ishvanl··on Rupert Murdoch steps down as Fox and News Corp chairman
Bugger. I was hoping for him to die in office, causing an executive power struggle and sending his media empire into calamitous decline.
ishvanl··on Why do railway tracks have crushed stones alongside them?
Well, the original post isn't about how particularly efficient ChatGPT is at stripping all of the character and large amounts of information from a perfectly good source. The original post is about railway ballast, and as such, this comment is completely and utterly irrelevant.
ishvanl··on Toaster: Pure CSS 3D Editor
I'm doing fine on Safari. Sitting around 30 fps for me during moves etc. (Safari 16.1 on MacOS Ventura; M1 Pro)
ishvanl··on GCC 13 Supports New C2x Features, Including Nullptr, Enhanced Enumerations
As a rust programmer... etc etc.
ishvanl··on Asahi Linux to Users: Please Stop Using X.org
Do you have a source on the MacBook audio thing? That's something I'd very much like to have a look at.
ishvanl··on Ask HN: What's the best (non-spammy) way to promote an open source tool?
Yes, but where would the world be if people didn't share things with each other?
ishvanl··on Australia is quitting coal in record time thanks to Tesla
Is it? I'm Australian & haven't heard a thing about this.
ishvanl··on GM plans to phase out Apple CarPlay in EVs, with Google's help
Honestly I'm not surprised to hear GM doing something this ridiculous. GM's primary business has been finding new footguns for itself since at least the 1980s; at this point, the only thing going for the company is that their cars are American made (sometimes), and even the beneficial effects of that are debatable at best.
ishvanl··on macOS Cursors
Here’s an interesting and perplexing point about MacOS cursors tangentially related to this article.

Final Cut Pro, Apple’s flagship video editing software, overrides the default MacOS cursor with a nearly identical, but slightly different cursor shape. It’s almost exactly the same as the standard retina MacOS cursor but the little “stem” at the bottom is shorter & points slightly more to the right. I’d expect this from a weird niche bit of open source software, but for one of the Mac’s flagship applications it’s a bit strange. Perhaps someone here could enlighten me to the purpose of this bizarre quirk.

ishvanl··on Unpredictable abilities emerging from large AI models
I think this example really illustrates the leaps and bounds made between [Chat]GPT-3 & GPT-4. The first text sounds like some slightly shoddy marketing copy, or perhaps a high schooler's C-minus attempt at a creative writing class, but if you told me that the second text was an extract from a Tolkien novel, I'd probably believe you.
ishvanl··on Unpredictable abilities emerging from large AI models
There is an idea bouncing around my brain for a pipe-dream science fiction book I could write, about the rise of the first truly sentient (or sentient-appearing) AI & its effects on the world.

It is beginning to get to the point where I am considering whether I need to actually start writing this book before this "sci-fi" concept becomes a mundane reality.

ishvanl··on Bandcamp Unionizes
> Bandcamp has a clear path forward to future success, and it starts with our union having a seat at the table.

Not sure whether this is saying that Bandcamp has already established a cooperative stance with the union, or if it's saying that doing so should be Bandcamp's next step. I'm hoping that it's the first option, but otherwise this is definitely a positive development.

ishvanl··on The Door Close Button
"Thou shalt not... elevator... buttons may not be... oh whatever, just put something in there about adultery."
ishvanl··on Ask HN: Has anyone started over outside of tech?
I second this. My thing is pottery. I started in January of 2021 and have been doing it ever since. It cost me 50 dollars for a few hour-long courses at a local studio and it has been an absolute godsend. The pure cosmic joy of seeing and feeling something come into existence quite literally in your hands is unparalleled.
ishvanl··on I don't like making the best things
> a soup-to-nuts walk through of popular, lynchpin open-source codebases

This sounds fantastic. I'm a self taught developer in largely the situation you describe and this book sounds like something that would be amazing for someone like me. Please post it on HN when it's presentable!

ishvanl··on The Intel 8086 chip only has 19618 transistors instead of the 29k advertised
I want my money back.
ishvanl··on They Dispense Street Justice, One Defaced License Plate at a Time
Consider that underpaid BIPOC and undocumented immigrants are less likely to be able to own a car and are thus, as pedestrians, more at risk of injury from reckless drivers. Also consider that a $200 fine, while still unfortunate, is a hell of a lot easier to recover from than being hit by 2 tons of SUV at high speed.
ishvanl··on Tesla: Our ‘failure’ to make actual self-driving cars ‘is not fraud’
"We said we were going to do something, and then we didn't."

Isn't that the textbook definition of false advertising?

ishvanl··on Ask HN: Those with money-making side projects, how did you come up with the idea?
Wow, you did neocities? That's become a genuine social fixture in many ways in a number of the circles I'm in.
ishvanl··on Ask HN: What's your proudest hack?
This is outstanding.
