iron_ball··on The latest chapter for the self-driving car: mastering city street driving
As a sometime cyclist, I agree that cyclists should abide by traffic laws. I assume this was downvoted for tone. The premise is undeniable. Bicycles should obey the laws. Greater rule adherence means a more predictable, and thus safer, street.
iron_ball··on Dropbox acquires Hackpad (YC W12)
Never seems to be.
iron_ball··on Evicted in San Francisco
Even the most obvious of sarcasm is poorly adapted to the comments section of Hacker News.
iron_ball··on The Engineer Crunch
And as for remote work?
iron_ball··on Ask HN: What's your speciality, and what's your "FizzBuzz" equivalent?
Follow-up question: "Should you?"
iron_ball··on Korea Execution Is Tied to Clash Over Businesses
Well, I agree. First, North Korea would have to allow foreign journalism. Right now, as I understand it, a North Korean contact who was known to be "cultivated" by a foreign journalist would be hauled up on charges of espionage and treason.
iron_ball··on Shit programmers write
I'm assuming they could have just used a well-known and well-tested library.
iron_ball··on Homeless turn overnight bus route into Hotel 22
Edit: replaced snarky response with this.

It's not just startups -- businesses tend to focus on earning money. I don't know if we can realistically expect private industry to take an interest in social or economic problems. At the lowest level, there are founders trying to choose a niche that gets them from debt to break-even as quickly as possible; at the highest level, you get into transnational corporations which act only in their own interest.

I would be happy if Apple or Google were to dump their excess billions into social welfare or government reform, but it is vanishingly unlikely.

iron_ball··on FeelBetterBot wants you to feel better
Spoiler: there are like six books where _nothing ever happens at all ever_. Enjoy!

iron_ball··on First Mechanical Gear Found in a Living Creature
Absolutely. Christianity is just one possible frame.
iron_ball··on First Mechanical Gear Found in a Living Creature
God cannot feel pride, for that would imply the possibility of failure. God is beyond most human emotions, probably all, for that reason: our emotions imply their opposites, while for God, there are no alternatives other than what is -- which is by definition perfect.

Mind you, I'm an atheist, so this is just my understanding of the argument.

iron_ball··on Ask HN: Most comfortable keyboard?
The Microsoft Natural is my pick. Split enough for ergonomics, good key response, not very expensive.

iron_ball··on Is this what it’s supposed to feel like?
Sole OP response in a thread full of questions.
iron_ball··on tmux 1.8 Released
Ruby users may also be interested in adding pry to that setup: http://www.alanmacdougall.com/blog/2012/03/27/using-vim-slim... (disclosure: my own blog)
iron_ball··on Lousy web design trends that are making a comeback due to HTML5
On the other hand, most of this rogues' gallery is digital agencies or sites made by digital agencies. Sadly, those businesses market to unsophisticated customers on the basis of flash and dazzle, and usually any attempt at user advocacy is met with requests for flash and dazzle. The target audience of this kind of site is not the end user who visits the site; it's the manager who signs off on the invoice. Those managers very seldom have long-term engagement growth as an evaluation metric.
iron_ball··on Bootstrap 2.3 Released
I really want the term "kebab-case" to catch on.
iron_ball··on Gabe Newell's vision for Steam: More choice, more democracy, less Greenlight
Nice to see an Old Man Murray shoutout. Last I heard, one of the writers of that site and other web classics was working at Valve, so maybe some of the wit and wisdom can live on.
iron_ball··on MoMA Adds Video Games to Its Collection
I love Dwarf Fortress, but I would not characterize it as "playable."
iron_ball··on Things I didn’t know about the WebKit inspector
Charles (www.charlesproxy.com) makes this kind of thing pretty easy. Well worth the money, in my book.
iron_ball··on Yes, I was hacked. Hard.
Well, honestly, why should it be necessary?
iron_ball··on Facebook sinks to record low, 43% below IPO price, as doubts grow
I live in New York, which has one of the best public transit systems in the US, and I think driverless cars are freaking amazing, even (or especially) in the context of a city with effective public transit. For one thing, they could solve the last-mile problem public transit has at its outer limits.
iron_ball··on Some things I've learnt about programming
You imply that those who find fault with the studies are acting from "religious" motives instead of good faith. I don't find that suggestion constructive. Can you defend the substance of the studies to the extent that others are attacking it?
iron_ball··on Preparing Yourself for Modern JavaScript Development
What's specifically wrong with RequireJS? I haven't heard much discussion of it, and you only addressed Browserify in your comment.
iron_ball··on ACLU launches phone app to help motorists secretly record police stops
You can use that as a buffalo sentence: police police police police police police police.

iron_ball··on Handy text manipulation tricks in Sublime Text 2
jEdit has had this feature for a long time. It's one thing I miss, having moved to Vim.
iron_ball··on How to program like an explorer (with Pry).
If you want your Pry experience to be even more SLIME-like, try combining it with vim and tmux. You can write code in vim, and send arbitrary lines or blocks to the terminal for seamless execution. This has changed how I do a lot of things, not just Pry: it's really handy for putting together bash scripts, for example.

iron_ball··on Customizing the Mac to behave like Xmonad
Counter-anecdote: I have a T520 and I'm perfectly happy with it. Get the full HD screen, it's worth it. I admit that I'd prefer the old 4:3 screen size, but that's just not the way of the world anymore.
iron_ball··on Valve hired their first wave of Linux developers, hiring more
I love Linux for general hacking, but not having Adobe tools is a huge blow when it comes to working on a design. It's almost insurmountable.
iron_ball··on Show HN: Underscore.js for Objective-C
