ishaanbahal··on Okay, I Like WezTerm
Did go through it, bookmarked for use, that's how I learned about the command palette, just hard to break the habit of using zellij, that too with tmux mode :D
ishaanbahal··on Okay, I Like WezTerm
For me, speed, simplicity in configuration, and no AI is more or less a good start. I moved from iTerm to Warp recently, before switching to wezterm, and the only reason i dropped Warp (despite signing in) was that it comes in your way a lot, the click to focus on blocks becomes a hindrance for me (I hardly care for the previous blocks), the constant reminders in Red to update and obviously the AI prompting, albeit to the side, they keep trying to find a way for me to use it, but I'd rather stick with CTRL+R or quick google search than write a coherent sentence explaining things to a LLM.

I left iTerm because I couldn't configure it to my liking, although there are certainly ways to do it, i just couldn't. iTerm2 is certainly a good enough terminal, wezterm just somehow suits my needs better.

ishaanbahal··on Okay, I Like WezTerm
Thank you for this write-up! Going to copy a couple of things to my config. TIL, Wezterm has a command palette.

Wezterm with Zellij becomes amazing with how it just simply gets out of the way, even lets you remove window decorations entirely. I've heard Wezterm has a multiplexer too, but just haven't tried it.

ishaanbahal··on Zed Editor automatically downloads binaries and NPM packages without consent
Thanks for this response. Zed is awesome, haven't been able to switch to it full-time due to [1] https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/5065, but do appreciate what's being built.

It's a new product, which is clearly seeing quick changes every week, so hopeful you'll get to this one soon. The internet will always be extreme around any issue, and make it seem like the end of the world, to those folks, maybe try zed again later? It's still a good editor to keep in mind.

Although one minor thing about this, getting users accustomed to this flow and then later asking for consent might also raise issues, like this one, just with a more "Zed now prompting for every little thing" in future. So might want to keep that in mind.

Loving zed for go development (especially with a decent suite of Vim bindings), just haven't been able to use things like Flutter , due to lack of debug support, which VSCode does quite well (albeit crashes a bunch).

ishaanbahal··on Exercises to Learn Rust
Have been using go for 8 years now, and started with this. And to be quite honest, I still refer to this sometimes for quick lookup on certain things related to syntax, pools, waitgroups or channels. Beautifully done tutorial of Golang, can be done in a few hours and gets you a good base knowledge of the language.

To the creator, a sincere thank you!

ishaanbahal··on Indian developer fired 90 percent of tech support team, outsourced the job to AI
Indian here, that may be true for outsourced customer support with no actual company folks intervening but rather giving guidelines and scripts, but the startups running for India (say Zomato, Swiggy etc), the support team tends to help a lot (once you manage to connect with them after the silly chatbot that's always useless, relinquishes control), their priority is much like the early days of amazon where customer success was everything. Ironically, all western companies that have made it to India, have the same kind of support as you mentioned, like Uber, Amazon(lately) etc.

I'm unsure what the Dukaan model is, as its a storefront business, I guess most requests were essentially about how to do this/that on the store front, that can basically be an LLM ran over a small data set of their own FAQ. I wonder if their bot also has hallucination issues.. The 10% remaining CX folks are probably there to answer questions or give support on the genuine problems that are solved case by case.

ishaanbahal··on The QR-code menu is being shown the door
Reading the comments here, seems like countries have really good integrations with QR menus, like Apple/Google Pay, out here, in India, all we mostly get is a download for a PDF hosted on a Google Drive, that is a bunch of images and is a 50-100 MB download (because why compress?), and then you have to constantly pinch to zoom and pan through the document, I have some 40-50 of them on my phone because when I go again, I won't remember the menu already exists with me, I'll download again.

The ones that are decent are also not that great, the JS code that runs constantly stutters and its basically a delivery menu, allowing you to place orders, seems off putting in dining out.

