irishloop··on Switching to an N95 mask gives a 75x boost in Covid protection
But risk isn't a 1/0 binary. Every moment you are wearing a mask changes your risk. Spending 1 hour in a restaurant vs 10 hours in a restaurant. It all adds up and it all matters.

So yeah, taking your mask off while you eat is definitely going to raise your risk. But not as much as simply not wearing a mask the entire time you're in a restaurant, moving around, getting closer to people and different areas of the restaurant, which probably all have variable particles in the air, etc.

irishloop··on Ketamine therapy is going mainstream
I spent quite a bit of my late adolescence consuming mind-altering substances like LSD and mushrooms. It did expand my mind and made me appreciate certain things.

But it did not fix my depression or make me feel less alone. I might feel connected to the universe -- for a time. But it eventually fades, and the old demons come back.

Sooner or later, you need to deal with the issues at hand. The reason you feel this way.

For me, going to therapy allowed me to address some of the root issues -- generational trauma, a lack of affection, perhaps chemicals in my brain -- and allowed me to start rewriting my story of myself.

I enjoyed my experiments with psychedelics, and I would not discourage anyone from using them. But they are not the cure-all many claim, either.

irishloop··on A Review of “The Man Who Solved the Market”
Even if all of this is true, it doesn't disprove the existence of autism as a legitimate disability or diagnosis.
irishloop··on I would like closure, but I'll take honesty
I don't know, if you hear about the accounts of the parents of children killed in Sandy Hook, I don't think inner peace was available. Many had to move or go into hiding. Imagine, after losing a child in such a horrific way, that you also need to somehow start an entirely new life in a strange place because strangers think you're a crisis actor and threaten your life.

Externalities matter.

irishloop··on California plans to turn the screws on NIMBY cities
But you can build higher density housing which increases the overall number of living units in a region, thus increasing the supply.
irishloop··on How to make a CPU – a simple picture-based explanation
At the public university engineering program I attended in 2000ish (UConn), we offered CompSci (mostly software focused), CompEng (mostly hardware focused), and CompSci+Eng (a balance of both). Either Eng program included several courses on hardware-level EE courses and circuit design, hardware engineering, etc.

One of the guys I did my senior design project with ended up working with AMD on processor stuff, so there are educational opportunities, I think you just need to be more on the CompEng/EE side of things and make it your focus.

irishloop··on Senators move to exempt Bitcoin, crypto miners from proposed U.S. tax rules
But the IRS needs a mechanism to understand and interpret these ledgers, right? And the IRS enforcement is only as good as the people who are doing the enforcing.

I'm an engineer and I barely understand crypto, what hope does an IRS auditor have?

irishloop··on Twitter confirms Twitter Blue
I don't know I see a lot of great stuff from comedians and stuff on twitter posting all kind of shit. I enjoy the silliness, but my feed is definitely highly curated and even then I end up seeing toxic takes because people "like" the takes that I follow.

However, some of my absolute favorite twitter accounts post a lot. To each their own. I don't have to hit the button.

irishloop··on Twitter confirms Twitter Blue
Yeah they tend to show stuff that is "liked" by people you know. So it depends on what THEY like as well.
irishloop··on VW Will Sell You Self-Driving for $8.50/Hour Someday. Too High or Too Low?
Is it needless? Right now car ownership has a lot of extra costs for your normal, middle-class American

* Car payment * Insurance payment * Maintenance costs * Parking costs * Possible tolls * Repairs * Possibly roadside assistance * Property tax (in some jurisdictions)

These are all costs of ownership. For people who own very cheap cars, or who can afford to pay cash for cars, it may be costly, but for many others, it may, in fact, streamline quite a few costs that they're already absorbing and managing.

irishloop··on Red Flags I Saw While Doing 60 Technical Interviews in 30 Days
Yeah I think your last sentence nails the reverse issue here: The expectation from companies to put in excessive amounts of work which from all candidates when most all of them will get no return on that effort (other than Experience™).

My hope is that most of us are somewhere in the middle: Neither excessively applying to 60+ companies, nor being asked to do several days' worth of labor for a limited opportunity.

irishloop··on Regular afternoon naps linked to improved cognitive function
I have a very difficult time falling asleep if I know I have to wake up shortly.
irishloop··on What Silicon Valley gets about engineers that traditional companies do not
My guess is that if developers understood the business, they would understand how simplistic a lot of the business models are, and how much of the profit is derived directly from their skilled labor and yet how much of the profit goes directly towards someone else, and developers would suddenly realize they have leverage because they are essentially the profit model.
irishloop··on MasterCard to stop processing payments on Pornhub, cites unlawful content
Since users are essentially allowed to upload their own videos, and Section 230 prevents online distributors from being held liable for the content produced on their site, they aren't doing anything illegal by hosting these videos depicting underage women or sexual assault.

