irq-1··on Show HN: I open-sourced my AI toy company that runs on ESP32 and OpenAI realtime
> This equates to approximately $0.06 per minute of audio input and $0.24 per minute of audio output.

https://openai.com/index/introducing-the-realtime-api/

About the nextjs site, I was thinking maybe its difficult to have supabase hold long connections, or route the response? I'm curious too.

irq-1··on Is it possible to write plain C iOS app in 2025?
I agree. https://tauri.app/start/prerequisites/

> Tauri requires various system dependencies for development on Linux. These may be different depending on your distribution ...

> WebView 2 is already installed on Windows 10 (from version 1803 onward) ...

> iOS development requires Xcode and is only available on macOS.

irq-1··on Intel sells 51% stake in Altera to private equity firm on a $8.75B valuation
They're competitive on perf/watt because they're designed to do one thing. But they're much more expensive than an ASIC, which, if also designed to do one thing would be better than the FPGA.
irq-1··on Gmail E2E is as terrible as expected
> The user's mail agent is deemed untrustworthy (and so is the user)

Bluesky follows this pattern for the benefit of the user. The internet tradition has always been: if you want to control it, you have to host it.

irq-1··on New in Gmail: Making E2E encrypted emails easy to use for all organizations
https://support.google.com/a/answer/14309952

> Users with a consumer Google Account (such as Gmail users) can't access client-side encrypted content, send encrypted email, or participate in client-side encrypted meetings.

> To view or edit client-side encrypted content, users must use either the Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge (Chromium) browser.

irq-1··on I stopped everything and started writing C again
Odin has this too:

> Odin is a manual memory management based language. This means that Odin programmers must manage their own memory, allocations, and tracking. To aid with memory management, Odin has huge support for custom allocators, especially through the implicit context system.

irq-1··on Robust Wavefront OBJ model parsing in C
Isn't there a common convention with vertex colors, where the color is just listed after the vertex?

irq-1··on How Clay's UI Layout Algorithm Works [video]
Clay (short for C Layout) is a high performance 2D UI layout library.

irq-1··on Ask HN: Are you a 40-year old software engineer without a job for > 1 year?
I was thinking of part-time work with unlimited time off: no expectations of normal working hours, or taking multiple months off. But you're right about time-off/sick days when the expectation is working a regular, full time job.

*! I was also assuming half the pay, but didn't write that either...

irq-1··on Ask HN: Are you a 40-year old software engineer without a job for > 1 year?
The best way to harness this is to offer what companies don't: unlimited time off, no return-to-office, health insurance and savings plans that don't kick-back to the company, flat(ter) management, no all-hands meetings...
irq-1··on A terms of use and updated privacy notice for Firefox

irq-1··on Hydro: Distributed Programming Framework for Rust
Interesting.

> Good Commandment 3. Thou shalt limit the duration of a center. ...

> To hit home runs, it’s wise to have many at bats. ...

> It’s hard to predict information technology trends much longer than five years. ...

> US Graduate student lifetimes are about five years. ...

> You need a decade after a center finishes to judge if it was a home run. Just 8 of the 12 centers in Table I are old enough, and only 3 of them—RISC, RAID, and the Network of Workstations center—could be considered home runs. If slugging .375 is good, then I’m glad that I had many 5-‐year centers rather than fewer long ones.

(Network of Workstations > Google)

irq-1··on Mathesar – an intutive spreadsheet-like interface to Postgres data
> ... spreadsheet-like UI for non-technical users who know anything about SQL or DB concepts.

All the language is DB: it's tables not spreadsheets, records not rows, etc... It also doesn't hide things like 'schema' button or metadata like table description.

Maybe this project could do things like integrations with web services, easy actions on groups (like paste a list of ids and do something to all those records), and publicly available web pages (surveys, donations, pretty event pages.)

irq-1··on Show HN: Check if your website's images have alt text
Surprised that AI text generation wasn't the point.

irq-1··on Aegisub 3.4 – Open-Source Subtitle Editor

irq-1··on Amazon workers to strike at multiple US warehouses during busy holiday season
(off topic) I was thinking today about how robots should throw packages to each other. It'd be faster and it's all the things robots are great at: hand-eye coordination, weight and holding angle, and group coordination.
irq-1··on The withering dream of a cheap American electric car
> CEF has financed and developed 6.9MW (~$16M) of low-income-accessible community solar arrays that ... offsets the utility bills of over 700 Minnesota households for the next 25 years

$16M for 700 homes = $22,857.14/home

That's not an investment, it's just charity by other means.

irq-1··on Wren
https://wren.io/

Wren is a small, fast, class-based concurrent scripting language

Think Smalltalk in a Lua-sized package with a dash of Erlang and wrapped up in a familiar, modern syntax.

irq-1··on US Senate to Revive Software Patents with PERA Bill Vote on Thursday
So we'll have software patents with brainfuck code. https://brainfuck.org/
irq-1··on Is Intel too big to fail? US officials are considering government intervention
AMD got down under $2. INTC is at $23 and the company is worth $100B.
irq-1··on Colorado scrambles to change voting-system passwords after accidental leak
Scanned paper ballots are changed all the time -- the manufacturer doesn't know that row 2 option 1 is a particular candidate. Authorities aren't stupid and know to change the ballots and test the machines.

Teachers and students understand how this all works, so it has a lot of trust.

irq-1··on Google's TOS doesn't eliminate a user's Fourth Amendment rights, judge rules [pdf]
> Party A discovers very high probability evidence that Party B is committing crimes within the property ...

This isn't accurate: the hashes were purposefully compared to a specific list. They didn't happen to notice it, they looked specifically for it.

And of course, what happens when it's a different list?

irq-1··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (October 2024)
Had a similar idea focused on old pictures. Think of older family members going through a box of photos and explaining who, when, where, etc...
irq-1··on We're forking Flutter
The build process for skia and its dependencies is huge. Flutter compiles (on windows) with CMake and Skia uses googles GN tool.

https://skia.org/docs/user/build/

https://gn.googlesource.com/gn

irq-1··on We're forking Flutter
> ...the Flutter team is in maintenance mode for 3 of its 6 supported platforms. Desktop is quite possibly the greatest untapped value for Flutter, but it's now mostly stagnant.

Can you make any comment on this? Is it accurate?
