Apple's Siri AI Can Be Swapped Out for Claude, ChatGPT, Code Shows
Nice, thanks EU for forcing Apple. I guess it was possible all along.
isodev··on David Sacks: OpenAI and Anthropic Don't Need Regulations to Pace Frontier Models
> they can strike an agreement in private

That's what we call a cartel. Like Apple and Google.

isodev··on LG denies TV spying claims, says tracking and snooping concerns 'not true'
> The majority of the problem is also simply the ability to record.

Exactly, and recent announcements like Apple normalising always on recording, even wrapped in “big promises” on privacy, deserve a lot more attention and strong regulation.

isodev··on Starlink Signal Leakage Threatens Radio Astronomy's Most Critical Frequencies
Or Space Karen can fix his space junk...

Maybe even start paying for the toxic waste he is landing when his junk continuously fails to stay up and re-enters the atmosphere.

isodev··on QBittorrent breaks out of sandbox to commit crimes
Bigger corporations mitigate the problem by feeding content (that they don't own but happen to have) to training models. It's a version of "faire use" where << if you manage to find it, it's yours >> mindset is applied. Maybe worth looking into.
isodev··on Git hosting that never leaves Europe
Hey Peter, that's a very cool idea. I think (digital) sovereignty doesn't just happen, it's something we need to build and that's how we do it. It's a bit like "local first". Looking forward to using it once it launches :)
isodev··on Statichost.eu – European static site hosting
Yes, it does generate the certificate
isodev··on Statichost.eu – European static site hosting
For less than a cup of coffee yeah.
isodev··on Ask HN: Why were OpenAI, Claude, and Grok simultaneously down?
You're right to push back. This is bending the leaf on both ends... just my honest take.
isodev··on Ambient CSS v3 – Blender meets CSS
I love the concept but (at least on mobile Safari) most of it feels unusable.
isodev··on Tim Cook Sold Out Steve Jobs (2025)
> blame whoever decided it was a great idea to pay executives in stock/stock options

Yes, I do agree that extreme forms of capitalism are responsible for ruining practically every aspect of modern tech.

> Apple ran so hard on privacy with (apparently) the explicit intention of creating a market for their ad products

Indeed. It wasn't obvious at the time, but with hindsight we can see that the push for privacy was only in areas where Apple wanted to counter Meta/competitors or gain advantage in specific verticals. It was never "user focused".

isodev··on Tim Cook Sold Out Steve Jobs (2025)
> he sold out his customers

I think it's important to remind ourselves that the responsibility doesn't lie with the one individual. Even the visit to the WH dinner - it is the company, Apple, via various structures committed to doing those things with various VPs and staff onboard brainstorming and supporting along the way.

So "John" may bring some nuances but let's not be under the illusion that a huge corporation like Apple would suddenly bounce off to a different track.

isodev··on Ask HN: If AI disappeared today, how much would you ask for in salary to work?
How do you mean? If AI disappeared today, not much would change about my work. I make software.
isodev··on U.S. sanctions against the A/I Collective
No, it doesn't. That there are different words for it should be a hint it's different things.
