ironhaven··on A draft of the "tiny corp master plan"
This plan assumes that if you build a high quality machine learning framework all hardware becomes interchangeable and you can build a “infinitely scalable“ cloud. Bold
ironhaven··on A four year plan for async Rust
block_on is a executor that polls a future until it returns ready. If the future is not ready then the executor wait until it is woken up. If you poll a future that relies on a specific runtime (I.g. A async library that uses Tokio) to wake up the executor, with a simple block_on you will get stuck.

A generic block_on in std would be a footgun for new programmers I believe.

It seems like the World Energy Outlook report the fossil fuel industry gets a lot of airtime. In the 2018 report[1] most of the sections are dedicated to oil and gas topic and the section on renewables is very skeptical on the viability of renewables.

ironhaven··on Meta releases Intermediate Graphics Library
I hope this is a easy to use high level library that wraps Vulkan apis. That would help solve one big complaint that Vulkan is too low level for normal programmers.
ironhaven··on Experiencing decreased performance with ChatGPT-4
I wonder with OpenAI patching jailbreaks they must do that by making the ChatGPT prompt larger. With a larger prompt I would assume that ChatGPT must require more attention on not being jailbroken and less on logic or producing the best output.
ironhaven··on Speedup from switch to +=
Because of operator overloading "+=" can call a more optimized method than "+". If this code was written in a language without operator overloading I don't think this would be a very interesting pull request. THis could be a example of why some people don't like operator overloading and why some programing languages (java, zig, etc) do not implment the feature.
ironhaven··on Invisible XML is a language for describing the implicit structure of data
> Invisible XML (ixml) is a method for treating non-XML documents as if they were XML, > enabling authors to write documents and data in a format they prefer while providing XML for processes that are more effective with XML content.

Interesting although this seems a little out of date because xml seems to one of the least desirable data formats for modern programming languages. Maybe this is more useful for legacy enterprise use cases that I don’t know about.

ironhaven··on Mosquitoes kill more than 700k people every year (2017)
Well... cars are the dominant species on the planet so it makes sense not to count them as human caused deaths.
ironhaven··on ‘This game is so realistic it feels just like working overtime’
A great game I played that has a "Shocking game mechanic that teaches you something", is called Rebel Inc.[0] The game is basically a sandbox inspired by the war in Afghanistan. One of the mechanics is in order to win battles on the map, you need airstrikes in order to gain ground. The downside to more airstrikes is that it leads to civilian casualties. You are basically given a choice between fewer airstrikes or more airstrikes and covering up any civilian casualties.

ironhaven··on Play Half-Life in the Browser
If you want try out some real gameplay, before you launch select "hazardcourse" in the dropdown menu and click "new game" from the in-game main menu.
ironhaven··on Linux kernel heap buffer overflow in fs_context.c since version 5.1
I think this bug would not have been exploitable in rust. Rust would not catch the integer underflow, but the exploit was only possible because of memcpy.

You can line for line rewrite the code with unsafe rust and get the same exploit with a bad memcpy[1]. But this code would never have used unsafe rust.

The method that was exploited was "append user supplied strings to the end of a string". This can easily be written in safe rust, a thousand different ways. Here is one way it could have been written.

write!(&mut heapblockstring, ",{}={}\0", key, string).unwrap();

If this was the code in the kernel, you would have gotten an intentional crash and not privilege escalation

ironhaven··on English++ Project (2008)
As i was browsing the page i looked at the listing section and I was confused where the audio clips where. After opening inspect element it looks like the page requires Flash to play the clips. This shows how old this project and is a example of a piece of the web no longer available with the deprecation of Adobe Flash.

On the bright side Flash is just being used as a player for static mp3's referenced in the HTML, so you can just open the files by yourself.

ironhaven··on Cloudflare TV
Something similar to this is Game Done Quick[1] which is a week long speed running competition. Because it is always streaming you can turn it on and see what game is being played. I would look at the schedule and make plans. "better tune in Wednesday because they are playing brood war".

I might tune in to this "Cloudflare TV". Also when i was watching the best of video on bots there was a error saying "Quota exceeded". Not sure why that popped up.
