inviromentalist··on Cancer medicine generates enormous revenues but marginal benefits for patients?
Ive seen medical attempt to sell me extra services within their hospital network with my kid. 2000$ to fix Tongue Tie with surgery. Laser procedure is 600$ and done at a dentist.

The ($200-300k/yr) physician said there was data surgery is better. So I looked it up, no data, and surgeons started using laser because it heals better. Upon confronting she said- if you ask a physician they will recommend a physician. (So factionalism?)

Why is this nonscience acceptable in medical?

On a different note, hospitals somehow get patients for non hospital needs.(disclaimer my wife owns her own practice and competes) For instance if you go to a hospital for physical therapy, you will likely have 1 Dr for at least 2 patients. You get 37 minutes of treatment because they can legally bill for 1 hour. At my wife's clinic, she treats 1 on 1, and sometimes sessions go over 1 hour.

There are no advantages of a hospital for this care.

I'm not sure if overregulation or lack of patient information is to blame. I'm horrified at the thought of being sick and dealing with our medical cartels.

inviromentalist··on Mac OS Catalina: more trouble than it’s worth (Part 2)
Feel free to correct or add.

I'm genuinely trying to figure out where I'm wrong.

inviromentalist··on Mac OS Catalina: more trouble than it’s worth (Part 2)
I've tried very hard to understand what benefits a MacBook has over Windows/Linux.

I've boiled it down to- it can compile iOS apps, and you can use Unix commands. The first is Apple intentionally being anti competitive, the later is a genuine benefit that I nearly am unaffected by being a Windows/Linux user.

However the strangest thing came up in my research, the number of SWE that said they liked the way it looks. It's shinny.

I genuinely don't know what to think about Apple users decision making.

inviromentalist··on Is Recycling a Waste of Time?
I've started recycling at least 1 extra use out of everything, but I'm concerned this will not be sustainable.

Boxes I stack in my (large) garage. One day I will use these boxes again. Plastic Tupperware from various sources, cleaned and used for holding tools and stuff.

I can't figure out a good use for milk jugs.

Is this an issue of "sellers" not meeting "buyers"? I imagine milk companies could reuse this.

inviromentalist··on The Byzantine Generals Problem (1982) [pdf]
My most frustrating thing about the crypto movement was how uneducated people were.

People had no idea that POW isn't scalable, yet would insist that a Bitcoin copy-paste would solve the problem. Or that a centralized coin was the future. Or that proof of stake was a working solution.

I still hear people wrong today. I only imagine that if people understood, there would be less altcoin mania.

inviromentalist··on Usenet – Let's Return to Public Spaces
I'm a fan of this idea.

Reddit is a corporate cesspool where marketing teams do "reputation management".

Today, You might think someone is sharing a deal on groceries, but in reality Aldi has carefully planned a post, buying accounts and upvotes.

When caught, marketing teams learn what people use to identify fake accounts, and make future accounts more legitimate.

Heck we still see this on Twitter with Trump. Identification should be optional but preferred.

inviromentalist··on Usenet – Let's Return to Public Spaces
The cycle-

>New users, new ideas.

> Mods ban these new ideas because they don't comply with existing culture

> Mods get heavy with their justice

>Core users are mistaken for newbies, and face mod wrath

> Core users migrate to new websites

Guess where HN is on this timeline

inviromentalist··on Becoming a high performing software developer working from your bedroom
I'm more curious how a 12 year self taught programmer can make 6 figures.

My Engineering job pays too well to jump into software

inviromentalist··on US says it can prove Huawei has backdoor access to mobile-phone networks
Shouldn't moments like this be death blows?

I had totally thought after Apple and Microsoft were caught working on PRISM Americans and corporations would be doing drastic steps to avoid their communication being intercepted.

But for some reason that never happened.

inviromentalist··on Apple engineer killed in Tesla crash had previously complained about autopilot
This is the ethics of Tesla.

They are marketing primarily, function second.

My biggest concern is that since the company isn't profitable(?) That these highly risky things are acceptable. Other profitable auto companies cannot be this wreckless.

It's not like they can go after Personal assets.

inviromentalist··on Swift Playgrounds for macOS
Any chance Apple would make it possible to compile an iOS app without giving Apple any money?

I want to support my customers, but I don't want to support anti competitive FAANG

inviromentalist··on Firefox 73
It's exactly how it sounds. Reddit loads in 1s on chrome and 30s in Firefox.

I used to blame my computer for not having enough free space, but now that I have 200GB of SSD free, I suppose I need to blame the software at some point.

inviromentalist··on Firefox 73
My Firefox install is at least 30x slower than chrome.

Is this my fault?

It's what prevents me from using Firefox.

inviromentalist··on Apps I pay for as a bootstrapped business
Counter points-

There is no telling if it will actually save time. You could be messing with configurations, have to learn their docs, etc... Or future migration could be expensive in both time and money.

The cost savings can/do exist. Especially as things scale or last a long time.

Custom is more configurable.

People overestimate their time worth? Sure you can theoretically work for 75$/hr, but can you get overtime/additional revenue that easily?

What is your value add? If it's software, I might suggest custom is best because that's your business. If you mash a bunch of software suppliers together, you become a middle man. I'm not saying that doesn't work, but I've seen companies go back and forth on this.

inviromentalist··on Apps I pay for as a bootstrapped business
My biggest concern is being dependent on these systems, the systems changing, and it breaking the process.

I have the mentality of self hosting and diy, cheap, better understanding, and imo more reliable.

Most these services have a learning curve anyway. Are the services really worth it?

inviromentalist··on Apps I pay for as a bootstrapped business
Starter story spam
inviromentalist··on Mozilla’s plan to fix internet privacy
If anyone can figure out why Firefox doesn't work on my computer, let me know.

It's at least 30 times slower than chrome. So somethings wrong Right?

inviromentalist··on Microsoft begins showing an anti-Firefox ad in the Windows 10 start menu
People defend the walled garden of Apple.

But I think it's just post purchase rationalization.

inviromentalist··on The Disneyfication of a University
I used to have this mentality until I tried hiring minimum wage workers.

Minimum wage workers are extremely low quality. They have 0 skills and require education on everything. Sure Engineers need to learn too, but there's a gigantic difference.

Minimum wage workers are hard to find. Most people won't work for that little, so turnover is high.

Minimum wage workers don't care. They know they can find another job easily.

I was forced into paying 15$/hr for data collection as a result.

inviromentalist··on Ask HN: Is it worth switching from web development to native iOS dev?
Very risky to be a developer for a walked garden.

If Apple does Apple things, they might make it harder and more expensive to develop. You might be a great programmer, but your company may not want to build native iOS apps.
