iopuy··on Ask HN: What was the best decision you made in your career?
Are you in a high cost of living area and what industry do you work in, if you don't mind sharing?
iopuy··on Show HN: Mastering Modular JavaScript
Agreed and well stated. Will definitely not be reading this as an attempt to slyly market the product is enough to turn me off. If the content is valuable it should stand on its own.
iopuy··on Ask HN: What is the best-designed software you've used?
If we are talking about UI design, in my opinion VLC falls short. I still can't figure out where the setting is to turn off the title overlay at the beginning of the video. Does anyone here know?
iopuy··on He Asked Permission to Touch, but Not to Ghost
This seems like a ridiculous anecdote that is unverifiable by anyone but the author. We even had names for these when I worked in journalism. They were called "sure it did's" because everyone was "sure, that's how it happened." Amazingly each week we had a handful of op-ed pieces or even real reporting that would open with an amazingly pertinent, often hard to believe and never verifiable slice-of-life just like this.
iopuy··on Ask HN: What does a “web content developer” do on a daily basis?
In my experience, 10-15 years ago front end developers were noticeably paid less than back end developers but not so much in today's environment.
iopuy··on Unpatched routers being used to build vast proxy army, spy on networks
mitmproxy is what you need. I've installed it on a Raspberry Pi that then acts as a hotspot. mitmproxy allows me to see every bit of data that is being put on the wire. All telemetry, pings, contacts, and more being transmitted home (respective of encryption). A transparent proxy is essential if you want to deep drive into what the apps on your network are actually doing.
iopuy··on Female, minority students took AP computer science in record numbers
Wow, that sounds like a failure of teaching to me. The exam switched from C++ to Java in roughly 2004 and then it is discontinued in 2009? Perhaps a change to the teaching methods could have been implemented before cancellation. Although I took the case via distance learning and I'm not sure that would have had any effect for someone like me.
iopuy··on The Twenty-Five Year Journey of Magic the Gathering
Necromancer, tabernacle, exsanguinate, odious... the list goes on.
iopuy··on Ask HN: What are some of the best life hacks you use?
What does your first sentence mean? English is not my first language.
iopuy··on Apologies – Startup School Acceptance Error
Sounds like a win to me, they accepted you for the Audit track! Any idea on what that track entails for office hours?
iopuy··on How we scaled Nginx
Does nginx still force you to recompile the program to get access to the web application firewall? I remember this being a sticking point years ago when evaluating the product.
iopuy··on Tom Tryniski digitized nearly 50M pages of newspapers in his living room
This guy digitizes over 50M pages for the greater good and you're calling him a failure?
iopuy··on Having Alzheimer’s at 38 (2015)
Diabetes type 3!?!?! I have never heard this but I'll sure as he'll keep this in mind now.
iopuy··on Data Structures Reference
I thought the same thing until I started doing a significant amount of code reviews. You need to know these things to explain to more junior devs to help them become better programmers.
iopuy··on Ask HN: What is the first thing you implement at a new company?
Agreed, it should be part of the standard technical on-boarding process. Once someone is familiar with what the editor is buying them in terms of productivity they are free to search for their own should they choose. A pet peeve of mine is joining a new team and asking what the editor of choice is to be told "really it is up to you."
iopuy··on Ask HN: What are the best hacks to fight depression?
I like this list, it addresses something most don't.
iopuy··on The Trouble with D3
Because the up front costs of initialization and loading data into and out of the pipeline shaders are significant. Once loaded stuff is much faster but the linked page has a pretty simple graph, not a complex 3d rendered scene. One would assume it would be faster to load a simple DOM then spin up a 3d renderer for the same amount of work.
iopuy··on The Trouble with D3
three.js is faster?? That's nuts that the gpu accelerated shader pipeline are more performant than rendering a DOM.
iopuy··on Ask HN: What's your favorite way of getting a web app up quickly in 2018?
asking the same question i've asked all js-centric responses above... how do you handle authentication?
iopuy··on Ask HN: What's your favorite way of getting a web app up quickly in 2018?
how do you handle authentication?
iopuy··on Ask HN: What's your favorite way of getting a web app up quickly in 2018?
Spoken like someone having spent sometime with passportjs.
iopuy··on Ask HN: What's your favorite way of getting a web app up quickly in 2018?
how do you handle authentication?
iopuy··on Ask HN: What's your favorite way of getting a web app up quickly in 2018?
which token auth mechanism? Always curious to hear how others secure their endpoints.
iopuy··on Block.one’s sale of its digital tokens dwarfs other coin sales
They should use the 4 billion to buy a crypto portfilio of coins with actual value. Litecoin and Ethereum would be a good start.
iopuy··on Mussels test positive for opioids in Seattle's Puget Sound
Even the mussel's personal insurance would not generally cover situations resulting from deliberate (in the insurers eyes) drug ingestion. Unless the mussel could prove it was contamination of his environment.
iopuy··on As the Web moves toward HTTPS by default, Chrome will remove “secure” indicator
Posted this in another comment but will do so again here:

A quick run down of some simple browser based extensions to give you back some semblance of privacy and security:

    1. uBlock Origin - best open source ad blocker
    2. Ghostery - stops you from being tracked as much as possible
    3. Chrome UA Spoofer - Use chrome but set the user agent to firefox, this way custom exploits target the wrong browser saving you from being pwned
    4. HTTPS Everywhere - Defualts sites to https if possible
I'd also recommend everyone pick up a copy of The Transparent Society (https://amzn.to/2Lapjw7) as it goes into depth on individual privacy and the right to access information about those in control of society.
iopuy··on Autonomous vehicles: Why Alphabet could be set to win the race
I'd be extremely surprised if Alphabet does not at some point make an announcement stunning the self driving car industry in terms of capabilities and offerings. Their tech is unmatched but kept under extremely tight wraps. As an Xoogler I'm confident within the next 12-48 months, after much regulation has been crafted does Alphabet release its creation upon the world.

iopuy··on Henrietta Lacks' Lasting Impact Detailed in New Portrait
If anyone is curious about her life and contributions to science, I'd pick up a copy of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (https://amzn.to/2rLLIHU). It touches on some pretty heavy sociological issues as well.
iopuy··on Australian regulator investigates Google data harvesting from Android phones
A known avenue of data acquisition is to wait until a wifi connections to transmit large amounts of data.
