interstice··on My sixth year as a bootstrapped founder
This is encouraging as someone who is very comfortable with the development side of my studio but still finds the business side daunting at times
interstice··on The dating app paradox
Sounds like a whole cottage industry could take advantage of this and repeatedly build competitor apps.

How is this not an issue? Non competes?

interstice··on You can't do that because I hate you
I have run into this with JavaScript, Shopify and numerous applications. Usually it’s because an internal ideology or future plan js incompatible with a currently working featured. It’s mildly annoying when there is no recommended replacement. It’s very annoying when there are a bunch of suggested alternatives that don’t work. The worst is when the attitude is “you shouldn’t be trying to do it this way in the first place” when there really is no good alternative.
interstice··on Why people still fall for fake news about climate change
It seems like the solution is not to compensate oil producers but to outcompete them. As long as the price of batteries and solar etc keep dropping there is a chance, but if we reach monopoly before it gets cheap enough it’s probably not going to work.

interstice··on "CSS is dramatically more difficult than learning assembly language" [audio]
Something I don’t like about the way grid and flex has been implemented is the seemingly random application of naming conventions. Memorising the differences between justify items and align items, the argument order for repeat including min and max content variables. The odd naming convention for grid area.. There’s a lot going on.

Oh yeah and debugging a broken sticky because some parent has stacking context stuff going on, also fun.

interstice··on Windows 11 is last in gaming performance tests against 3 Linux gaming distros
I spent a long time trying to fix sub pixel font rendering in Windows 10, it always seemed to be either pixelated, chromatic, or blurry.

Im on a Mac now but did this eventually get fixed?

interstice··on Ask HN: Why do half of Internet users think we are living in a simulation?
Also worth considering that simulating the universe for billions of years could run on the equivalent of a raspberry pi in some higher order universe. It just seems huge to us because we are living in it
interstice··on Bootstrapping self awareness in GPT-4: Towards recursive self inquiry
There was a TV show called Person of Interest that (irrc) had a limitation that it had all its data deleted every night to prevent self awareness.

Not to spoil anything but a large part of the plot was how it circumvented that using a method not entirely unlike this. Life imitates art imitates life I guess.

I agree about the part where it's a static model - it's effectively the same as using a notebook without memorising what's in the notebook. That doesnt mean it can't generate insightful commentary as a result of a novel way of interacting with itself though, I think?

interstice··on Hello, stranger – Talking to random people
I feel like cities and technology can result in over-socialisation for a lot of people. I've noticed that dogs that spend a lot of time being fussed over (eg living in a cafe) become quite indifferent to people, and living in a city I feel the same thing has happened to me to a degree.

That's not to say I'm not social or that I don't talk to strangers, its just more of a conscious decision than - say - talking to the only other human I've seen that day might be.

interstice··on One sleepless night can rapidly reverse depression for several days in mice
This sounds familiar, I got to a point a few years ago where even if I could get to sleep I'd wake up at 3-4am with every last problem racing around my mind, but have never felt good with any amount of sleep.

In the end I went to the GP for anxiety and came out with a depression diagnosis and a bottle of Lexapro. Lucky for me I didn't get the crazy side effects and in combination with melatonin at least getting to sleep is no longer a problem.

In the past I've also found that deliberately clearing my thoughts is a way to slip from 'day mode' to those dozy random thoughts, but its often hard to remember in the moment and doesn't always work.

interstice··on Styling with Classy CSS (2006)
To be clear I still use semantic css and don’t use tailwind, but while aiming for pragmatism.
interstice··on Styling with Classy CSS (2006)
I used to think this way, but 1) it’s easy to do a find replace of f-green and 2) turns out no one we work with changes websites this way. The closest I’ve seen is changing a font site wide with some size etc adjustments
interstice··on My rude-ass car
Hi fellow mini owner! For anyone else reading this - I wholeheartedly agree. Do not buy a mini without knowing what you're getting into.

For myself - Mini's were my first two cars, and the second one is the one I'm restoring. For some reason I still don't fully understand my parents encouraged me to own a vehicle with the reliability and structural strength of a wet paper towel.. And if you know me I'm not exactly risk averse. But I love that thing and it's still one of the most fun vehicles I've driven after all this time. It's also possible to rev it out without constantly breaking the speed limit, something that the BMW and my CBR 1000RR both struggle with (CBR gets plenty of track time).

It's been repainted, solid subframe mounts, blue coil springs, adjustable dampers, adjustable brake bias, disk brakes at the front - you name it. Currently planning the build of a 1275GT motor (SW1 cam etc) and planning to use a Motogadget blue unit to solve many of the electrical gremlins. I don't know if it will be a daily or even if I will keep it long (I love building stuff so when its done I start looking for the next thing), but I've always meant to do some mini club cruises.

interstice··on Improving deep sleep may prevent dementia, study finds
I've been stuck on <30 minutes of deep sleep for as long as I've had an Apple watch and probably much longer. Some observations I recently made:

- Japan has these drinks with 200mg of GABA, I don't know if it was the 20,000 steps we were doing every day or the drinks but on the days I had it deep sleep was often (not always) closer to an hour. Strangely enough GABA is illegal here in NZ so I'm trying L-Theanine with less obvious effects.

- Exercise (even 2h+ moderate) doesn't have any effect, adjusting caffeine doesn't seem to either

- A warm shower immediately before bed strangely did seem to have a considerable although not perfectly consistent effect

- Just got put on Concerta for ADHD and although im getting less sleep i'm also getting 40+ minutes of deep sleep. After recently doing research into GABA + Dopamine + etc it seems to be a bit of a brain circuit thing for me.

interstice··on My rude-ass car
So far my newest car is a 2006 BMW with just enough electronics to be helpful but not so much I get the constant noises I've had when renting anything newer. Amazingly nothing major has let go yet.

Did enjoy renting a Tesla Model 3 but I can't stand the 'modern minimal apartment' driving experience, give me a Supra style wrap around cockpit or give me death.

What I came to say though, is this is making me want to restomod my way through the rest of my car ownership career, I'm almost done with a 1981 Mini but after that putting tesla motors and pi driven dashboards in cars exclusively from pre 2010 has a growing appeal.

interstice··on Phind Model beats GPT-4 at coding, with GPT-3.5 speed and 16k context
If it’s trained on data (particularly docs) after 2021 that’s an automatic win over Chat GPT in some situations!
interstice··on Autism and responding to authority (2019)
This may explain why I lasted less than two years as a programmer with a boss and have spent the remaining 10 without one. I absolutely could mot stand being told what to do by someone who didn’t earn respect and didn’t give it where it was due.
interstice··on Autism and responding to authority (2019)
I have absolutely had the issue with being in authority, up to the point of allowing a staff member to work from home for extended time and assuming they were doing everything they said they were doing because why would they lie about it?

Later it took months to fix the damage and I realised that some people will absolutely take advantage even at their own future expense.

interstice··on Let's use AI to rethink education, instead of panicking about cheating
There was a good Hardfork podcast a little while ago with a teacher that required using AI as part of the work. If it’s going to be part of our daily lives anyway this seems to be the most real life relevant approach I reckon.
