Is it cynical of me to think that if your kid can't write a high school essay without GPT, your kid is just very dumb?

Nah, I'd say your spot on. But if your kid is smart, do you really want them spending 10+ hours every other week on a nonsense sociology essay?

At some threshold they are just having their time wasted repeatedly demonstrating a skill they already mastered.

Putting to a side whether a high grade in a pre-university class really counts as “mastery”, human cavities with skills fade with time if they’re not used.

This is must clear to people who speak multiple languages and don’t use one very frequently.

Getting 5s now does not mean that they’ll be able to do so again in 4 years if they pass the task off to an AI.

Certainly. A lot of the folks on this site probably could have used a few more humanities classes.

It is nice to use when a quiz or exam is based on hours of painful unedited video lectures, text examples, 100s of pages of books, and past quizzes or exams with little idea what is best to study.

Summarize, create flash cards (Anki decks), ask it to help you learn, and such it is pretty helpful.

Recently listened to someone who said they gamified their grades to ensure they were not wasting their time getting A’s.

There was a good Hardfork podcast a little while ago with a teacher that required using AI as part of the work. If it’s going to be part of our daily lives anyway this seems to be the most real life relevant approach I reckon.

I think there is a lens you can view LLM's in education through where they are a weapon for students to leverage against admins who want to waste their time
