iolsantr··on Java for Everything
Java's start up time makes it pretty crappy for command line utilities.
iolsantr··on Mean People Fail
I think that pg's observation is probably perfectly valid. People who are mean to pg (and his peers) fail.
iolsantr··on Chernobyl’s Hot Mess, “the Elephant’s Foot,” Is Still Lethal (2013)
Gamma radiation (i.e. ionizing radiation) is just a highly energetic photons. Alpha and Beta particles are not photons, and are not referred to as ionizing radiation.
iolsantr··on The Animated Guide to Emacs Paredit
I think paredit is one of the best arguments for simple sexp style syntax. It allows you to build easily comprehensible tools that manipulate code on syntactic rather than textual level. Its definitely possible to build the same kind of tools for more complex syntaxes, but its harder for users to understand and use those tools.
iolsantr··on God's Lonely Programmer
> You are the only one who controls what can hurt you, emotionally.

While this may be true of sociopaths, it's not true of anyone else. I hope that someday you'll have a real meaningful relationship with someone else. Until then, hang in there!!

edit: snarky? yes, but if you can't sympathize with grandparent, maybe this will help.

iolsantr··on Permissions asked for by Uber Android app
Yeah I noticed that as well, it makes me wonder about the rest of his technical assertions that I'm less able to judge.

Just in case anyone was wondering here's the HTTP 1.1 rfc: https://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2616.txt A simple search will show that it does include PUT and DELETE.

iolsantr··on The Next Chapter
Doing it in someone else's facility I think is what makes it illegal. IF you had exactly the same scheme but hosted the equipment in your customer's houses, Aero's business model would be perfectly legit. (I think, it's been a while since i read the opinion)
iolsantr··on Light Table 0.7.0
The viral patent grant in gplv3 is very scary to companies that that hold a lot of patents. This seems to be a decent overview: http://www.internationallawoffice.com/newsletters/detail.asp...
iolsantr··on Couple 'fined' £100 for leaving a bad review
I think contracts signed without some sort of comprehension test having been performed should be considered suspect. This would have the effect of preventing things from being hidden in the small print, and making for much shorter (and probably more standardized) contracts.
iolsantr··on ISPs Removing Their Customers' Email Encryption
At least nobody thinks MITM attacks are only of concern to big corps, militaries and paranoiacs now.
iolsantr··on OVH servers exploited through shellshock
As I understand it, server updates run counter to the idea of servers as static, externally configured fixtures ala cloud formation or its competitors. To merge the concepts you'd need to have aws or whoever manage your cloud formation templates and automatically re-deploy whenever they make a change to them for security reasons... I think maybe our tooling isn't quite there yet, but I'm sure its coming. Disclaimer: I don't have a very deep knowledge of cloudformation, so I might be talking out of my ass.
iolsantr··on Almost Everything in “Dr. Strangelove” Was Based on Fact
I've no idea who made this map: http://img.4plebs.org/boards/tg/image/1376/37/1376372253480.... , but it looks like people who live in or near Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus or Cleveland would have signifcant concerns about direct nuclear strikes. Ohio is historically a major manufacturing center in the US. And Wright Patterson AFB is a major logistal and administration center of the Air Force.
iolsantr··on Almost Everything in “Dr. Strangelove” Was Based on Fact
Extreme emegency preparededness is insane, but buying a yacht is not? I don't think there is anything wrong with someones hobby being building and stocking their secret fort in the back yard.
iolsantr··on Reflected File Download: A New Web Attack Vector
I get that. I just dread the days when malpractice for programmers is as common as it is for doctors. I like building functionality, not fortresses.
iolsantr··on Reflected File Download: A New Web Attack Vector
Stories like these make me never want to make a http webservice again. HTTP(S) is just way too complicated for me to ever be confident I've done everything right. It's getting to the point where webservices are like crypto: only experts should touch them.
iolsantr··on We Can Eradicate Malaria Within a Generation
> 1. innovation does not only benefit the "rich west" - computers are everywhere, man.

While this is true, the evidence so far is that innovation (at least of the kind we have been engaging in) benefits the rich far more than the poor.

iolsantr··on Please remove mitsuhiko/*
They are soliciting donations using the project name. I don't think that falls into nominative use. It'd be really weird if I could use the logo of the Salvation Army to solicit donations for my own organization even if I intended to give some of the donated money to them.
iolsantr··on Please remove mitsuhiko/*
If a project name was trademarked, you might be able to get them for trading on that name, maybe?
iolsantr··on Orbital Sciences Antares rocket explodes after liftoff
I don't think that's just officialese. They are going to be under enormous pressure to find out what went wrong as quickly as possible. Orbital Science's future may be significantly affected by how well (and quickly) they deal with the aftermath.
iolsantr··on Show HN: Supercharge GitHub with ZenHub
Because that's clearly the name of a Java project.
iolsantr··on Calories in, calories out
I don't really disagree with you, but.

These suggestions ignore the (soft) limitations of human agency. The degree of difficulty in (not) eating an additional (something) has never been really quantified in sufficiently broad spectrum of situations, to my knowledge.

A generally helpful and encouraging life can lead to many positive changes, weight loss not least among them.

Maybe instead of telling fat people to lose weight, we should be inviting them to parties, and when they get there, treating them like everyone else.

Just a thought.

iolsantr··on FTDI driver kills fake FTDI FT232s
They may be from scottland, but I bet anyplace they distribute their driver can claim jurisdiction. After all, the crime (or tort or whatever it is) is not writing the offending driver, but distributing it to an unsuspecting public.
iolsantr··on FTDI driver kills fake FTDI FT232s
hah... Assuming the prototype is actually identical to the delivered product. People who want to skim money off the top aren't stupid, the prototype will probably contain the specified part and so will the first few lots. To insure validity of every part you need to test every part.
iolsantr··on After 15 years as shareware, Ad Muncher is now completely free
It may be unreasonable, but I think it is pretty common. I always feel a little guilty about billing clients when I take on contract work. There are personality types that are always going to find that kind of self assertion difficult. That said, in the American business environment (and anything resembling it), it is absolutely necessary. If his reasons are what he says they are, I think he is making the wrong decision.
