ioulian··on Best-selling Zigbee temperature sensors tested and compared
Ah, I've read what the problem is (90% sure).

Aqara sensors use zigbee, but NOT the full protocol, like Ikea ones for example. So they work fine, until they lose a connection to a router. Zigbee protocol dictates that it will need to try connecting to another router, but aqara does not.

I have a lot of these sensors in my home, normally the connection is fine (5+ years) but sometimes I lose one. Because somebody turned off the lamp (ikea one, acting as a router) (by cutting the electricity to it) by mistake. Then, the connection is lost to that router and it will not try to reconnect.

When the router does not switch, the connection stays. I don't even need to re-pair when changing the batteries!

I've read this somewhere, take it with a grain of salt and validate it yourself if possible.

ioulian··on Slack has raised our charges by $195k per year
> Also, if the data in chat is being held hostage, the org might be using chat wrong.

This is so important these days. A lot of project send users to discord, slack for documentation and help but they are not made for this purpose. Searching in chat channel for a specific problem is not a good way to handle documentation. I can't even use search engines to search that.

ioulian··on Total lunar eclipse over Teide crater, Tenerife – a project with many obstacles
I hear a lot of astrophotographers take many short-exposure (5-10s) photos and then stich them together in POST. Missing 1 of possible 100 photos in OK I think?

Keeping in mind that you photographing a specific thing in the sky, not the startrails, as missing a frame will be very visible there.

ioulian··on Why my apps will soon be gone from the Google Play Store
Can't thank you enough for photopea. Very good (and impressive) job that you've done with it! It's very useful as a frontend developer that wants to quickly edit an image!

Great, thanks!

A bit off topic, but I was interested in Nvidia Shield but I have an (5.1) amplifier hooked on my TV with Optical Cable. As I understood, Shield doesn't have any Optical out. Is it possible to connect Shield to TV and let TV (LG with WebOS) pass audio through optical to the amplifier?

My amplifier is quite old, so it doesn't have HDMI in or something.

ioulian··on Buggy animation in Atlassian Bitbucket is wasting half a CPU core at all times
You are right, this would not cause layout to recalculate, only repaint. And propably repaint only a section of the screen, not the whole window.
ioulian··on Buggy animation in Atlassian Bitbucket is wasting half a CPU core at all times
Strange to see this, as the animation should NOT trigger a layout recalculation (transform is done on it's own "layer", is GPU accelerated and that's why it's more performant).

The article mentions "The computer is doing a lot more work and recomputing the layout of the entire page.", but it's not true. As you see in his example, the square image is getting rotated but layout of the table does not change (the image clips out the table), so no layout recalculation is done.

So the "bug", must be somewhere else?

ioulian··on The `hanging-punctuation property` in CSS
ah yes, jQuery. Indeed hide()/show() just set css to display: none/block, but it can vary (inline/flex/...).

CSS is a bit of a mess the last few years, with so many caveats... Just look at why position sticky will sometimes not work: "If you are trying to use position: sticky and it is not working, it is because one of the elements wrapping it is using overflow with a value of hidden, auto or scroll."[1]

But it's weird, it should work, or at least this should be documented somewhere. Also why should overflow: hidden break the functionality... If you know all the caveats of css, then you can safely say "I know CSS".

