iooi··on Ask HN: What's your best advice for someone turning 30 today?
Happy birthday! If you made it this far, your life expectancy is a lot higher now. That means you should probably start thinking longer term -- whereas in your late teens you thought about college, in college you thought about your twenties, and in your twenties you were busy with your career, in your thirties you should start thinking about retirement.

The two items that are going to dominate your retirement are your finances and your health. If any one of these suffers, the other will as well. So start saving if you haven't already, or increase your savings otherwise. Be mindful what you put in your body, not only drugs and alcohol but food as well. Stop "trying" to exercise, do both aerobic and anaerobic exercises, consistently.

That said: you're not done with life. So keep learning, keep growing, keep enjoying every day. Set goals and work on them.

Why is Google forced to provide customer support* for something they provide for free?

* they do provide customer support, it could obviously be a lot better

There are so many alternatives to email -- Outlook, Yahoo Mail, Proton, iCloud, etc. How can you argue with a straight face that Google has a monopoly on email?
iooi··on FastAPI framework, high perf, easy to learn, fast to code, ready for production
I can see that, I think what I meant was "de facto" (think flask-user) library instead of "official".
iooi··on FastAPI framework, high perf, easy to learn, fast to code, ready for production
I would love to know what HN's python folks are using for new projects these days.

I've looked at FastAPI before and it has some nice features like asyncio and pydantic integrations. But it doesn't have any official users library, and ideally a framework should have that available.

I've started looking outside of the Python ecosystem since it feels like there's nothing new and exciting come out of there. I've played around a bit with NestJS and it's amazing how far the TypeScript ecosystem has come.

It's also crazy that SQLAlchemy doesn't have typing support still, so TypeORM looks really appealing.

iooi··on Google has been testing a replacement for third-party cookies
That's if you're implementing SSO on your own, which most folks don't do. Most SaaS using SSO in their apps will use Auth0 or Okta. Dropping third-party cookies has implications for these integrations:

iooi··on Capitol Attack Was Months in the Making on Facebook
Unnecessarily combative comment. There's a reason why radio and television stations are among the first things seized in a coup. Broadcast media is crucial.
iooi··on System Design Interview book review
I can't recommend this YT channel enough: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9vLsnF6QPYuH51njmIooCQ

It's so, so much better than "Grokking the System Design Interview", which I find infantile at best and definitely not worth any amount of money.

iooi··on Hallucinations re: the rendering of Cyberpunk 2077
It looks like the person is floating rather than standing. I'm not an expert, but it seems like there's shadows missing.
iooi··on Burnt $72k testing Firebase and Cloud Run and almost went bankrupt
Because electricity is free. And internet is also free. And the rooms to put the servers are also free. A/C is free. And backup generators are free. And diesel is free.
iooi··on Why is the Google Cloud UI so slow?
If dogfooding is the main reason behind using Angular, it's a bit ironic that <10%? of teams at Google use Google Cloud over Borg.
iooi··on Philip Glass: My problem is people don’t believe I write symphonies (2017)
Ron Fricke, the man behind Baraka and Samsara, was the director of photography (and writer, editor) for Koyaanisqatsi. I would keep in mind how novel Koyaanisqatsi was for its time, and that Baraka and Samsara are mere evolutions on a revolutionary film.

The other day Slack was down and someone proposed we use Google Chat[1], had no idea they built a Slack competitor.

iooi··on An Introduction to ZFS
> That's the easy thing with ZFS, just add the disks as new VDEVs.

Careful though, depending on how you're setting up the VDEVs this could introduce fragility to the pool. For example, if you have a raidz2 partition and then add a single disk vdev, that single disk going down would make the entire pool unavailable.

iooi··on An Introduction to ZFS
I just did this operation on moving from 12x 4TB drives to 12x 16TB drives. I did it over 12 days (each resilver was ~24hours) and it wasn't too cumbersome. Considering how often you're going to grow your pool, it doesn't seem like a big drawback.
iooi··on An Introduction to ZFS
This is unnecessarily complex, you can just offline a drive, remove the disk, insert the new disk, and replace the offline drive with the new disk. ZFS will resilver the new disk.
iooi··on An Introduction to ZFS
Another +1 for the Rosewill 12-bay/15-bay cases. If you're going to run this server anywhere near you, stay away from server cases like supermicro, dell, etc. since you will suffer hearing loss if you're around them for long periods of time.

If you plan on using ZFS, make sure to take into account for the overhead and parity drives. For example, I have 12x 16TB (192TB raw) drives in raidzfs2, including overhead and parity I only have ~125TiB usable.

iooi··on Conservatives flock to Parler, claiming censorship on Facebook and Twitter
Obviously the cato institute would be biased in favor of Parler.
iooi··on What Working At Stripe Has Been Like
This is one of the few blogs where I'll always read the entire article, consistently great writing and thought-provoking ideas.

I agree with the other commenter regarding the Stripe application process. I've applied 2-3 times starting in 2015 and as recently as early 2020 and have never heard back, it's been the only company that never gets back to me!

Everything worked out, since I've landed some great positions at promising startups in the meantime, but I would have loved to experience the growth from ~500 to ~3000 employees like Patrick has.

Small improvement in this paragraph:

> “If you sell to doctors you prefer futures in which more money goes to doctors. Those are much better futures for you than futures with less money going to...

Since the article was just talking about call options, my first thought went to futures contracts instead of possible timelines. I think using "timelines" instead of futures would make this a bit more readable.

iooi··on XB-1 Supersonic Rollout
Off topic, but do you have a strong preference for JAL over ANA?
iooi··on Assange Hearing Day 14
> doing obviously a journalistic work

I don't think it's "obviously" journalistic work. Consider how little was redacted, the timing of the leaks, and the blatant bias.

How is removing upfront pricing friendly to customers? It's horrible UX.

Obviously HN always knows better, this reminds me of the Dropbox post.

There's a great book that covers every single aspect of this escape, "The Spy and the Traitor" by Ben Macintyre. Rest assured that the British embassy had plenty of Mars bars and Harrods bags for this signal!

iooi··on It’s easier to manage four people than one person
This is great advice.

> Document every critique you make to create a code guidelines document.

It helps more to have as much of this as possible in lint and style checkers, so there's no arbitrariness at all.

iooi··on Ansible-Defined Homelab
You can use an NFS provisioner so volumes are set up automatically over NFS, no need to set up taints.

MetalLB is dead simple to set up, and you can hook it up with a DNS server with TSIG to get automatic name entries for your ingress hosts.

iooi··on Andrew Yang's Data Dividend Project is pushing Big Tech to pay users for data
You don’t have to guess these numbers, Facebook publishes them in their quarterly and annual reports. IIRC, users in North America generate around $85 a year. Other geos are now where close, with Europe a distant second.