Sometimes the only way to force a company to change is to use the market to force them to change. Attack their advertisers or payment processors and force them to do something.

irishloop··on Shared salary spreadsheet reveals Microsoft employee earnings for a second year
Plus you know less destroying the world
irishloop··on Kindle collects a surprisingly large amount of data
I've actually found it quite challenging to purchase books to put on my Kindle that aren't from Amazon, since they use a proprietary format.
irishloop··on Being OK with not being extraordinary
It's not a hang up if you can't pay your bills or afford to take a vacation once in a while. Mazlow's Hierarchy of Needs does require us to meet some basic needs regardless of our passions.

Even if you are an extraordinary woodworker, if you can barely meet rent, you are unlikely to find any happiness due to the stress you will need to manage day-to-day.

irishloop··on I trick my well-developed procrastination skills
If the system is working for you...
irishloop··on We’re working on 1M Covid-19 testing capacity per day
It's only tenfold if they all test negative, right? Otherwise you need to test subgroups to find out which test(s) were positive. So the real speedup is probably something like 2x-4x, depending on infection rates.
irishloop··on Cryptocurrencies Are Detrimental to Society
While I'm not a fan of reality TV, I know plenty of people who are, and whose lives are enriched because of reality television. There is no accounting for taste.

I don't know how much people's lives are enriched by cryptocurrency. Other than the people directly involved in mining and speculating on it.

irishloop··on Tips for the depressed
I don't know if it's me but having dealt with depression most of my life, I find "happy" music irritating and grating. Pharrell's "Happy" has to be one of the worst songs I've ever heard in my life.

Sad music tends to be more beautiful to me but I don't know that it necessarily affects my mood. But I could be wrong.

Either way though happy music is not happening.

irishloop··on Becoming a high performing software developer working from your bedroom
The author's spelling of "NetFlix" bothered me a lot more than it should.
irishloop··on The Hottest New Thing in Seasteading Is Land
That's all well and good but it seems to me all of these "new" forms of organization are essentially to benefit the ultra-rich at the expense of everyone else. There is nothing here that will help working-class people, and instead, seems to seek to abandon them.
irishloop··on Downsides to working at a tech giant
Oh for sure. I think the point is, any of these moves is an inherent risk. For every Apple or PayPal there are a thousand startups which fail.

Knowing which will succeed and which will fail is sort of the whole caveat. You can't know the future when you make these decisions.

irishloop··on Google chief: I'd disclose smart speakers before guests enter my home
I know it puts me in the minority, but I honestly do not care that much. It's obfuscation by volume.

If Google wants to hear me and my roommate argue about Red Dead Redemption online or the new Bill Burr comedy special, good luck with that.

When I worked in IT, people always used to say oh you can read my emails? Nobody wants to read about your boring-ass life.

My understanding is they are using our speech to create better speech-recognition and it shows. I have much better luck with OK Google than Siri. I willingly give up my privacy for a superior product because most of my conversations are inane.

And if I ever intend to murder anyone, I will turn off Alexa.

irishloop··on Ocean plastic waste probably comes from ships, report says
My guess is Greta focuses on people who can actually be influenced. Americans have access to a free press and information about how we use our energy or pollute. And being the richest nation in the world, we certainly have some responsibility for how we live our lives and the effects it has on the Earth.

Communicating with China and having the ability to effectively influence their policy is a much more difficult task.

irishloop··on Singapore Says Musk's Electric Cars Are About 'Lifestyle,' Not Climate
All of these cars use precious metals and resources which come from (probably) China who pollutes like hell to get them so who knows what the long-term ramifications are.
irishloop··on Learning to Read in Your 30s Profoundly Transforms the Brain
Intuitively it would make sense to me that they both provide advantages to the mind. Certainly, being able to parse dense technical literature is impressive, but the ability to use the imagination and think creatively would probably use different parts of the mind, and I'd think the "best" minds could do both.

Wasn't it said that Einstein kind of came up with the whole idea about relativity based on the imagined idea of "riding" a beam of light or something like that?

irishloop··on Alex Stamos: Asking tech companies to police hate speech is “a dangerous path”
Speech can absolutely be dangerous. Much of the run-up to the Holocaust was in dehumanizing and characterizing the Jews as money-sucking leeches bleeding Germany dry.
irishloop··on Amazon's Alexa now at Marriott hotels
I know it's of little solace to many, but the truth is, I mostly feel safe in knowing that whoever is collecting data on me, I'm not really worth spying on.