ioulian··on The `hanging-punctuation property` in CSS
Maybe I'm missing something about your question, but:

``` .parent {display: flex; flex-direction: column;} .rest {flex-grow: 1; overflow-y: auto;} ```
ioulian··on Air quality monitors: paying more does not get you more accuracy
For people who use Home Assistant, I've gone with DIY route with ESPHome [1] and senseair CO2 sensor. You can buy those sensors for +- 26 USD on AliExpress. Together with 5 USD, ESP32 devkit, it's mostly "solder"-n-play.
Of course, I only have one of them, so I can't say if they are accurate, but I just need to know if the CO2 levels are normal (+- 400ppm) or high (+1000ppm), to open a window. I have tested it with just blowing on it, the CO2 value jumps up, putting it near a window, goes directly to +- 400.
I haven't had any strange readings with it, ESPHome developers really made an excellent product, that is stable and "just works". You can even calibrate the sensor by putting the it outside (but I haven't really bothered with it).
ESPHome has also support for a lot of other sensors that you combine on a single ESP32 module.
ioulian··on Ask HN: Is TypeScript worth it?
You can't believe from how much bugs TypScript has saved me. When it was "first released" (when it became more popular), I have ported our starter kit to TypScript and was amazed on how much stuff it was detecting as not safe.
Since then, I can't image working without TS. As for Third Party libraries, I have a different experience from other devs here, it works very well for most (if not all) big libraries/frameworks, and the autocomplete saves me so much time in digging in the docs.
Great Job! As a developer who hates slicing emails manually (and testing them), I use only BeeFree for creating them (for at least 6 years I think). Thank you and good luck!
When I was young, I was also afraid of insects, especially flying ones. But I've read somewhere that you are afraid of animals if you don't see what they are thinking. Take for example dogs or cats, you can easily see what they are "thinking", by their movement, ears, tails...
Insects are so small that you can't see that, you don't know where they are looking, or if they are afraid or not.
Looking at macro photography of insects, you can see how they are build and the spiders (especially the jumping spiders) are quite cute. Knowing how they look and their behavioural patterns, and just reading more about them, allowed me to be less afraid of them.
Now I don't know if that is "scientifically correct", but it helped me.
ioulian··on I Will Never Use a Microsoft Account to Log Into My Own PC
I've only installed PRO versions of Windows 10 and you CAN setup a local account even if internet is plugged in. It is however, hidden behind a few clicks so you must actively search for it.
EDIT: maybe I'm wrong now, as other comment says they changed it a few months back. My last install was somewhere in Dec/2020
There is a short part of this in Black Mirror episode: Fifteen Million Merits.
ioulian··on You've only added two lines – why did that take two days?
And this reminds me about another story, I can't find the link but it was something like this:
A game developer was making a game for PlayStation and they were over their memory limit. They were approaching a deadline but couldn't remove anything else from the game to fit it in memory (or disk, I can't remember). So a senior dev came by, changes the code in 1 minute and everything could fit into memory now.
The thing was that at the start of each project, he had declared a variable of 2mb that does nothing, so when every optimisation has been done and it still doesn't fit, he could just remove that variable and free up some more space.
It was also his way of insurance.
ioulian··on The specification for native image lazy-loading is merged into HTML standard
It's not that easy. It's not always that you scroll gradually to the bottom of the page. If you click the scrollbar to the bottom, then the middle images shouldn't load. The same if you use hash navigation to the bottom.
If you refresh the page at the bottom, it will stay at the bottom, so no need to load top images.
ioulian··on Free OpenStreetMap tile library: watercolor, black and white, terrain
That is a great initiative! I just installed the app and contributed some tweaks in my area.
Also, I couldn't find any info on this matter: some quests ask you what number a house is. Wouldn't people find it strange that a random person is standing in front of your house and looking at the number and then types on their smartphone?
AFAIK house numbers are not private info, but still...
ioulian··on iPhone 11 Pro Camera Review
That's what I thought, and indeed, the full res is useful when you want to post crop and to print them out.
ioulian··on iPhone 11 Pro Camera Review
Ok, just looked at these images: https://daringfireball.net/2019/09/the_iphone_11_and_iphones... in full res and indeed, they are very blurry and the detail loss is still there:
look at the hairs of the dog: https://daringfireball.net/misc/2019/09/iphones-11-review/mo... They are all blurry
Is it possible to shoot RAW with iPhone?
ioulian··on iPhone 11 Pro Camera Review
The pictures do look good, the colors are nice and the small image on the page is nice. But I haven't seen any 100% crops or full images. it's there that you'll see that the image is worse than a DSLR or another camera with a big lens and sensor.
I can get nice pictures (= vibrant and nice colors) with any camera, what I can't get is a sharp image, with sharp edges.
I went to a trip with my Android Phone and DSLR, and my GF has an iPhone 6.
We took pictures with all 3 devices. When I looked at jpg photos from Android phone on my PC, they had all "perfect" (=vibrant and catchy) colors, but when you zoom in, it's all a blurry mess with no detail. The iPhone was nice and sharp (at least much sharper than the android pics). The DSLR was of course the sharpest one.
Now on the android phone, I have a "pro" settings that captures RAW image. And it's incredibly sharp, the colors are bland of course, but the data is there and we can add/process the colors in post. But why is the image so much worse when using JPG.
My idea it that normal jpg has HDR enabled and is being processed too much, thus losing a lot of detail. You don't get that loss when capturing RAW.
What I'm afraid is that the new iPhone dark mode (or even the P30 Pro and other phones with post processing) will also process the images too much and stack them thus losing a lot of detail. When put on instagram or made smaller for Facebook/websites, you won't see the missing details, but the colors will be vibrant and that's "good enough" for most people.
When I take a picture I rather have the real RAW data in the picture instead of processed jpg that I can't control. What do you guys think about the automatic post processing done by your device, that when done incorrectly, you'll lose a perfect picture because the implementation just lost you a lot of detail...
I guess the post processing trend is there because you just can't make a good lens and sensor that small and still have nice results. The phone makers are just trying to fix this with post processing...
ioulian··on Driving on the Autobahn
I'm from Belgium, and every time time I can I go to Germany to drive on the Autobahn. If you say there are a lot of assholes in Germany, try and drive in Belgium, nobody can drive here and everybody drives on the left and doesn't have a general idea of driver around you. For example:
When I drive in Germany on the left lane, and there are 2 lanes blocked by trucks, and another car wants to pass them on the left lane, they will see me and wait (or even break). They know I can't break that fast and will create an accident.
In Belgium, you can drive on the left lane, and somebody merges into the left lane 10 m before you and keep going 90kmh on the left lane creating a traffic jam and unnecessary breaking.
This is what I like about german drivers, they see their environment and know their (and other drivers) location in the traffic.
Also, move to the right rule, it looks like 90% of the people follow it perfectly, in Belgium everybody drives on the second lane.
Spain is the second best country I've driven in. Croatia is also fine.
We built a few small web games with phaser. It was very easy to start and also easy to finish. You can prototype with it very quickly and there are a lot of resources explaining things to you. Recommend.
