iruoy··on So You Want to Compete with Steam (2018)
He wrote a follow-up a year later.

iruoy··on Launch Attempt Scrubbed
I'm not so sure. If the rocket needs to be rolled back I don't think they can make the September 2 or 5 launch windows.

They should've just done the full Wet Dress Rehearsal.

iruoy··on Launch Attempt Scrubbed
> Very few launch vehicles get off in their first launch window.

This was their 3rd launch window right?

iruoy··on Minify your container
You'll need to make sure that the binary is statically linked though.
iruoy··on Asus Zenfone 9
It seems like that phone will get 2 major updates (Android version upgrades?) and 2 years of security updates. Nothing more than any other brand will give you.

iruoy··on GnuCash – Open-source personal and small-business accounting software
That's because it's running on rosetta2. Works fine though. This isn't a resource intensive app
iruoy··on 10% of the top million sites are dead
I haven't tested this, but the "Cisco Umbrella 1 Million" is generated daily from DNS request made to the Cisco Umbrella DNS service. That seems to be a very good and recent dataset.

It does count more than just visiting websites though. If all Windows computers query the IP of microsoft.com once a day that'll move them up quite a bit. And things in their top 10 like googleapis.com and doubleclick.net are obviously not visited directly.

So while it is quite a reliable and recent dataset, it is not a good test of popularity.

iruoy··on Postgres 15 improves UNIQUE and NULL
I like to have my `*_id` columns at the front, and `created_at` etc. at the back. And in the middle all the fields by descending importance. Just a personal habit so I can quickly lookup data in a table.
iruoy··on Mapy.cz – Lesser Known but Awesome Maps
You might want to go to https://en.mapy.cz instead of the link above.
iruoy··on macOS screenshot tricks to impress your co-workers
Windows + Shift + S is what I used daily on Windows. The screenshot is saved to the clipboard and can be pasted straight into your chat app.

I have Command + Shift + 4 configured to save to clipboard aswell now.

iruoy··on Hetzner subsea fibre cut outage
That seems to be correct.

https://www.hetzner.com/presse-berichte/2016/01/156818

> Hetzner Online GmbH, the first major Central European provider of data center services to construct a new data center park in Finland, is also a user and co-investor in the Cinia CLion1 cable connection.

iruoy··on Ghost 5.0
This is not a production server. Just something I'm running for personal services.

And I would expect a new major release to run on the latest even version of nodejs. The uneven versions are for development purposes. Version 18 will become the active LTS in a few months.

iruoy··on Ghost 5.0
I couldn't even install this on my server because it has Node 18 instead of 16
iruoy··on Pedal Me bans staff riders from wearing helmets for safety reasons
I've skied in Austria for the past 15 years and never wore a helmet for the first 8 years. I now have my own helmet. And I made sure it even has MIPS.

You can be as cautious as you want and never make a mistake, but if someone else skies into you you could still smash your head very hard. That's why you should wear a helmet. Not because of your own capabilities, but because of the capabilities of the people around you and the risk just being too high.

I wouldn't wear a helmet while cycling though. It's quite safe in The Netherlands.

iruoy··on Pedal Me bans staff riders from wearing helmets for safety reasons
I think most people will disagree with you on how big of an inconvenience a helmet is. At least I will.

In Europe most people didn't even wear helmets when they went skiing (on-piste) until a few years ago. Now pretty much everyone does, but it's one more thing you'll carry with you everywhere you go. And on warm days I sometimes have to take my helmet off in the gondola because it gets very warm.

iruoy··on Pedal Me bans staff riders from wearing helmets for safety reasons
I am a Dutch cyclist and almost got a ticket for not wearing a helmet while under 18 (I was 16 or 17) in San Francisco. The policewoman was nice, though, and let me go.

Keeping in mind that American drivers aren't used to cyclists, it wasn't that bad in my (minimal) experience. But, of course, bikes are a little more prevalent there so that this experience won't stretch too far land inwards.

iruoy··on Pedal Me bans staff riders from wearing helmets for safety reasons
I live in a small city and have cycled to school since I was 6 years old. At first with a parent, but from about 9 years old I would cycle by myself. I have never seen anyone wear a helmet in that time.
iruoy··on DigitalOcean: New $4 Droplet and updated pricing
I wouldn't run anything too important on OVH. It is cheap though.

iruoy··on Bzip3 – A better and stronger spiritual successor to bzip2
So bzip2 and bzip3 focus on compressed size, lz4 on compression speed and zstd on decompression speed?
iruoy··on Web color is still broken
I just found out that `lch()`, `lab()`, `oklch()` and `oklab()` are already supported in Safari (stable)[1].

The normal versions have a white point of 50 and the ok versions have a white point of 65, which is the same as sRGB[2].

iruoy··on Postico: A Modern PostgreSQL Client for the Mac
At work I use SQLyog, but only for the copy database feature. It is able to copy a database from a server to my laptop much faster than dumping and importing can. Is there any other application that can do this?
iruoy··on Master Styles – The First Virtual CSS Engine
Essentially they're moving the compile step of Tailwind to the browser. On each page load. For no benefit.
iruoy··on Master Styles – The First Virtual CSS Engine
This is what I thought at first too. But this runs in javascript for some reason.

I see no reason for such a thing and the website doesn't explain why either. If you go to the Why page they're only boasting about their syntax.

iruoy··on F-Droid Is Unreachable
http://fastly.fdroidgoes.live seems to work better than both Cloudflare links. This is from the same GitLab issue.
iruoy··on Hoppscotch: Open-source alternative to Postman
I got access to this today. They basically started to recreate Hoppscotch (https://httpie.io/app) and then packaged it as an electron app. Hoppscotch has a lot more features though.

I still recommend Insomnia or maybe Paw.

iruoy··on Dutch antitrust authority fines Apple for fifth time
Just paying the fine doesn't allow them to keep the status quo.

This is a nice article [1] about what the ACM is asking for and why Apple is making an effort to comply.

Also, this lawsuit is for dating apps specifically, but should pave the way for other categories to follow right?

iruoy··on Twitter Home made me miserable
I've noticed Drew Devault still does this. https://git.sr.ht/~sircmpwn/openring
iruoy··on In MySQL, use “utf8mb4” instead of “utf8” (2016)
Postgres doesn't have a way to change the order of columns. Of course you could make a view, but my code doesn't use a view and I don't really want to make one just for when I want to check the database.
iruoy··on Linux Kernel RNG is now Blake2 instead of SHA1 and 3x faster
BLAKE3 is written in Rust wile BLAKE2s is written in C. That is probably a lot easier to push through.

It also seems to be almost as fast according to the BLAKE3 specs PDF (page 11).
