intermerda··on Today is when the Amazon brain drain sent AWS down the spout
> Management learns this the hard way [2]

I don't get this. Why is Musk tweeting a fake quote and why are you posting it? What does it signify?

intermerda··on Journalists turn in access badges, exit Pentagon rather than agreeing new rules
> Everything I've seen so far from Trump is what I voted for.

Did you always have fascist tendencies or did Trump bring them out?

intermerda··on Journalists turn in access badges, exit Pentagon rather than agreeing new rules
> How does the HN crew based in the US think about the current administration?

HN and the broader tech community have had their mask off moments.

intermerda··on Despite what's happening in the USA, renewables are winning globally
American conservatives have long stopped pretending to have any policy other than bowing to their King.
intermerda··on Despite what's happening in the USA, renewables are winning globally
Yes, Biden's Inflation Reduction Act had tons of provisions to help out renewables in general and solar energy in particular. Most of them were in form of tax credits which I'm sure helped Texas a lot. Many of Biden's policies helped out red states quite a lot.

Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill (ugh..) has already rolled back most of those policies. Additionally DOE and EPA have announced termination of many projects, canceled previously approved funding, banned words such as "climate change", among tons of measures aimed at curbing the progress made.

You, of course, knew that and were being disingenuous.

Or you didn't know what and are simply ignorant.

intermerda··on US Launches Financial Rescue of Argentina, Treasury Buys Pesos
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dying_of_Whiteness explained a lot for me.

> Trevor died from liver disease that would have been preventable if he had had access to health care. But until his dying breath, he agreed with the policies that prevented ACA improvements because he did not want his tax dollars to pay for Mexicans or "welfare queens".

intermerda··on Apple defined ICE as a "protected class" in blocking anti-ICE apps
The fact is that neither the headline nor the article claims that the definition of "protected class" being used is the same exact legal definition used in the US.

The fact is that Apple is saying ICE is a "targeted group" and lays out every single legally protected class along with it. You can look them up if you are unaware.

The fact is that the article backs this point by citing the exact TOS.

You don't care about facts.

intermerda··on Apple defined ICE as a "protected class" in blocking anti-ICE apps
I don't know why you feel it's loaded if the language of "targeted group" is accompanied with every single group that is a protected class.

> 1.1.1 Defamatory, discriminatory, or mean-spirited content, including references or commentary about religion, race, sexual orientation, gender, national/ethnic origin, or other targeted groups, particularly if the app is likely to humiliate, intimidate, or harm a targeted individual or group. Professional political satirists and humorists are generally exempt from this requirement.

This "ackchyually" behavior from HN is so bizarre.

intermerda··on ICE bought vehicles equipped with fake cell towers to spy on phones
> Much of this was economic: illegal immigrants dilute the labour force.

Then why are the farmers complaining about it? https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-farm-groups-want-trump-s...

intermerda··on ICE bought vehicles equipped with fake cell towers to spy on phones
> Obama was quite strict about it and deported tons of illegals. An arrest isn't a violent kidnapping. Being arrested by the feds for breaking the law has usually been a fairly unpleasant ordeal.

Obama prioritized deportation of people convicted of serious crimes and recent arrivals after they got their day in court. He did not call Mexicans rapists. The admin did not arrest US citizens. Being arrested by the feds even if you did not break the law is a much worse ordeal.

> Most Americans support the idea of deporting people who break our immigration laws, thusly cutting in line while millions of others patiently wait.

The line for legal citizenship does not move faster if you deport more people.

> This really doesn't have to be an emotional issue. Very few Americans support actual open borders. We can't feed, house or provide medical care to the entire world. That is why there is a process.

When masked men come out of a van and kidnap you off the streets in broad daylight, tell me if it's an emotional issue or not.

> Were you this vocal when Obama deported millions, or is this just more "I hate Trump" hot air?

Were you always a fascist sympathizer or did Trump stoke those feelings in you?

intermerda··on ICE bought vehicles equipped with fake cell towers to spy on phones
Trump's bill allocated 170 billion dollars to ICE. That figure is greater than annual defense spending of every country in the world other than US and China. I believe it's spread over four years, so amortized over that time period it would have more budget than all but 12 countries in the world.
intermerda··on The Supreme Court weighs conversion therapy in a case from Colorado
Where does it imply that it's the view of all nine justices on the bench?

Are you intentionally trying to undermine the gravity of this by straw-manning?

intermerda··on The Supreme Court weighs conversion therapy in a case from Colorado
https://www.commondreams.org/news/alito-2668492585

> Alito replied, “I agree with you,” when Windsor said people who are conservative Christians need “to return our country to a place of godliness.” He said Windsor was “probably right” when she said, “I don’t know that we can negotiate with the left in the way that needs to happen for the polarization to end. I think that it’s a matter of, like, winning.”

> “One side or the other is going to win,” agreed the justice. “I mean, there can be a way of working—a way of living together peacefully, but it’s difficult, you know, because there are differences on fundamental things that really can’t be compromised. It’s not like you can split the difference.”

intermerda··on Apple takes down ICE tracking apps after pressure from DOJ
> Also let’s be honest, if any government official “requests” anything it is always under the threat of retribution.

