internetman55··on China’s Grueling Formula for Success: 9-9-6
Isn't prioritizing work a manager's job ?
internetman55··on $560M Powerball Winner Can Keep Her Name Private, Judge Rules
Sounds like this guy made the mistake in being really rich in a place that isn't "for" rich people. The rapper Lil Boosie has an interview on YouTube where he talks about this. Once you reach a certain level of wealth and status and start to stand out a little too much, you simply can't be around "normal" people without many of them becoming enraged and wanting to hurt, rob, or kill you. You need to go to a rich-people-friendly area (basically some really nice areas of the major metros) or that kind of stuff will just continue.
internetman55··on Fitter, happier, and other fantasies of modern life
didn't read the article closely, but i'm sick of people getting memed into caring about things like intermittent fasting and honey vinegar drinks (???) and mindfulness meditation apps.

It seems like people are unable to focus on the big picture stuff that actually matters (don't get fat, sleep enough, have enough money to not be broke, have good relationships with family and friends, managing stress effectively, etc.). So they get obsessed with these random things nobody gives a fuck about and fail at the big picture stuff.

internetman55··on Why ‘your’ programmers just want to code
This is something I think a lot of managers fail to understand. You are not "in the club", you are not an "owner", etc. You are an employee paid by the company's owner(s) to oversee resources. You yourself are a resource. Once you start thinking that your job is about "getting wins", making yourself look good, etc. you will start running your group like a fiefdom and engaging in rent-seeking behavior, basically stealing from the company since you're seeking your own aggrandizement/comfort/job security over the bottom line for the company. And since you're overseeing realistically multiple million dollar projects, you doing so is 10x, 100x, 1000x bigger of a deal than some developer being lazy at work or trying to use the new framework so he can put it on his resume. In this sense I think poor managers are actually the worst employees.

internetman55··on A Career Cold Start Algorithm
You're probably correct in your analysis, but in general I'm very wary of people who use self-help readings or techniques to analyze what everyone around them should be doing differently. I often run into people who seem to use these kinds of things as excuses to blame others and not take reasonable action on their own.
internetman55··on People Don't Know Themselves Very Well
Tbh i think online dating is sort of a scam. If i meet girls irl theyll be staring at me and following me around while similar girls won't be that into me online (some will but fewer). I just make friends irl now to meet people.
internetman55··on Show HN: Investment Calculator – A simple retirement calculator
Is that actually a suggestion? If you make an upper middle class salary (like a programmer does) and reasonably control your expenses, I think you only are going to miss making retirement if you have an expensive medical disaster or you invest too heavily in the market then sell during a crash to make rent, or some weird thing like that. I'm not sure if $20000 is going to make your difference
internetman55··on American companies are suppressing wages for many workers
I think software developers are dumber than average cause their skills are in such demand that they don't bother learning how to generate/use leverage like professionals in other niches do
internetman55··on The British amateur who debunked the mathematics of happiness (2014)
A common topic I see is the surfeit of trained scientists, and how many of them are unable to find employment in their field (professor or other acceptably remunerative research position). Maybe many of these guys out there are simply not good enough to do science, and we should raise the bar for entry to these training programs if so many of their graduates fundamentally misunderstand the mathematics their analyses rely upon.
internetman55··on How to Study Mathematics (2017)
Im not sure that real in the context of math means anything other than the real numbers or (at a stretch) existence. I agree with you. And no one talks about this but a priori i dont see why even the natural numbers have anything to do with reality either. "Counting" some objects seemingly would require a notion of the object and some way to determine whether each part of reality was or was not the object which already seems fairly abstract and removed from the world. I think certain parts of math just seem more intuitive to certain people
internetman55··on The Role of Luck in Life Success
Maybe I have a stronger intrinsic work motivation than most people, but I seem to get luckier when I slow down, assess the situation, and start making simple but sometimes extremely emotionally difficult changes.
internetman55··on The Role of Luck in Life Success
And you can overexert yourself in the same amount of time, leading to deterioration in the rest of your life and eventually handicapping even your ability to work hard. I feel like this is a quite complex issue and I'm not really sure why so many people try to give one line advices on it.
internetman55··on What Happens to Us Does Not Happen to Most of You
Agree Let's face facts, it's stupid to care for some random company morally in that case. And let's face some more facts, even if you don't believe in morals or agree with that one, it's way more important at the societal level for women to be able to have children then for some rando company to be guaranteed a profit
internetman55··on Why I Quit Google to Work for Myself
Tbh that's one of the reasons I always focused on teamwork at my last job, even though I was evaluated only on how fast I closed out my specific tickets. Since everything at the company was dysfunctional, I didn't really care about being employed long-term or getting promotions. Thus the only things relevant to my career beyond doing enough to maintain my salary was to build relationships with my team mates (building out my network) and developing transferrable skills for the future.