Have had a hard time convincing waiting staff to give me a physical menu, and I keep hearing a response, we have QR, as if that's making them somehow tech-savvy. Its a restaurant, I don't think you ever need to be tech-savvy, just serve good food. Doubt they'd be able to reduce waiting staff by introducing these tech features anyway.

Worst is McDonald's (IND) attempting to force people to use the large TV touchscreens to place orders, and two or more people (helpers) keep helping you use it and eventually place the whole order for you, and it lacks customizations like no tomatoes etc, so you anyway give up and go to the counter. It's possibly an attempt to reduce work staff, but seems forced on to the customer. And the touch latency is just... resistive touch phones were a lot better.

ishaanbahal··on Colima: Container runtimes on macOS (and Linux) with minimal setup
Colima has been an awesome replacement of Docker Desktop for me on Mac. It seems to run light, doesn't prompt for updates on system launch, in fact doesn't even auto launch on startup, have to manually do colima start. And docker just works flawlessly. Kudos to the team who built this. Best part is this nifty little command that allows for auto complete script generation for the required shell, try it:

colima completion zsh

Using 14" M1 Pro Mac, experience may vary on different hardware I suppose.

ishaanbahal··on March 20 ChatGPT outage: Here’s what happened
The emphasis could also have been done to educate folks using this combination to check their setup.

Though version reference in the postmartem should also be posted, as a general guidance to their own readers, but at least a quick google search leads you to it.

https://github.com/redis/redis-py/releases/tag/v4.5.3

For anyone reading this and using a combination of asyncio and py-redis, please bump your versions.

Similar issues I've encountered with asyncio python and postgres too in the past when trying to pool connections. It's really not easy to debug them either.

ishaanbahal··on Flutter is better than React Native in all the ways that don’t matter
I started writing flutter apps in their RC1, and since then up till last year (since then I haven't written flutter), flutter had scrolling frame drops on both iOS and Android (high and low end). It was unrelated to device, and happened always when using the listview builder. It may have been fixed now, but it was an issue for a long while. And it also plagued web (hummingbird then).
ishaanbahal··on gRPC Is Easy to Misconfigure
It normally does this in my experience (same when disconnection happens due to network unavailability). Have faced issues in dart where it takes some time to reconnect but it always reconnects automatically.
ishaanbahal··on AirMessage – Android app to interface with iMessage on a Mac
> Right, I'm that way too. But the rest of the world basically chose to download another app instead.

> So that's what I wonder about -- why did the US not bother, but the rest of the world did? What was different about the US?

Not sure about the rest of the world, but India specifically, has more whatsapp users because we have more Android users. iPhone is considered more of a luxury here, even now and with millions using android devices, ios users do end up downloading a common app that everyone has. Also helped by the fact that there's no standardisation of message apps in android, though Google messages is trying RCS, more than half the phones don't ship with Google messages, even the close to stock ones like OnePlus have their own implementation, so a third party became standard for even android to android communication.

ishaanbahal··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2020)
Maybe because they're looking for a time overlap during work house in the same timezone. Probably not a fully remote company, most people working from the timezone or even city.
ishaanbahal··on Why We’re Switching to gRPC
Great to see people using GRPC, but this article doesn't state anything that the actual grpc.io website doesn't, except for the OpenAPI comparison.
ishaanbahal··on Freelancer.com stole from me and ruined my life
Well, now its 404.
ishaanbahal··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2019)
Please check the tags you use when you add a posting. A lot of scrapers use these and people filter on them. You've added "VISA" but also say "this job is open to US Residents only. Foreign nationals CAN apply, but only if you live within the US", seems you've copied a previous post and replaced some content, forgot to replace some
ishaanbahal··on Free images for your startup / website
Just try to download an image, and read the text on the right side. You'll see what I posted. :) Good luck with the new project!
ishaanbahal··on Free images for your startup / website
If you try to download an image, you're greeted with "Get access to the best collection of member generated royalty-free images, at the world's best prices. It's free and only takes a minute."

