isaacfrond··on Britain wants to become global AI leader, build domestic OpenAI rival
Right, becomes that is how capitalism work. Governments known for their high efficiency and market cunning step in to copy successes from overseas.

Oh, and the UK government is going to train on a terabyte of pirated books and movies. Nah, don't think so.

isaacfrond··on Rational or not? This basic math question took decades to answer
The number you are looking for is e^(sqrt(163) pi). According to Wikipedia:

In a 1975 April Fool article in Scientific American magazine,[8] "Mathematical Games" columnist Martin Gardner made the hoax claim that the number was in fact an integer, and that the Indian mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan had predicted it – hence its name.

It is not an integer of course.

isaacfrond··on Reflections
OpenAi has single handedly revolutionized the AI field. They have turned the once-thought impossible to achieve Turing test to a irrelevant side quest. Not to mention the many, many benchmarks that simply aren’t even hard enough any more to measure to quick progress AI is making.

Yet, somehow, Altman has gone ‘full retard’. Wow. Cut the guy some slack man. Next time you revolutionize an entire field and build a multi-billion company in the process you can come back to criticize him.

isaacfrond··on Poker players keep a New Year's resolution
tl;dr

If someone [a professional gambler] wanted to set and pursue a goal (such as losing weight, quitting smoking, exercising on a schedule or lowering their golf handicap), they would just canvass the regulars in the poker room for someone to bet them they couldn’t do it.

isaacfrond··on Single cigarette takes 20 minutes off life expectancy, study finds
I can well imagine a (first order) linear effect.

Inhaling toxic fumes gives a probability p that a cell is harmed into a cancer cell. The probability of a hit after n trials equals 1-(1-p)^n. First order approximation (this is the Binomial approximation), this equals n*p. This is accurate for small p and large n, exactly the situation smoking would be in.

isaacfrond··on Magnus Carlsen to return to World Blitz Championship after dress code dispute
The man is such a prima donna. First the Niemann dispute, now he needs a dispensation because he won’t stick to the dress code rules.
isaacfrond··on LLMs are everything that it wrong in computing
How quickly people turn blaise about the micracle that LLMs are. Just a few years ago, passing the Turing test seemed an unattainable goal now it is an irrelevance.

Yet the author thinks ‘ChatGPT, LLMs and all that crap’. Unbelievable.

I use LLMs everyday. It has not only boosted productivity, but most of all, it made workmore fun.

isaacfrond··on Leaked Documents Show OpenAI Has a Clear Definition of 'AGI'
tl;dr

OpenAI and Microsoft define AGI as AI software that can generate at least $100 billion in profits.

isaacfrond··on Spain introduces bill to combat online fake news
Sounds great, but who gets to decide what is fake news?

Article does not give too many details. Apparently

These outlets and the platforms that host them must have a mechanism to facilitate citizens’ right to ask that false or inaccurate information that harms them be corrected publicly, the ministry said.

So there is a citizens’ right? That's going to be interesting. Anybody with an axe to grind, can file a request for correction. hmm, that's going to work great.

isaacfrond··on Huge math error corrected in black plastic study; authors say it doesn't matter

isaacfrond··on Lonely individuals tend to think and talk in an unusual way, study finds
Read the whole article wondering how lonely people think differently.

But I now understand that it is just that: different. They do not conform to what the norm thinks.

Seen in that light: lonely people are lonely because they are weird. Right. Good to know.

isaacfrond··on Elon Musk targets Microsoft in expanded OpenAI lawsuit
This? This was the reason of running for shadow president of efficiency? One guy becomes president to stay out of jail; the other to get back at OpenAI.
isaacfrond··on Something weird is happening with LLMs and chess
There is a small difference between the app and the browser. before each session, the llm is started with a systems prompt. these are different for the app and the browser. You can find them online somewhere, but iirc the app is instructed to give shorter answers
isaacfrond··on A Student's Guide to Writing with ChatGPT
I had no idea what even the question was. I had chatgpt (4o) explain it to me, and solve it. I now know what candidate keys are, and that the question asks for AB and BC. I'd share the link, but chatgpt doesn't support sharing logs with images.

So you did not convince me that LLMs are not working (on the contrary), but I did learn something today! thanks for that.

isaacfrond··on OpenAI and others seek new path to smarter AI as current methods hit limitations
ChatGPT's 200 million weekly active users worldwide would disagree with you.

Anybody know what model architectures they used?

The motion detection might be a convolutional network or an svm. The mixer model perhaps a classic neural network.

isaacfrond··on Debate May Help AI Models Converge on Truth
I haven't used this trick yet, but I'll surely will.

I read somewhere (can't remember where) that if you use only one model, you're getting at most 50% of the potential of LLMs. Routinely, I'll give a prompt both to ChatGPT and to Claude. Sometimes I'll take part of one answers, sometimes part of another. I haven't yet tried to have them critique each other.

isaacfrond··on Evaluating the world model implicit in a generative model
I think there is a philosophical angle to this. I mean, my world map was constructed by chance interactions with the real world. Does this mean that the my world map is a close to the real world map, as their NN's map is to Manhattan? Is my world map full of non-existent streets, exits that are at the wrong place, etc. The NN map of Manhattan works almost 100% correctly when used for normal navigation but breaks apart badly when it has to plan a detour. How brittle is my world map?
isaacfrond··on Is the Q source the origin of the Gospels?
> the best historical records (...) to help us figure out the truth (...)

> When exactly did the angel appear to declare that Jesus is risen? In the tomb? Outside the tomb? Etc. etc.

Right. An angel appeared. You going to need a whole lot better evidence to convince me of that, than a few ancient text that may or may not agree with each other.

isaacfrond··on I attended Google's creator conversation event, and it turned into a funeral
You need to read better: The day before, he led the group on a tour of Google’s biggest office

So that would be October 28. Apparently, the office was closed that day. As the author was there on 29 as well, it’s still pretty misleading though.
