Not a throwaway account. Real HN talk I live for this.

internet2000··on America.gov
It works well. Pretty nice. I asked about what do I need to know before digging in my backyard and it told me all the right things, referring me to my local govt website for permits.
internet2000··on Sonnet 5.5
Can confirm, I'm currently using Opus 5.5 to fix some Opus 4.5 slop from around this time last year.
internet2000··on Japan moves to tighten rules for foreigners
They don't want to risk someone coming for a job, getting fired and becoming a drain on the social safety net. Able to care for themselves not just now, but for a while. It's a reasonable position.
internet2000··on Show HN: Share your AI Setup, Learn from others
There's zero chance you have some secret sauce a motivated employer / your replacement couldn't figure out (using AI) if they wanted to fire you.
internet2000··on Don't be the out of touch Kung Fu master
> I only have the nagging question that if it’s so easy, why would the clients not do it by themselves?

They can do it. What's the issue?

internet2000··on Homebrew 7.0.0
The GUI is pretty sharp, but I don’t like it uses emoji instead of SF symbols.

Is it Claude or Codex built?

internet2000··on The Waymo effect: how AI is quietly making research less collaborative
No, it is not.
internet2000··on iPhone Duo
> 3. The aspect ratios were weird. I ended up using native app sizes, making the extra space kind of a waste

Ternus opened the Duo segment of the presentation talking about aspect ratio. Having the "right" aspect ratio drove the design for this more than anything else. It's something Apple really cares about (c.f. iPads and MacBooks)

Microsoft had one with a different folding method and screen, but it was equivalent to a product in which the key differentiators are the folding method and screen?
internet2000··on Galaxy Z Fold 8 get the same folding animation as iPhone Duo
Just you.
internet2000··on iPhone Duo
Good thing I don't live there.
internet2000··on iPhone Duo
> I'm excited that the Duo will get developers to actually design apps for foldables.

For Apple foldables yes. Not Android.

internet2000··on iPhone Duo
Samsung had 7 generations of the wrong way, then one of the right way after they learned what Apple was doing. Microsoft literally does not have a product like this.
internet2000··on Smartphone makers don't bother to comply with EU repairability requirements
I wouldn't want to design the phone around an event that happens every 3 years at minimum.
internet2000··on Windows 11's "special" developer edition looks like another marketing misfire
So what is it, concretely? Default settings and bundled software? Like Lenovo bloatware but from Microsoft?
internet2000··on Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says
Are we forcing China to make stuff for us?

It's hard to have people use data in these types of conversations, so I'll just link two charts.

internet2000··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
Objectively the coolest thing ever.
internet2000··on Paint.net 5.2 alpha now runs on Linux
Bluesky is not real life.
internet2000··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
Are you guys nerfing Fable 5 to make it cheaper? I know you probably can't admit to it in public, but my email is on my profile.
internet2000··on Apple caught off guard by AI demand for Mac Mini and Mac Studio
This is straight up a conspiracy theory.

internet2000··on Claude Session URL appended to commit messages and PR descriptions by default
> "Sent from my iPhone" is an ad because the iPhone is not a meaningful part of sending the email.

It explains the brevity and any typos. That's how I see it used.

internet2000··on Claude Session URL appended to commit messages and PR descriptions by default
So many people cared enough to complain, even in the comments here!
internet2000··on Debian votes to allow "responsible use of generative AI"
> Are there examples of anyone discussing this and reaching other conclusions?

Yes. Very notably: https://ziglang.org/code-of-conduct/

internet2000··on Our decision on Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX
Big difference between giving the president a gold trinket to curry favor and getting disappeared by the Communists.
internet2000··on “It works better in the app”
> [1]The "reasons" primarily are that Apple refused to support PWAs, hamstrung mobile Safari, and refused to allow third-party browsers. So while it's true that native apps can offer a better experience than mobile web apps, that's mostly just because Apple artificially restricts web apps.

This is disingenuous. Quoting Steve Jobs himself:

> We know from painful experience that letting a third party layer of software come between the platform and the developer ultimately results in sub-standard apps and hinders the enhancement and progress of the platform. If developers grow dependent on third party development libraries and tools, they can only take advantage of platform enhancements if and when the third party chooses to adopt the new features. We cannot be at the mercy of a third party deciding if and when they will make our enhancements available to our developers.

> This becomes even worse if the third party is supplying a cross platform development tool. The third party may not adopt enhancements from one platform unless they are available on all of their supported platforms. Hence developers only have access to the lowest common denominator set of features. Again, we cannot accept an outcome where developers are blocked from using our innovations and enhancements because they are not available on our competitor’s platforms.

Originally about Adobe's Flash, but can apply with no editing (!) to Google Chrome :)
