iopq··on OCaml: a Rust developer's first impressions
ML does garbage collection, if it didn't need it it wouldn't do it.

Horizontal scrolling code does make it quite impossible for me to follow the examples

Conspiracy and conspiracy theory are not quite the same. Some things are just false claims. A conspiracy theory usually refers to something that has a semblance of consensus.

The Iraq war had a decent amount of opposition before it happened, there were like 100K people in San Francisco for the protest I went to.

iopq··on Omegle 2009-2023
I don't believe it's been conclusively proven either way.
iopq··on Omegle 2009-2023
1999 is closer to the invention of the internet than present day

TCP/IP was standardized in 1982 and commercial ISPs didn't exist until 1989

iopq··on Omegle 2009-2023
Twitter owners did not engage in promotion of conspiracy theories back then
iopq··on Omegle 2009-2023
I went online in 1999 and it was almost always online DSL, so the idiots were just as bad back then. Those that didn't have DSL had AOL which is one click to get online

Back then you could post to Craigslist for an anonymous hookup and play poker online for money.

Now the Match Group owns all the dating websites and successfully shittified them. Social media in general has been basically a big loss, with Reddit charging for API access since they don't want to lose revenues, Youtube trying to block adblockers, Twitter promoting Russian propaganda

iopq··on Copying Is Not Theft [video]
That's a huge stretch, it's some IMAGINARY losses of SOCIETY since it's impossible to know which software I would buy.

In fact, I would use open source software instead, since I'm not in the mood for paying. I use Krita now because I don't need the extra Photoshop features

iopq··on NixOS Reproducible Builds: minimal ISO successfully independently rebuilt
Sure there is, the NUR has a few thousand community packages that are not ready for release

The nixpkgs are all official packages, it's just really easy to become a maintainer (you make a pull request adding the package you want to maintain)

I've ran an online business

If we released our source code it would do absolutely nothing, since you don't have our business partners or customer base. All you could do is publish pages that look like ours

iopq··on Copying Is Not Theft [video]
What if I would never pay for it in the first place? Then I'm not depriving you of anything
iopq··on Cities Skylines 2 runs with 20fps on an Nvidia RTX4090
Apparently it makes the game feel "faster" in racing games because it adds to the movement illusion. I don't know why you would use it in other games, though

Maybe some difficult 1080p videos, but my phone can handle 30 FPS ones from what I've tested. It depends of course if you require NO dropped frames, or simply not noticeable performance degradation. I can't tell when it drops one frame out of a thousand
iopq··on Chrome Removing Theora Support
I didn't say they did it wrong, I asked a question. It wasn't a rhetorical question.

Anyway, this point might be moot because dav1d has released several versions with further NEON optimizations after the paper

Encoding on a PC is an edge case, especially on software. Just hardware encode H264 at that point

> I have been accustomed to any video playback taking just a few percents on any old computer with Intel graphics.

it's using like 160% of a hyperthreaded core, so not even completely saturating a laptop from 2015 (8 years ago) - I don't know why it needs to drop frames though (single core too slow?)

iopq··on Chrome Removing Theora Support
> it's about not eating through all of your battery before you're done watching the video

we're talking about hours of playtime before you run out of power, you can verify this on your own phone on youtube right now, go enable av1 and marvel at how YOUR phone can play these videos at 1080p

> Overall AV1 real-time playback of 720p 30fps @ 2Mbps is feasible for low-end devices with 4 threads and 1080p 30fps @ 4Mbps is feasible for high-end and mid-range devices with 4 threads using Dav1d decoder

Why only 4 threads? My phone from 2020 has 8 cores/8 threads and a 720p screen

https://www.gsmarena.com/oppo_a32-10454.php

So even if it doesn't handle some 1080p videos that I haven't tested, I should probably be watching them at 720p since that's all my phone can do.

iopq··on Chrome Removing Theora Support
That's a high end device that can chew through 4K AV1 video like no tomorrow
iopq··on Chrome Removing Theora Support
Mobile doesn't have 4K screens, any phone released in the last few years can handle 1080p or 1440p AV1

I mean ANY phone. My phone is $160 from 2019 and it can play 1440p AV1 on youtube (with a few frame drops, but nothing noticeable), even though it has a 720p screen. I'd have to get my OnePlus 3 (2016) to stutter in 1440p

note that the OnePlus 3 would stutter in h264 1440p as well, it's just old

iopq··on Chrome Removing Theora Support
Not really, my laptop is intel 5000 series dual core, it can handle 720p AV1 video. I did get a few dropped frames, but I had to go into "Stats for nerds" to see that they dropped. When I switched to vp9, I still had some dropped frames anyway, so it's slow regardless

My laptop doesn't have a 1080p screen, but trying 1080p it could do some videos better than others.

in this one I only dropped 2 frames:

Hell, it can give you a finished image
iopq··on Why Japan has blue traffic lights instead of green
They are not blue, but because the word for blue is also ambiguous they are more like a teal color
iopq··on Why Japan has blue traffic lights instead of green
Because they use 绿, not 青 so it would not result in blue lights

But in Korea they have the same confusion:

https://www.dreamstime.com/traffic-lights-road-blue-speed-li...

iopq··on Why Japan has blue traffic lights instead of green
In China, for example, the word for green 綠 is used for the light

綠 is used in Japanese for the color of green tea, but they use 青 for the green light

There's also 翠 in Japanese to mean a bright green, which in Chinese also has a blue connotation (based on the color of the kingfisher who dives 淬 to catch fish)

iopq··on Why Japan has blue traffic lights instead of green
Both come from the Chinese term 青 which in modern Chinese would by itself refer to colors anywhere between sky blue and grassy green

青天 - clear skies

青草 - green grass

清葡萄 - 청포도 - white grape

No, I'm saying I've made a logic mistake in Fizzbuzz in an interview because I forgot to put == 0 in the condition. If you think that makes me a bad programmer, that's your problem, I just don't think whiteboard interviews are representative of the pull requests I do after working for several hours on something
iopq··on Refactoring has a price, not refactoring has a cost
I made a mistake in fizzbuzz the first time I did it on a whiteboard because I wrote it in "pseudocode"

I wrote if (n % 15) print "fizzbuzz" ...

I got away with it because my interviewer assumed it was some kind of shell which means 0 is true

I should have written n % 15 == 0 to be absolutely clear what I'm doing

note that in Rust this won't even compile:

    3 |     if n % 15 {
      | ^^^^^^ expected `bool`, found integer
But I don't have the type checker to find mistakes for me when writing on a whiteboard which is not realistic. I can't commit this code because CI wouldn't merge a build failure anyway
iopq··on Refactoring has a price, not refactoring has a cost
Would you rather get someone who can do fizzbuzz correctly on a board the first time in 7 minutes or someone who can write it in 1 minute on a laptop incorrectly, test it, and fix it in 30 seconds?

I see no value in the "gotcha" of you made a logic mistake since we all make them and there's a reason why we test code

iopq··on Refactoring has a price, not refactoring has a cost
Yes, but then the refactor value is dubious. To write simple code you actually need to understand the difficulty of the problem. Why is certain code easier to talk about than other type of code? Why is it better written this way and not another way?

If you don't understand the problem enough you may hack at it in another wrong way.

iopq··on Refactoring has a price, not refactoring has a cost
Humans are very bad on whiteboard interviews. I like giving people a laptop better now