I'm not quite sure what's free. :|

ishaanbahal··on Free images for your startup / website
Unsplash, pexels, both have a good collection of royalty free images that can be used without attribution, commercially.
ishaanbahal··on Show HN: Meeve, a hyperlocal platform for offline interaction through events
Meeve is a hyperlocal platform to help people discover people nearby through events that have similar interests. You can discover local events based on your interests and can also create gender only events that are not shown to people of other genders.
ishaanbahal··on Microsoft intercepting Firefox, Chrome installation on Windows 10 Insider build
I think your neighbours machine went into some issue and did an automatic restore to some working state, which probably was the first login state. The files remained but the rest of the software got removed that probably don't ship with Windows. So maybe this one was not MS trying to remove your open source browsers, but just doing a system restore using an image.
ishaanbahal··on Show HN: NES Party – Online Multiplayer NES Emulator Using WebRTC
Coolest piece of tech I've seen whole day! TMNT doesn't load though! Tried multiple times! :(
ishaanbahal··on Introducing Android 9 Pie
I heard they cancelled it, but in all honesty, they did something that every one caught up on, including Apple I think, the notch! And they even did it right. I think they should get to release another device, this time just pricing it right would probably help them get a better market hold. PH-1, is amazing because of the updates!
ishaanbahal··on Slack Is Buying HipChat from Atlassian
I'd say you should give Flock a shot! It does provide a very similar feature set and does some things differently! The ease you talk about is all there, a lot of third party app integrations are also there. The platform lets you run proper apps inside of flock, apart from the usual slash commands and bots. All the pricing grids provide video conference by default, even the free plan! And the pricing is way cheaper than Slack.

I'm a dev at Flock, and an ex-user of Slack in my previous company, I hardly miss anything Slack had that isn't there on Flock!

ishaanbahal··on Dispatch: web-based IRC client in Go
I don't know why the underlying language for the code is important in the product description? Seems a little clickbait to me. Instead why not focus of the UX you provide or the speed that you have. I just don't get why the mention of GoLang is required, unless its a hobby project for someone learning GoLang. I've seen a lot of these projects mentioning Rust or GoLang lately, capitalising on their popularity, I get that Open Source projects help in understanding the language and hacking around it, but repetitive projects also do this! Is there some reason for it? Btw, I did like the UI, only ended up with this error "Error: tls: oversized record received with length 20306" post login.
ishaanbahal··on GitLab sees huge spike in project imports
I really like how the devs from gitlab are active on the HN thread and replying to people facing problems! Hardly see that with mature products anymore! Great going guys!
ishaanbahal··on The Stuxnet worm may be the most sophisticated software ever written
Yeah, I never understood why people think like this. I often read people saying Linux is most secure or some Unix or Mac, Any operating system can be equally vulnerable, humans are writing code for it after all. And blaming Microsoft for the insecure OS seems even worse. Their OS runs on way too many machines, making it the first target. I love linux, not for the security, but just for the utilities on the command line I can use. I'd feel equally unsafe on either OS!
ishaanbahal··on Show HN: I built a peer-to-peer publishing platform
Can't open, do you yourself even have the tab open? :P
ishaanbahal··on Show HN: Phi-editor, a text editor implemented in Go and SDL
"Phi is a minimal text editor designed to look pretty, run fast, and be easy to configure and use. It's primary function is for editing code."

"The editor is written as if it's a game, so it will probably eat up your battery, as well as run possibly quite slow - especially if you dont have a dedicated GPU - and probably crash frequently."

Can't quite understand what it wants to be, a fast editor that's minimal or one that's like a game and kills my battery and run slow?

ishaanbahal··on Make Firefox support moz://a
Why would a search engine index something that is just a local easter egg in the client software? It's not a real protocol, it will definitely redirect to an http website.