So basically the long-term effect of these systems was me to slack on whatever my manager deemed important to get done to whatever extent I could while I did whatever would win me clout points with other developers or let me learn a cool skill.

I also got pretty jacked from sneaking off to the gym etc. Lol it was lit

internetman55··on Why I Quit Google to Work for Myself
A family friend (manages a programming group) kept a basically incompetent but calming, friendly programmer on her team for 2-3 years because of his effect on the emotional state of the rest of the team. She his pay was worth it for that reason. Unfortunately the company's owner eventually realized that he was paying the salary of someone who couldn't program and fired him.
internetman55··on Ask HN: I'm writing a book about white-collar drug use, including tech sector
That's why I used to refuse to drink coffee at work. I'll drink coffee sometimes cause I like it, but I'm not gonna take drugs at the expense of my sleep schedule etc. to improve some company's bottom line.
internetman55··on Poor fitness linked to weaker brain fiber, higher dementia risk

internetman55··on An American served a year in prison for copyright conduct that is legal in EU
I feel like high income Americans might be addicted to living above their means (tons of cars, everyone owns a big house, etc.). Im pretty cheap (and dont have kids/mortgage yet) and I got laid off my job. Basically unemployment covered all my expenses with a decent chunk left over to save and I just kept my work insurance with COBRA. Since I just saved a lot of money working I could theoretically be job hunting for almost 2 years before my emergency fund was empty assuming no unemployment income. But im also an entry level tech employee so its not hard to find a new job at a high salary relative to most people.
internetman55··on The unnecessary demise of Barnes and Noble
I go to movie theaters pretty much all the time for that reason. I wanna go where people are and not sit in my house. Plus usually Netflix doesn't have any shows i care that much about watching except for oa or a backstreet boys documentary
internetman55··on It's Getting Harder to Tell Banks from Tech Companies
Haha, i heard lines like that at so many places i interviewed with. 'we're not a finance company, we're a tech company that does finance' etc
internetman55··on The Algorithm Design Manual (2008)
Not completely sure on this. My grandparents are into their 80s eating stuff like McDonalds, KFC, etc. reasonably often. Maybe McDonald's isn't good for you, but the bigger issue seems to be being fat
internetman55··on Facebook lost around 2.8M U.S. users under 25 last year

internetman55··on Jordan Peterson's book is a bestseller – except where it matters most

I think computer programmers won't understand this problem since i made enough to raise a middle class family at my first job out of college
internetman55··on I Am a 9 to 5 Developer (And So Can You)
That sounds like your manager's problem to me, but I got laid off recently so take that as you will (not even mad cause i copped a fat severance check and got admitted to a great graduate program, and the job was sort of subpar with poor management)
internetman55··on How to Be a Rocket Ship: Be More Productive One Minute at a Time
Has anyone considered that maybe the human biology is actually smart enough to figure out whether you should/shouldn't be focusing on something at a given time and that there might be negative effects to trying to scam it into doing what you (your boss) want (wants) all the time?
