ionyun··on The fresh start effect
I don't really know about Ozempic in detail, but from my viewpoint it is two-sided. On the one hand it doesn't solve the fundamental problem. On the other it does, presumably, make it easier. Therefor you don't have to beat the odds. Compared to most other ways of losing weight which makes things harder while not addressing gaining weight in the long run.
ionyun··on The fresh start effect
The thinking that goes into things like new years resolutions is also part of a greater ideology though. That in itself dismisses fundamental changes for unrealistic scenarios. That you don't need good housing, working conditions or health care because with this one business, diet or lifestyle trick you will beat the odds. In many countries the majority now are overweight or obese in their sixties. Despite more knowledge, method and products than ever. And that is counting all the outliers who just don't eat much or are very active.

There is nothing wrong with a new years resolution but you have to take it for what it is. Actually getting fitter, eating better and losing weight is a multiple year commitment at least. If it is hard for any extended period of time the likelihood of success is low.

ionyun··on No new iPhone? No secure iOS: Looking at an unfixed iOS vulnerability
Apple still sells previous phones as lesser, but still not very affordable, models. The iPhone 7 was released in September 2016 and discontinued in September 2019. It is also on iOS 15.8 so presumably also vulnerable to this. That would be about 4 years of security updates. Not the worst but not beating what e.g. Google promises for Pixel phones now.
ionyun··on The Closing of the Bulgarian Frontier
The authors viewpoint seem to be very much influenced by being somewhat well-off and therefor being able to chooses which changes to participate in. Now they increasingly find themselves being like everyone else and conclude that things have changed, while this was what was happening all along.

So it is more a personal frontier than anything else. A frontier is usually where little exists and by building something from the ground up you have more to say about things. While most people may not have had much of a say in the first place what happened in Eastern Europe and also more slowly in the rest of Europe was still mostly the opposite. It has been more of a frontier for others, like the French bank mentioned, than the local population.

ionyun··on Norway Joins Denmark in Swedish Tesla Strike/Blockade
I'm very much for the Nordic model and hope the unions prevail. Still I think it is yet to be seen whether it is Tesla making the mistake of thinking the whole world works like the US or if it is Sweden not understanding that it now works similarly to the US. There have been a lot of "having your cake and eating it too" going on in Sweden in the last few decades. It will be a stupid and costly exercise but as things are now I don't see any fundamental reason why Tesla wouldn't be able to go around the unions if they really wanted to.

The current Swedish government just signed an agreement to be able to station US troops under US jurisdiction at Swedish military bases. You think they are going to side with the unions?