If you wanted to be honest you would say this government, not any government.

intermerda··on Apple takes down ICE tracking apps after pressure from DOJ
> In both cases US government officials applied pressure and implied legal action to force private companies to act in ways that enabled law enforcement to act with less resistance.

That's like saying cooking is comparable with stabbing someone because both involve moving a knife back and forth. Give me a break.

intermerda··on Apple takes down ICE tracking apps after pressure from DOJ
> It remains Apple's policy today.

What is that policy?

> According to Grok

Why did you ask an LLM which is manipulated by a single person when he doesn't like facts?

> So, we have precedent where four Democratic senators pressured Apple to remove an app that allowed people to evade law enforcement.

Yes, senators sent letters to several companies. Apple listened. What would have happened if it didn't? What would happen to Apple if they don't listen now?

Do you sincerely believe that both situations are comparable?

intermerda··on Dbos: Durable Workflow Orchestration with Go and PostgreSQL
I remembered reading about the DBOS paper a while back - https://arxiv.org/abs/2007.11112. Is this an evolution of that research work? If so, how did an OS for databases morph into a workflow orchestration service?
intermerda··on Energy Dept. adds 'climate change' and 'emissions' to banned words list
> And I'm at work right now but you can search for "biden admin ban word women/female/mother/etc". You may not be able to use google because they remove a lot of links to conservative outlets (I like yandex for this kind of search, although I haven't searched enough to know whether they're the best).

You have been brainwashed by the conservative propaganda machine.

intermerda··on EPA tells some scientists to stop publishing studies
It doesn't have to be explicitly racist. https://www.thenation.com/article/archive/exclusive-lee-atwa...

Lee Atwater would be proud. It started with Reagan and is used with exceptional effectiveness by the current Republican Party.

intermerda··on 1-year risks of cancers associated with Covid-19 vaccination
The lower rates weren't statistically significant.

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with the study, just pointing out the table. In fact, it kind of me of the Texas Sharpshooter Fallacy - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_sharpshooter_fallacy#Exa....

intermerda··on 1-year risks of cancers associated with Covid-19 vaccination
> The vaccine does not prevent infection and does not reduce the rate of infection,

This is not true. Multiple studies have shown that the vaccines significantly reduced infection rates.

> however it was mandated for everyone to take it, even strong young people with no comorbidities that had already been infected.

This is not true as well. Plenty of places around the world where it wasn't mandated. If you have a specific region in mind, do you mind elaborating? Are you talking about Korea?

> I know people who were otherwise healthy and got diagnosed with cancer after the Covid19 pandemic, everyone suspected it was related to the vaccines and it is now being proven by medical studies.

"My granddad smoked cigarettes. He died at 95. Hit by a truck."

intermerda··on Federal judge lifts administration halt of offshore wind farm in New England
> Obama's love of drones and his ordering extra-judicial execution of US citizens, their destruction of Syria and Libya and Iraq, etc.

Good thing that you prefaced with that you're not an American and you try not to wade into it too much. Your have a good excuse for ignorance of drone strikes and are a great example of how manufactured consent works. "Obama" + "drones" eventually leads to "both sides" enlightened centrism without understanding policy nuances. Just one such example - https://www.jstor.org/stable/23526906?seq=8.

> It's not unanswerable, but it is impossible to have a reasoned discussion about it even with otherwise reasonable people, sadly.

You're right about that one.

intermerda··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
It’s racists all the way to your core. You just don’t want to acknowledge it explicitly.
intermerda··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
Yeah the guy who referred to African countries as "shithole" while wondering why the US can't import more immigrants from Norway puts insurmountable barriers to a program whose beneficiaries are overwhelmingly non-white people and that has nothing to do with race or skin color. Smartest HN chatter.

You racists really want all the "benefits" of racism without actually accepting the label. Why is that?

intermerda··on Kernel: Introduce Multikernel Architecture Support
Huh I did not know that. I’m usually on careful about not using well-known nicknames unless the person goes by them.
intermerda··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
> Don’t play the race card, you sound emotional saying that.

It's not a "card", it's reality. And you make it sound like there is something wrong with being emotional.

It's neither politics nor getting back to the law's original intent. It is red meat for wolves like you and others in this thread.

intermerda··on Trump to impose $100k fee for H-1B worker visas, White House says
You perfectly exemplify the right-wing hypocrisy and cognitive dissonance by saying "it has nothing to do with skin color" followed by a quote by a people who did not consider black people to be people.
intermerda··on The H-1B Visa Program and Its Impact on the U.S. Economy
> A democrat should've been there so we flip a coin and decide the gender of your kid.

Nice strawman.

> The democrats went too far left which is why they lost.

The democrats lost because they underestimated the stupidity and overestimated the decency of the American public. They are so bad at politics that they couldn't even prevent half the country to stop supporting a pedophile - you included.

intermerda··on Kernel: Introduce Multikernel Architecture Support
Tim Roscoe gave an interesting Keynote at OSDI '21 titled "It's Time for Operating Systems to Rediscover Hardware" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36myc8wQhLo. He was involved with the Barrelfish project.

The US has had its mask off since 2016-17. The tech industry somewhat more recently.
