irontinkerer··on Do I Need Kubernetes?
> To make a cluster useful for the average workload a menagerie of add-ons will be required. Some of them almost everyone uses, others are somewhat niche.

This is the concern I have with k8s. All this complexity introduces operational and security concerns, while adding more work to do before you can just deploy business value (compared to launching on standard auto-scaling cloud instances)

irontinkerer··on Report: Most Americans have no real choice in internet providers
Perhaps that now we are work-from-home for so long, there’s a new compelling legal argument for regulating them a utility?
irontinkerer··on California ban on high-capacity magazines is overturned by federal appeals court
> We fought for more federal control and got it.

That's not a really accurate portrayal of events. Federalism may have increased as an outcome, but that was not why the war started, nor why the Union-aligned states continued to fight for several years despite losses

irontinkerer··on NJ Supreme Court: No 5th Amendment right not to unlock your phone
I have too. Staring at my keyboard in complete disbelief that a password I used hours before had fallen out of my head. Still amazes me that I can forget things so easily
irontinkerer··on That UPS you bought for your home server may not be as useful as you think
“ the P-51H Mustang was rated at 1,380 hp, but WEP would deliver up to 2,218 hp”

Wow!

irontinkerer··on Why is this idiot running my engineering org?
Holding back? She names her employer and her boss yet doesn’t give anything concrete, but feels okay to call him an “idiot” in the title?
irontinkerer··on Overcoming Us vs. Them (2017)
The title is "Why Your Brain Hates Other People" not "Overcoming Us vs. Them".
irontinkerer··on An Introduction to Godel's Theorems (Second Edition) [pdf]
Per the end of your article, have you started writing about the 2nd theorem yet?
irontinkerer··on An Introduction to Godel's Theorems (Second Edition) [pdf]
402 pages is one incredible introduction!!

Godel’s theorems are fun to study though. What other theorems have equally blown your mind?

irontinkerer··on Classic Google Sites shutting down by September 2021
Sounds good, but I don’t know a lot of “active” Google Sites admins. Is Google going to offer a searchable cache? When I google search a hard question, many times I’m brought to Google Sits

We’re going to lose a valuable source of old data if former admins don’t show up, do the work, and rehost

irontinkerer··on Retrospectively assessed chances of loss of the space shuttle
This is the direct link to the image, but I got the title " Retrospectively assessed chances of loss of the space shuttle following each launch" from the source page
irontinkerer··on The Math of Card Shuffling (2018)
> equiprobably

I thought you made up that word, but you didn't! Thanks for teaching me somethign new!

> e·qui·prob·a·ble

> (of two or more things) equally likely to occur; having equal probability.

irontinkerer··on Latest Firefox rolls out Enhanced Tracking Protection 2.0
I've had the same experience! Well sort of, I think it's related to the experimental zoom I enabled. Trying to track down how to reproduce so I can open a bug, but it's sporadic for me. Other than that, I'm pretty happy with the browser
irontinkerer··on Twitter Hack Zoom Court Hearing Interrupted by Zoombombers
Reading the article felt like a flashback to Lulzsec news stories from 2011
irontinkerer··on Westinghouse Files for Bankruptcy, in Blow to Nuclear Power (2017)
I am not really familiar with the space, so please pardon the stupid question..

Why can't we use an affordable safe/competent reactor design from 30-40 years ago, and stamp that out at scale, rather than building a "new" model that results in failure?

irontinkerer··on Some Fundamental Theorems in Mathematics (2019) [pdf]
> Mathematics is a tool to practice our hobbies .. see Feynman‘s biography

I think pointing to a math/physics expert's life story to defend your premise is a bit of a circular reasoning

irontinkerer··on Concepts – Laws, Principles, Mental Models, Cognitive Biases
The set of "mental models" here isn't very well curated. They seem more like clever quotes than mental models, and it's curation seems less organized/thoughtful compared to the list of laws described above it.
irontinkerer··on The Truth Is Paywalled but the Lies Are Free
> IMHO dismissing/criticising a rather lengthy article just on one less-than-ideal example is not really good form.

I actually up-voted the article, and started reading, then removed my up-vote when I realized the very first article linked contradicts the entire headline. If the headline is true, the author could have picked dozens of other links of obvious lies, but clearly didn't attempt to validate their own work

irontinkerer··on The Truth Is Paywalled but the Lies Are Free
The first link in the article is not a "lie".

"Portland Protesters Burn Bibles, American Flags In The Streets" has a RT video that shows exactly that, and links to several other confirmed Twitter accounts all stating the same thing.

How is that a lie?

irontinkerer··on NASA Astronauts in SpaceX Capsule Make First Water Landing Since 1975
> They've fortified their immune systems by huffing bath salts and committing acts of cannibalism.

That was one person, 10 years ago.

> It's baffling watching commentators describing the dangerously elevated levels of nitrogen tetroxide juxtaposed with the crew members wandering around in short sleeves.

And don't forget the cotton masks!

irontinkerer··on NASA Astronauts in SpaceX Capsule Make First Water Landing Since 1975
> Seems main reason was political advertising

How do you get from 1 of ~20 boats waving a flag to "main reason"?

irontinkerer··on Samsung to halt production at its last computer factory in China
> What did that entail? Details welcomed!

Yes, I would love to read a detailed article about what this entails

irontinkerer··on Show HN: Tired of reading NerdWallet to see the best credit card? I automated it
So now I need to register an account to see it? That seems like a bigger hurdle.

Nice landing page though!

irontinkerer··on Spies can eavesdrop by watching a light bulb's vibrations
I was expecting to be dissapointed (I thought this was going to be a test in the same room, with perfectly calibrated equipment) but I was wrong. Very impressive that you can do this at that distance and with affordable ($400) equipment. I wonder how long intelligence agencies have been using this capability.
irontinkerer··on Apache Arrow 1.0
And it has a broad-level of support through it's libraries!

"Libraries are available for C, C++, C#, Go, Java, JavaScript, MATLAB, Python, R, Ruby, and Rust."
