islon··on How to Use Clojure for Scripting
If the JVM or the startup time bother you you can try using ClojureScript with node.js.
islon··on Advantages of Functional Programming in Java 8
For me the biggest advantage of FP languages is exactly not have to deal with `GenericConverter`s, `AbstractDTO`s, `BaseEntity`s and other overly-complex constructs that many OO languages inflict upon the programmer, but to create a small and simple sub-language that solves my problem without making it even more complex.
islon··on Epic Games founder says Microsoft's patches will make Steam progressively worse
Well, you are looking in the wrong places then, there's plenty of complaints about apple/google walled gardens and people don't want windows to be the next one.
islon··on What’s Next for Artificial Intelligence
We would want the AI we build to ultimately share our values, so that it can work as an extension of our will. It does not look promising to write down a long list of everything we care about. It looks more promising to leverage the AI’s own intelligence to learn about our values and what our preferences are.

This looks like a nice intro to a dystopian sci-fi movie.

islon··on Singapore Is Taking the ‘Smart City’ to a New Level
Alternate title/tl;dr: "Singapore Is Taking the ‘Smart City’ to a Whole New Orwellian Level"
islon··on Node.js ES2015/ES6 support
I wish they were adding power to js as they did to Lua: with simplicity.

Instead they are doing doing the C++/Scala way: with complexity.

Good thing I have Clojurescript...

islon··on Dark Patterns by the Boston Globe
I do something similar but using noScript (js disabled by default).

Most of the times the news are loaded without popups and sometimes with wrong CSS but still readable.

Sometimes I need to enable js only for the actual host for it to work. In the end it's worth the hassle.

islon··on Mutations in Y Chromosome made us separate species from Neanderthals
Took me a few seconds and some stares to my dutch friend until I realized I read "Netherlanders" and not "Neanderthals"
islon··on Microsoft chatbot is taught to swear on Twitter
"The experimental AI, which learns from conversations, was designed to interact with 18-24-year-olds."

The experiment was a success then.

islon··on Study finds connections between birth month and health
"The risk related to birth month is relatively minor when compared to more influential variables like diet and exercise."

The most important information in the article.

islon··on The Man Who Tried to Redeem the World with Logic
"But three years later, when he heard that Russell would be visiting the University of Chicago, the 15-year-old ran away from home and headed for Illinois. He never saw his family again." Assuming that 80% of humanity lives on less than $10 a day, and are, therefore, poor, I can just imagine the number of geniuses born poor that will not ever be able to show their geniality to the world.

Imagine how the world would be a better place with all these people working as scientists, philosophers, mathematicians, etc.

islon··on Is reality a computer simulation? Does it matter?
If our reality is a big simulated game I only wanted to have access to the developer console...
islon··on Artificial intelligence: machine v man
"... And with the accelerating pace of technological change, it wouldn’t be long before the capabilities – and goals – of the computers would far surpass human understanding."

"...In their single-mindedness, they would view their biological creators as mere collections of matter..."

These two sentences are contradictory.

islon··on UCLA, Cisco and more join forces to replace TCP/IP
What could possibly go wrong? It's not like the whole internet as we know it depends at some level of tcp/ip and there's (probably) billions of lines of code depending on it.
islon··on The Future Programming Manifesto
"Inessential complexity is the root of all evil" this should be the wallpaper of every programmer.
islon··on Facebook Takes Steps Against ‘Click Bait’ Articles
"Facebook decided to take action against click bait headlines, you won't believe what happens next"
islon··on A Meta-Law to Rule Them All: Physicists Devise a “Theory of Everything”
Can't wait to read physics papers about AbstractGravityFactoryFactory.
islon··on Finances of a Bare Bones Developer
If Notch had done what you said Minecraft would never exist.
islon··on Software estimation considered harmful? (2011)
My big point is:

- If you don't know what you are doing or you are doing for the first time, there's no point in estimate as your estimations will be off anyway.

- If you know what you are doing and already did it before, there's no point in estimate as you already know how much time it'll take.

islon··on Ask HN: Show us your abandoned (and probably incomplete) side projects
https://github.com/stackoverflow/clojure-crawl

A very simple and crude dungeon crawl made when I was learning Clojure (the code is very bad as I was learning the language).

islon··on Ask HN: Why hasn't Dart become mainstream?
For me it doesn't have any interesting feature that would make me use it over Clojurescript. No macros, no functional focus, just the old Java way.
islon··on Clojure Style Guide
`Prefer .. to -> when chaining method calls in Java interop.`

That works if there's only Java calls in your chain. I, for one, prefer to use the more generic threading macros.

islon··on Roda – A new Ruby web framework
It means wheel in portuguese too (and probably spanish).
islon··on 20 cool Clojure functions
He forgot `group-by` which is very useful.

    (group-by :age [{:name "joe" :age 13 :sex \m}
                    {:name "sara" :age 13 :sex \f}
                    {:name "John" :age 20 :sex \m}])
    => {13 [{:age 13, :sex \m, :name "joe"} {:age 13, :sex \f, :name "sara"}],
        20 [{:age 20, :sex \m, :name "John"}]}
islon··on Ask HN: Why does the enterprise have such a strong affinity to Java?
The "it's impossible/unmaintainable to develop a huge/enterprise codebase in a dynamically typed language" meme is really sad here on HN, specially for some one who works/maintains a huge/enterprise codebase in a dynamically typed language with a big team and have no problems at all.

Anyway I agree static typing was a big plus for java for the sole reason many people believe dynamic languages are just for scripts and small hacks.

islon··on React v0.11
And the best thing is that I can use react with Clojurescript (Om), which makes it even faster =)
islon··on North Texas citizens organize to monitor police with video cameras
So finally we found a use for google glass.
islon··on IBM announces $3B research initiative
What do you mean "again"?
islon··on Facebook wants to 'listen' to your music and TV
This app requires the following permissions: read you thoughts.
islon··on The Indie Bubble Is Popping
I don’t think the problem is money vs games (the X and Y) the problem is time vs games. I have enough money to buy all the games I want and don’t want to play, most of them are very cheap in bundles and promotions, I just don’t have time to play all of them (I’m talking more about pc/console games, not mobile ones). There’s only so much games you can buy and not play before you start thinking about not buying anymore and focus on the ones you really want to play.
